q1 me 13 rushing in his chariot;
Rapidly his wheel3 go round;
OT hough they leave no dust behind them,
Though they leave no rumbling sound;
Silently thjjy bear us onward
Soon our journey will be o'er
Soon the friends with whom we mingle
AVe shall see and hear no more;
Soon our feet shall press the meadows
Of the vast eternal shore.
Flying months and years remind ua
Of the world we'rPpassing to:
Let u3 leave good deeds behind us,
In the world we're passing through,
"Which shall be the seeds of kindness
"Watered by celestial dew,
And shall bear good fruits for others,
0 Fruits of joy and peace and love,
Years long after we are singing
In the immortal land above.
Men arc born, and men are dying:
Thousands come not one can stay;
Time is swift, his wheels are flying,
Never ceasing, night nor day,
For the laughter, nor the crying
O Of the stricken or the gay;
Gushing down the God-defying,
They who lgh at Death's delay
And from sorrow, sin and sighing,
Bearing gentle souls away.
Flans and schemes of men and nations,
Hearts and homes and homestead tree,
Granite walls and Art's creations,
All the eye delights to see,
q All the ear delights in hearing,
Crumble, tumble, fall and fade;
Oh ! we need a world more cheering,
Free from graves and cypress shade;
Thanks to God! that world we're nearing,
In eternal sapphires laid.
Maine promises to give Grant and
Colfax 20,000 majority or more.
The Democratic papers object
to General Grant because he used to
chop wood for bis living. In fact
they don't like wood choppers, any
how. They have not yet forgotten
that the Illinois rail-splitter split up
the Democratic party in 1860 so
efTectually that they have never yet
been able to pick up all the chips.
New York has had Presidential
candidates at five of thg elections
during the past GO years, and in only
j, one instance has the candidate been
elected Mr. Van Buren, in 183G.
De Witt Clinton had 80 electoral
votes in 1813, Ilufus King 34 in 1817,
Tan Buren GO in 1841, and none in
(! 849.
The printers of Chicago have
organized a Colfax Club, with affili
ated societies in every town in the
country in which half a dozen printers
can be found. Stand by your crafts
jnan, says the Sacramento Record,
he is the type of a patriot, and justi
j&s our support. Stick to him, and
when presiding over the Senate he
w ill so rule as to chase our enemies
from the land. We have a good
imjiression of his devotion to coun
try, no man having given a clearer
proof of faithfulness. With Grant,
he wii? lead the great column of the
Union boys to victory, aud press tho
tncmyCfrom power.
The adoption of the repudiation
platform by the Democratic CoriTens
tion, says the N. Y. Post, was im
mediately followed by a fall in Gov
ernment bonds of about one percent.
Every holder of the National debt
had his property reduced in value;
lo$ing, in fact, two months' interest
on hi money by this one rash vote
of three hundred irresponsible poli
ticians. The total immediate loss in
value was nearly twenty million of
dollars. If the mere threat of a dis
united and powerless faction costs
the country so much, how much
would the triumph of such a party
cost 1 Nor is there any compensa
ting advantage to any person what
ever ; the loss of National credit ben
efits no one, but is pure loss to the
bondholder, the Nation, and the
world.
Weohave never had the wevil

advice may be of service to our read

Farmer :
Fumigate Your Guaineiues. As
there has been more or less wevil in
various parts of the State at different
times for the last two years, and as
there has been considerable loss on
this account, we would suggest to
warehousemen and grain growers the
0 greafimportance of thorough cleans
ing and fumigation of all their places
of deposit for grain, now that they
are empty or nearly so, and thus
prepare them foRDa greater safety he
