preach at St Paul's Episcopal Church in
this city this evening, and on to-morrow
morning at the usual hours of service.

A new mill is being erected on the
corner above the brick paper mill in this
-city. It will be called Barry's Erdiange,
we understand.
A blast of powder was put into the
rocks above the Canemali saw mill, last
Saturday. The hole drilled for the blast
was 23 feet deep by 2 inches in diameter.
A vast pile of rocks were removed to
-make room for the O-C, 11. R. Co.'s cars.
All Life Insurance Co.'s should make
provisions in their policies not to pay in
cases of suicide. Life Insurance, without
this provision, would be an inducement to
" some men to dispose of themselves.
m
train of immigrants from Colorado,
.passed through this city on the 25th.
They were eleven days at Boise, and have
made a remarkably quick trip. Their
Mock looks well. The same day a train
headed for Missouri, passed our office door.
Uessrs. Smith, Walker & Fuller, blind
musicians, paid this city a visit on Thurs-'
day, and gave our citizens two of the best
vocal and instrumental entertainments
ever given in the place. We recommend
0 them to the press and the public every
where.
An exhibition consisting of tableaux,
tc, will be given in this city on Tuesday
and Wednesday evenings next, Sept. 8th
and 9th, under supervision of the ladies of
Stj Paul's Episcopal Church, the proceeds
of which are to be devoted toward the pur
chase ot an organ for the CLurch. Ad
mission 50 cents. Children half price.
The place of the exhibition will be made
known by posters on Monday.
Messrs. Lewis &, Wolgamot of Oregon
City, can nosv supply 30 to 40 plows, on
demand- They have commenced a large
lot, and when these are finished no more
need be imported. The Pfiel Plow, and
the Web-foot, are the finest patterns made.
They expect to have agents for the sale of
these plows in every town in Oregon.
Rev. P. S. Knight, Pastor of the Con
gregational Church at Salem, and whose
ministrations have been so successful and
acceptable in this place, preached in his
old pulpit on the 30th, morning and eve
ning. His health has greatly improved
this year, consequent upon greater facility
for, and practice of, out-door exercises.
He came and returned on horseback.

Ever since we established in busing
at this place our private office has been a
sort of hall for the exhibition of choice
specimens of the agricultural and mineral
productions of Clackamas county. We
hare grain and the grasses from five to
eight feet high, green corn, vegetables,
etc., besides silver and gold quartz speci
mens, copper, iron, coal, limestone, etc.
This collection is often materially increased
by the addition of choice varieties of fruit
-g-but these do cot keep. The limb upon
which a cluster of fine apples grew in the
orchard of Mr. Wm. Holmes, sti'i hangs
0 over the doorway, but the fruit has disap
peared. Our devil says he can account
for the disappearance. On Tuesday Mr.
Bartlett left with us a basket full of ele
gant Bartlett rears; and a dozen of the
celebrated Crawford Peaches. These will
not keep ; it is not expected that they will:
but they show, while here, what our county
is capable of producing. These peaches
weigh four pounds (less 2J buncos,) three
of the largest weighed one pound.
bince the above was placed in type,
Mr. D. D. Thonipkins has left with us'one
dozen peaches weighing 6 pounds. Any
one who wishes to know whether peaches
mature here now can have aa affirmative

, AVm-R- Hill, better known as Euck
Ain till," came up to Oregon City on the
28th, after having served out a sentence
in the jail of Multnomah county, not hav
ing funds enough to liquidate the fine. Hia
mind was in a terrible state. He sought
our office, and desired us to say thathe
was not so bad a man as the world had
been educated to believe him to be. lie
said that poison whisky had ruined him ;
that all he had in the world was lost ; that
he did not wish to live any longer; that
1 ortland was such a bad fdace that it had
ruined his health, and he would go un to
Eugene City whero he could dhj in
j ree. When Rill told us all these things
I he seemed perfectly sober, and his manner
I xcited our sympathy wo bade him

I efforts to reform. On Sunday evening as
I we were passing the city jail a crowd at
I traded our attention. It soon became
I known that Bill was inside, choking to
I death 1 The keys were procured, and
deputy Sheriff Collard opened the doors
tae prison to reveal a horrid sight.
There lay Bill, his bead a mass of clotted

