The cele bration at Portland called an immense crowd of people together there. Between that, and the match game of base ball at Vancouver, our city was nearly depopula ted. Corn has heretofore been considered uncertain in Oregon at least some parts of the State, but we were pleased to see, c . . , . . , .. ... un oaiiiuiay iasi, many line looking patches of corn growing iu this country, and we understand that there is much more of it that may be seen. Our fellow townsmen Win. 1J. Partlow has planted a farm this year, and corn was included in the list of productions which he is cultivat ing. Last year, ia the garden of Mr. Dlanchaid, at Canemih, we saw as fine corn, ripened, as we have ever seen ea?t Of the Mississippi. We do not think that corn could be found to do well in this valley uniformly, but it will par well to cultivate it in places. With the exception of a strip of land in the lower part of Cal ifornia, corn cannot ba produced in that State with any degree of certainty. We are informed Walla Walla Valley. W. T., is a good corn region. The crop there usually pays better than either wheat or barley. This year the farmers of Watia Walla Val ley are devoting a large share of their at tention to corn. We obseived by the Statesman, some time since, that Mr. Ire land. Assessor for the county, Lad return ed some 2000 acres assessed in corn, and that the Ggurcs would be materially in creased before he should complete his labors. Mr. John Myers sheriff elect of Clacka mas county, took charge of his new duties on Tuesday morning last. The first offi cial act of Mr. Myers was to open a shutter of the Court room, protrude his face to ward the street and cry ! Now most men might think that it was an ur usual tiling for a sheriff to cry ; but it is not about the last act performed by ex-sheriff Burns was to cry the adjournment of County Court, which was taken up by his suc cessor on the following day "This aud nothing mere." - The body of young Wallis, drowned in th Clackamas on the 2:3d. was recover ed on Saturday evening, and respectably buried on Sunday. Dr. Barclay summon ed a jury, and a Coroners inquest was held, which resulted in a verdict of acci dental drowning. Mr. Wallis wa3 a na tive of New Brunswick, and aged about ;0 years. The following rrentlemen sat as r . jurors: josepn i). iocey r oreman, n. Bacon, J. L. Barlow. Geo. A. Pease, Rob ert Gammill. ILichard Hawkins; Forbes Barclay coronlr.
