NOT ALL IN
It isn't all in bringing up,
L.et folks say what they will;
You sliver-wash a pewter cup
O It will be pewter still.
E'en be of old, wise Solomon,
"Who said, " train up a child,"
If I mistake not, raised a son,
Gay, rattle-brained and wild-
A man of mark, who fafn would pass
For lord of sea and" land,
May have the training of an ass,
And bring him up full grand;
May give him all the wealth of lore-
Of college and of school,
Yet after all make him no mere-
Than just a decent fool.
Another, raised by penury '
Upon her bitter bread,
"Whose road to knowledge i3 like that
The good for heaven must tread,
Has got a pparl; of Nature's light,.
He'll fan it to a flame,
Till in its 7nrnrr.g letters bright
The world may read his name-
If it were ail in bringing up,
la counsel and restraint,
Some rascals had been honest men
I'd been myself a saint.
Oh! 'tisa't all in bringing up,
Let folks say what they will;
Neglect may dim a silver cup
It will be silver still.
