act in harmony with respect to conflicting
interests. People are already leaving Os

early days of this city a variety of interests
would have centered here, only for mis
understandings, and stubbornness.
The boiler for Capt. Buughman's new
steamer Success was completed at the Ore
gon Iron Works on Saturday last at 2
clock p. m.. and within six hours from
that time was lauded at Caneinah, all safe.
The Portland Dray and Hack Company
delivered it by loading it upon two pairs
of trucks, drawn by six horses, to a barge
in Portland, which was then towed to this
city by the Wtnat. Here the learns were
driven off. and carried the boiler over the
portage to Citnernah,U(iloaded and returned
that night to their stables. The boiler
wois something over six tons, and is a
fine specimen of w ork. The Success will
soon move.
L ist Thursday evening we visited the
Qorks of the Oregon Central R. R. Co., at
East Portland. They are all that has been
said of them, and a little more. The car
shop, 110 by 37 feet, was raised on that
day. We might detail to our readers
many things vhie? the Company propose
l tng. within a short time, but it is not at
all necessary. We may simply sum tip
the whole by saying that the contractors
have so far fulfilled every agreement on
their part, and are at work pushing the
enterprise along. The road will be com
pleted and turned over to the Company
within the time specified. To all state
ments that work is suspended we can give
the fiat contradiction. The West Side
Company are just as energetically at work
as they have been, all along, in opposing
this side.
Common Coi-it.. On Paturda v evening,
1 lib, the Common Council was called
to order by Mayor Barclay in the chair.
Present Messrs. Thompson, Apperson,
Broughton, Caldwell, Chase and P ease.
The committee to whom the assessment
roll had been referred reported, and the
roll was duly received.
On motion the Recorder was instructed
:to give notice that the assessment roll
would remain open for inspection at his
office until July 20ih. 1SGS, after which
iime it will be placed in the hands of the
collector.
The committee to whom were referred
"the ordinance to tax dogs asked further
tune to report, which was granted.
A petition from Messrs. MeXamara ask
ing that their road tax be remitted for
labor performed on the street adjacent to
property of petitioners, was rejected.
The finance committee reported the fol
lowing bills correct, and warrants were
lravni for the amounts of each J. Bow
wan, $ts ;C. C.reenman. $2 50 : J. M. Ba
con. $3 ; J. W. Ryan, $2 50; 15. Killen, $10.
A petition from Abel Etidy praying that
his city schocil and road tax be remitted,

to the improvement of Main street were
made, and the order was accepted.
One hundred dollars was appropriated
for

street, and $250 for the improvement of

vicinity of the barrel factory of L. Zigler
fc Son.
On motion, tbo Council adjourned.
Mr. Moses Miller, of Union precint, a
few days ago presented us with one head
of lettuce which filled a common apple
box. This was only a sample of the pro
ductions of his garden.
The amount of wool received at the
factory in this city, so far, the present sea
son, is very much in excess of the receipts
of the preceding years, and is of better
quality generally, while the price has
been below the average of former years.
The ruling figures are about 18 cents per
pound.
Capt. Miller, of the Echo, returned
from the ratification at Salem with his
steamer all O. K. But few copperheads
turned out it seems by an item in the
Record that the company have most of
their tickets on hand yet. The Echo car
ried about 70, one half of whom were Re
publicans, by actual count.
Tfae sash and door factory of Mr. John
P. Walter, in Portland, was destroyed by
fire, on the 10th. It was a very important
and valuable establishment, and its loss
will be felt by Portland. The loss is esti
mated at from $35,000 to $40,000, and
falls heavily upon Mr. Walker, as there is
no insurance whatever. The fire was ter
rific, and about the hottest Me ever wit

Jbnns, ex-Sheriff, will be en route to the
East with his family. We trust that their
vfcit may be a pleasant one, and that we
rrray have the p leasure of welcoming them
'ba;k within a reasonable time. Mr. Burns
goes as one of the Representatives to the
' Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows for the U.
S.. a seat fully as honorable, and as pro
ductive of good, as any in the Congress of
i the nation.
The third game of the match between
Clackamas Base Ball Club of this city, and
the Washingtona of Vancouver, has not
yet been played. On Saturday last the
two other clubs of this city met their con
testants at Portland, and came out victori
ous. The Tumwaters beat the Young
Pioneers 39 runs, leaving one game to play
to decide the match. The Young Grants
beat the Actives 33, and also leave one
game standing, to decide the contest be
tween them.
The death of Mr. John Coburn, at Ca
neinah on Wednesday last, was very sud
den and unexpected. He was in his usual
good health on Sunday, and retired appa
rently well that evening. In the night he
was taken with convulsive fits, and strug
gled with them almost uninterruptedly un
til his death. Mrs. Coburn was alone with
him when he was first taken, and it is un
accountable how she, of such a frail consti
tution, attended him. All attention was un
able to restore him, hence; his death is
mourned. He was an excellent man, and
his death leaves a vacancy in the community-.

Chauncey Ball has purchased the in
terest of his partners in the wagon business
at Portland, and increased his facilities.
Mr. R. E. Chalfield is in want of flax
seed. Fanners will do well to consult him
before selling.
Koshland Bros, will pay the highest
cash price for wool, furs, and hides. They
have a line stock of merchandise-.
Messrs. Walter Bros, have the best lot
of.new carpeting ever imported to Oregon.
Their store is headquarters in that line.
Mr. J. A. MacDonald, late of the post
office at Oswego, has opened business in
Portland, at the well-known Pony Saloon.
Mr. J. F. Miller & Co. have purchased
the McLaughlin House, in this city. They
will spare no pains to render guests com
fortable. Dr. Watkins enjoys a very enviable'
reputation as a physician and surgeon
His office is on Front street, over Hodge
& Calef's drug store.
The proprietor of the New Columbian
at Portland, has a new coach, and the
press of the metropolis were treated in
consequence.
The old established Emigrant Stove
and Tin Store of Portland, is doing a hand
some business, we are proud to learn.
Messrs. Robinson fc Lake have earned a
reputation which will serve them in future.
When you go to Portland, if you hava
a horse, put it up at the stable of Godard
it Lake. They are responsible parties,
and will perform their contracts. If you
wish to hire a turn-out, by all means give

Our old friend F. Opitz, of the Oregon
Bakery, Portland, has decided that no
more crackers must come to Oregon from
San Francisco. He will attend to all
branches of the trade, but to the cracker
part in particular. See advertisement.
Kohn fc Fishel have not sold out their
entire stock ! They never will, as they re
ceive new invoices by every steamer, of
the best grades of goods in the markets.
Their old stand on Front street is reliably
understood.
-Mr. Stone, who was so unfortunate as
to lose an arm in the factory at this city in
I860, we are glad to see has established a
business in Ilighfield's block, Main street
Persons in want of groceries, etc., are in
vited to give him a call.
Mr. Thomas Barry, some years ago
proprietor of the Brilliant, has taken a
position at the Fashion, in this city. The
saloon has been thoroughly renovated.and
is now about equal to a new place. The
papering was done by Mr. Geo. Lark.

Beau Sirs, 1 ought to have acknowledged
long ago the box of Pain Killer you had the

of lives were saved, under God, by it. The
