Oregon City hare any sort of roads upon
which to take a drive in the afternoon, be
fore breakfast, or at dusk, but having twice
accepted of invitations from friends within
the past len da"s to ride over the hills
ta.nt of the city, we learn that in point of
flct our county can boa3t of its drives.
The first ride wa3 with Mr. W. B. Partlow.
wbo has for seventeen years kept livery
stable on Main street, and is now about to
gCtUe down on a farm, just as any man
ought to do, if he wants to be independent
O and live to a good old age. We rolled
, o'at through a shady grove an tne way ior
a few miles south easterly, saw several
handsome farms, with neat tasty residences,
barns amP other buildings, reminding us
of homes in the land beyond the Missis
sippi. There ws real pleasure in the trip.
Again, we went northerly ; and ve shall
o again and again, as often as we can af
ford it. . T .
There are hundreds of people living
in Portland who never visited this city
they never get beyond the sound of drays
and hacks, milk carts, and bakers wagons.
Let them come up here and treat their
ears to the sound of our rushing waters,
tfce spindles and looms in our manufac
tories, the music of our forest birds, and
breathe the breath of fresh air. It will do
them good. Passage is cheap, and trans
portation often. Fare 23 cents, 50 cents,

0 Saturday last the harvest com
menced in Clackamas county. We had
the pleasure that evening of visiting a re
gion five miles east of this city, where we
"procured samplesof the kind of productions
the soil of our hills turns out. We have
0 two samples of grain from adjoining fields,
on the farm oT Mr. E, W. SwafTord, one of
oats and one of wheat. The oats straw
measures five fret four inches to the grain,
the head being seven inches more, filled
heavily. The wheat stands eighteen steins
fro iff one tuft, and averages three feet
tlree inches, with fyiir inches and a feJtlf of
head, containing about the finest grain the
vorld ever saw. These are only average
specimens of the grain of this county. The
crop will turn out largely, and without a
blemish.
Success has finally crowned the efforts
"of Capt. Tease to supply this city with
water for the purpose 6f extinguishing
fires. The reservoir has been enlarged,

substantial cast fron put down in place of
them ; and whrti water is not sufficiently
supplied by the stream on the bluff, it is
forced through tlie mains to tne reservoir

from the river, by the pumps in use at the
woolen factory. We believe that there
are none now so ungeuerons as not to
'congratulate' Capt. Pease, and feel thank
ful that ve have tone protection at lat

not a building within range of The hy
drants on Main street. that is not now com
paratively safe to what it ever was before.
Wo do not think that any bitter stream is
thrown on account of fhe cast iron mains,
but there is les. leakage, and the work is
'durable.

Sunday last was the warmest day of
he season. The very air seemed stifled,

were cool breezes in this vicinity along

plucked in the garden of our i'riend and

An addition to the McLaughlin House
in this city, is soon to be constructed, 24
by 60 feet in size, two stories, and divided
off in such manner as to leave a dining
room 24 by 49 feet, andgive 14 additional
rooms for sleeping apartments. We are
glad to know that tho hotel business of
the city is increasing so fast, as it is a
pretty fair indication ef tire wrofpfrity of

have seen in Oregon.
Mr. I. Selling wishes to have it under
stood among his late patrons and by the
public in geueral that he has a full assort

We hear of a disease, in most casc3
fatal, which has attacked the young stock
of this county. Calves are taken with it
by neighborhoods, a hard bunch grows in
the throat, and death ensues. What is it?

A house may be cleared of ants by
laying a few lumps of moist crushed sugar
ou the pantry shelves. When they get
upon the sugar so black that the bait can
not be seen burn ants and all. Once or
twice trial will clean them out effectually.

Mr. Walgamot, well known among the
farmers of Oregon, returned last week
after our paper had gone to press, with his
bride from California. They were wel
comed at the Cliff House, and serenaded
that evening by the Oregon City Crass
Band, in several of the liveliest airs of the
season.

Mr. Bartlett, who must be a relative
of the Bartlett Tear, he is so good, has
left upon our table 12 plums which
weighed iwo pounds. These are of the
Peach, or Orleans variety, and although
fruit of this description is scarce this year,
it bears evidence that what did grow,grew
heavy.

sation of the occasion was when Miss Jose
Devore, the accomplished daughter of the
Rev. J. F. Devore, Presiding Elder of this

table, and stepping near the front of the
platform, proceeded to " ppeak like a
statesman.7' She is the first voung ladv
who has completed theyonng gentlemen s
course in any university on the Pacific
Coast, and taken the degree of A. B.

has accumulated in the bottom of a well,
mix 20 or 33 pounds of lime in a bucket
of water, apd pour little by little on the
stones forming the edge of the well, then
20 or 25 pounds of, quick, lime are thrown
into the water and form vapors which im
mediately ascend. After 24 hours a. can
dle will burn clearly inside the well, which
indicates the dissipation of 'the noxious

In announcing several new editions, in
a style of improved elegance, and conve
nience, of the Works of Washington Irving,
the publishers would take the opportunity
of acknowledging ' the go5d reception
which his efforts in the presentation of
these favorite Writings bate heretofore re
ceived. In the several forms in which the
various productions of the author of the
Sketch-Book' have been given .to the
public,- it' is estimated thatthe sale has
reached no less than fifty thousand of the
series, or more than a million volumes.
Nor is the demand yet abated. On the
contrary, new exertions of enterprise are
required to meet the desires of a new gen
eration of readers, and keep pace with the
progress of taste arid refinement in tb
typographic and other mechanic arts of
the publisher's calling.
The motive of this perennial popularity
is not ' far to seek. . It is to be read on
every page of the delightful volumes in
which "Geoffrey Crayon'' infused the
uappy inspiration oi nis genius in ins ae
votion to, themes which will always be. re
garded by successive generations of, rea
ders with no ordinary emotions of interest.