next day Sheriff Myers took him to Tort

A Smokt "Weather Item. Several of
our oldest inhabitants aver that they have
never seen in this country, such dense
smoke as now prevails. They are, how
ever, slightly in error, , as the summer of
1S.37 was an example of smoke, dense and
long continued, beside which the present
pales into comparative insignificance. We
remember very well that in that , summer,
says the Oregonian, the atmosphere was so
thoroughly loaded with smoke from vast
ui C3 m tm; vAasi ana Cascade ranges of
mountains as to create a sort of distemper
among the people throughout almost the
entire valley. The disease resulted from
inflammation of the respiratory organs,
superinduced by inhalations of smoke, and
somewhat resembled influenza. The per
sons affected were troubled with labored
breathing, slight cough and mucous ex
pectoration. We have heard some rather
large stories told about the effects of the
smoke that season. One person z Yam
hill averred that he actually had a bad
toothache cured by breathing the creosote
floating about in the air. Another de
clared that his throat became so tanned
like buckskin that he has never been able
since to distinguish by taste betveen
whisky and spring water. It is ni cer
tain, however, that he has tried the latter
within the last twenty years, and there is
a bare possibility that he is mistaken as to
the present intelligent sensibility of bis
swallow. These are only specimens of
the serio-comic talk then and afterward
common, when the smoky term was under
discussion. We cannot conscientiously
vouch for the truth of either story, but
they will serve to illustrate the deep im
pression made upon the people's minds by
. . ..... i i i
the almost tiueiv uanuiess wnicn prevaueu.
Since 1SG7 there has certainly been noth
ing to equal the present smoky term. Itie
forests on botu banks oi tne river ueiuw.
and on the Coast range both north and
south of the Columbia, are on fire, the con
flagration being furious and wide-spread,
and we may therefore look for the smoke
to become still more dense, and it may
possibly become as troublesome as in 1S57.
The have been ov?r the lines of
both the east and west side Companies
this week, influential men from all parts
of the valley. And, so far as the real
work of the Gaston Company is concerned,
it is nothing to compare with what has
been done on the East side, as we are
assured by men who were over both
lines. Then- is not two consecutive
miles of grade near ready for ties on the
West side ; on the East side about four
teen miles are ready for ties ; and this, too.
without skipping over bad places, as it has
been charged was done. All the East Side
Companv ask. is that their work may be
compared with that of West side.
The Unionist says that the Clackamas
Paper Mills could have been running for
the past three months only that the Com
pany was compelled to send to New York
for a piece of machinery, the value of
which was about twenty-five dollars. It
was essential, and the mill was unable to
run without it." This is news to us, and
will undoubtedly be to the proprietors
of the mill. Guess you're mistaken about
that, Brother Huntington.

OF CALIFORNIA,
NERVOUS AFFECTIONS;
The shapes of the clouds ahdthe
trees do not differ more widely than th
forms of nervous disease.. Sometimes both
the mind and body are affected, sometimes
the body only, and often the complaint is
confined to a single member. In one class
of cases the motive nerves alone are disor
dered, as in St. Titus' Dance in another
class the nerves of sensation only are attack
ed, as in neuralgia, tic douloureaux, tooth
ache, earache, etc. Pain is, in fact, the im
mediate consequence of a disturbed condi
tion of the nervous system ) for only thro'
the delicate fibers of which it is composed
can pain be experienced. Tremors hysteria
and most ot the unpleasant feelings usually
included under the head of nervousness,
arise from, the weakness of these sensitive
threads which pervade every part of the an
imal structure, and have their source in the
focntain head cf all senstion, the brain.
The tonic action of Hosteller's Bitters is of
vast service in cases of this kind. Nervous
headache, ordinary faceaclie, neuralgic pain
and everj variety of spasmodic torture, are
quickly alleviated by the use of the prepa
ration which at once braces and tran'qiiilizes
the nerves. Persons of a lymphatic temper
ament and feeble organization, are especial
Jy subject to these complaints, and should
take the Bitters daily as au invigorant. La
dies will derive great benefit from them in
all the peculiar mental and physical disturb
ances to which, as a sex, they are subject.
AsafcEtida, valerain, and the other nervines,
usually prescribed for these affections, at
best merely alleviate them for the time being
but the Bitters are a permanent invigorant,
and their value as a remedy for every phase
of nervousness is beyond all estimate.
CoXSTITCTIONAL WEAKNESS
It is a great thing t hare a sound and
vigorous constitution. There is nothing
that money can buy, comparable in value to
this best gift of nature. The difference be
tween the individual who has it, and the un
fortunate who has it not, is just the difference
between f he man who goes into battle cloth
ed in defensive armor, and one who has
nothing to oppose the sword and bullet but
his naked breast. " The pestilence that
walketh in darkness, the sickness that des
troyed a't noonday," while it lays low the
man of feeble stamina, i3 often conquered
by the native strength of what is called an
" iron constitution."
Heaven, however, has not endowed even a
moiety of mankind with this inestimable
blessing", and therefore it behooves thjse
who have it not to resort to those most effi
cient means of constitutional invigoration
which science can supply. ..There is good
warrant for asserting tnat Ilostetter's Bit
ters are admirably adapted to promote this
end. Other tonics have their drawbacks.
The concentrated extract of pcisonous veg
etable substances, which within the last few
years haTe been introduced into the practice
of medicine as invigorants", are all extremely
dangerous. Trussic acid and strychnine,
though often given as strengthening medi
cines, are not safe even in the diminutive
doses ; and quinine disastrously effects the
nerves and the bones. But in Ilostetter's
Bitters there is positively nothing that is not
healthful and wholesome. They contain no
ingredient which by any process could be
converted into an active poison, and yet as
a constitutional stimulant are infinitely pref
erable to any of the sulphates and aaetates
which have been recently added to the ma
teria medico..
The Government Countersign.
The counterfeiting of Ilostetter's Stomach
Bitters is now a somewhat mere serious as
well as difficult business than it was a few
years ago, each bottle of tte genuine article
being authenticated by the official endorse
ment ot thetLnitcd fetates Kevenue Depart
ment in the form of a stamp engraved on
steel, to counterfeit which is a felony. See,
therefore, that this Government Counter
sign, as well as the engraved label and note
of hand of the proprietors, is attached to
the battle. The label is embellished with a
superb representation of St. George on horse
back, in the act of spearing the Dragon, and
underneath is a shield or escutcheon, bear
ing a warning inscription, which countar
feiters are advised to read before they en
counter the penalty which it sets forth. Be
low this again is Hostetter &. Smith's note
of hand, the signature to which it would be
rather a serious business to forge. If the
public will look to these verifications of the
genuineness of the article before they
purchase! . they caunot be deceived.
The proprietary label arid Government
stamp are both executed on steel in the
most elaborate style of bank-note engraving
and are probably the most expensive speci
men of graphic art ever attached to any
medical preparation!
