taxes to be assessed upon their corporate
property under the authority of Congress,
or of the city or county of Washington :
Provided, That the value of all property
so exempt shall not exceed two hundred
thousand dollars.
Sec. 2. Andhe it further enacted, That the

jority of the members 'present, to adopt

regulating the government of said corpo
ration, prescribing the number, character,
and duties of their officers, and the man
ner ot their election, denning the terms on
which persons may become, or cease to be,
members of said corporation, and provi
ding iu all things for the holding and dis
posal and conveyance of its real and per
sonal estate, and for the management of
said congregation, which by-laws may be
amended or repealed from time to time,
under such regulations as said congrega
tion may adopt : Provided, That no by
laws shall be adopted or remain in force
inconsistent with the government aud
laws of the United Stales, or with the con
stitution and authority of the Presbyterian
church in the United States of America.
Sec. 4. And Le it further enacted. That
Congress reserves the right to alter, amend,
or abolish this charter at pleasure.

brine in which meat had been packed,

a farmer's yard.
A correspondent objects to the
policy of having men work on the
farm 13 or 14 hours daily- He
thinks 10 or 11 hours long enough,
and that if a man does not do a day's
work in that time, he will not in a
longer time.

The remedy is only for the bovine
race. There is another kind of the
" black tongue " disease in Virginia
that no amount of whitewashing will

ful for the county commissioners of the
eountv of Lorain and State of Ohio to
build a bridge across the Black river near
the village of Black River, in said county,
at the point where the county road leading
east from said village crosses said stream :
Provided. That there shall be placed in
said bridge a draw of not less than one
hundred and forty feet in width, with a
centre abutment not to exceed twenty-five
feet wide and ten feet above the water
line, leaving a passage on each side of the
abutment o? not less than fifty-seven feet
in width, aud so constructed as not to im
pede the navigation of said river, and al
low the easy passage ot" vessels through
said bridge.
Skc. 2. And le it further enacted. That
tile right to alter or amend this act, so as
to prevent or remove all material ob
structions to the navigation of said river

George II. Calvert. R. C. Weightman,
James C. McGuire, Zeph English, George
II. Calvert, Jr.. and Charles B. Calvert,
their associates, successors, and assigns,
are hereby created a body corporate and
politic by the name of the National Hotel
Company, in the city of Washington, in
the District of Columbia, and by that
name they are made capable of taking
hold, managing, improving, purchasing,
leasing, for the sole purpose of erecting
and maintaining a hotel as aforesaid, real
and personal estate within said city of
"Washington: not exceeding five hundred
thousand dollars in value : said corpora
tion to have a common seal, and the same
may break; alter, and renew at pleasure
may prosecute and defend suits before all
proper courts and tribunal ; may make
and ordain by-laws for the government of
said corporation, and may nave and en.
joy all of those privileges and be subject
to all of the liabilities which corporations
for the holding, management, and improve
mentof real estate in the city of Wash
ington, in the United States, usually enjoy
or are made subject to.
Sec '3. And be it further enacted, I That
the capital stock ot the said company shall
not be less than two hundred aud seventy
thousand dollars, be divided into shares of

deemed personal estate, and he transfer
able on the books oT the said corporation.
Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That
the officers of the paid corporation shall
consist of a president and treasurer, with
aboard of directors, of whom the presi
dent and treasurer may be members, but
the number of the directors may be fixed
by the shareholders in the by-laws of the
corporation. The president shall preside at
the meetings of the corporation, sign certifi
cates of the stock issued to stockholders,
and shall have general over-sight over the
business and affairs of the corporation ;
the treasurer shall safely keep and dis
burse all of the moneys of the corporation
under the direction of the board of direc
tors ; the directors shall manage and con
trol the property of the corporation, and
make contracts in relation thereto ; the
treasurer, or other officer appointed by the
by-laws, shall keep the records ot the
transactions of the corporation, and shall
countersign the certificates of stock is
sued to the stockholders.
Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, That
all the officers of the said corporation shall
hold their offices for one year, and until
their successors are elected and qualified
to act, unless they shall be sooner re
moved by the directors. The first meet
ing of ihe corporation may be called by
any person named herein by giving pre
vious notice of not less than live days, to
all the persons herein named, of the time
and place of such meeting. The annual
meetings hereafter shall be called by the
treasurer or other officer designated by
the board, and be held in the city of
Washington, at the National Ho! el build
ing, ou'the first Wednesday in January in
each vear. notice of which shall be sent to
the post office address of each stockholder
for ten days before the time for the holding
of such "meeting ; and special meetings
of the corporation may be called in the
manner and time prescribed by the stock
holders. Sec 5. And le it further enacted, That
each stockholder shall be individually
liable for the debts of the corporation to

nance; out of which to cast the statues of
the principal figures surmounting and to
