Kill that family. It was rather a rough
aspect for tire lady of the house, vrho was
in poor health at best, and being alone
bore the ttrrt bravely, bearing mildly
with the contempt and throatening3 of the
insane visitor until her lrttlo sen arrived,
who was quietly dispatched for assistance.
Mr. Randall, of the city seminary was
called, and soon prevailed upon the insane
man to quit the premises. He bad not
been made aware of the threats that this
singularly commissioned apostle had
used, hence let him go but as quick as
the true state of things was known search
Mas instituted for the crazy fellow, who
was no where to be found. Several years
ago this fellow was employed by Mr. J.
W. Lewis in this city, and he is known as
Horned George.
FRoimc- - On taking our seat in the Ed

Monday hist, the first duty devolving up
on us, Wiis to thank Mrs. Cassady, one of
of our excellent lady readers, for her
kind recollections ofQis on the Saturday
previous, having sent us a quantity of
the celebrated Prolific variety of straw
berries and the Cherry currant. They
were indeed iYo.'rfc. Many of these
strawberries, planted and plucked by Mrs.
Cawady's own hand, measured 11 inches
jn diameter; one, on the table before us,
measured oi iuches in circumference. The
tui a.ts were nearly as large as the ordi

,
such favors, and will strive to deserve
them, by giving our friends and patrons

THE XKAV MAP OF OREGON.
Speaking of Rappleye's new map of Or
egon, the Unionist says:
It is compiled from the latest and best au
thorities, and is the most accurate vet pub
lished. It is four feet by six in size, and
will be printed in colors in the finest style of
copper-plate engraving, on the best quality
of paper, and mounted on canvass and roll
ers. All who see a copy and desire an accu
rate map of this coast, will of course, sub
scribe. Gen. Geo. Crook says of it.
Portland, Okkc.oq, May 20th, 1S6S.
II. W. Rapplete DearSir: I takepleas
nre in stating that I regard your map of Or
egon as the most accinate ofany that I have
seen published, and in fact the only one that
gives anything like a correct ideaot Eastern
Oregon and its surroundings.
I am, sir, very respectfull v, vour obedient
servant, GEORGE" CROOK,
Bvt. Maj. Gon. U. S. A.
Hon. D. P. Thompson recommends it as
follows:
Oregon- City .Tunc l."th 1E6S.
Mr. II. AV. Kapplkye lear Sir : have
carefully examined your Map of Oregon, and
have no hesitancy in stating that I believe
it to be the most correct map that I have
seen ; particularly of the portion of Oregon
East of the Cascade Range. I bare been
engaged in Surveying in that region of
country for seven years, and believe that por
tion of" your map which embraces the coun
try from the Cascade Mountains East, lor
one hundred miles, to be entirely corr ect.

In Town. Mr. W. II. Anderson, one of
the contractors for the construction of the
O. C. R. R. has taken up his residence in
our city. As soon as the road progresses
above us far enough to make it inconve
nient to reside here he will change to Sa
lem. Mr. A. is one of those enterprising,
undaunted gentlemen, such as you can
pickup all over the west. He has an al
most unlimited knowledge of the business
in which ho is employed, and with such
men we feel that success is sure. How
any one can, cn .Kts.sat, suppose else
than that this enterprise is beyond a per
advenlure is more than we can compre
hend. Mr. Elliott has actually done more
for Oregon in the matter of enterprise, in
getting this road started, and pushing it
ahead, than we can ever pay him for. He
brought Mr. Brooks, Mr. Anderson, and
other gentlemen here, and the final result
of his efforts will bring us millions more
of money, and thousands of energetic
people. 1.)kownei. On Tuesday last a man nam
ed David Wallis los! his life in the Clack
amas, near the new paper-mill, while en
gaged in runningv saw-logs for the Port
land trade. He had just passed over a
rifile opposite the mill, where the logs
rolled considerably, and fell off, swimming
on ahead of the logs for some distance,
then striking out for shore. A boat
was sent after him. but he was an excel
lent swimmer, and no thoughts of his
drowning had been entertained, until
when within about a rod of the shore he
struck a counter current from the mill
race, and sank suddenly to rise no more.
He was a young man, and bore a good
name in this community. We believe he
had no relatives in this part of the country.
Bkaten Again. On last Saturday there
was another base ball match between the
Turn waters of Oregon City, and the Ath
letics of Portland, at the latter place, re
sulting in a victory for the Athletics. Our
boys say they will rig and go after them
again. Ve admire their pluck.
Forn Fmks. At a game of ba-p ball
played on the grounds of the Clackamas
club in this city on Tuesday evening last.
Mr. S. Bailey caught four fly-balls, and
only for the weather mhjht have captured
five more; being even on that score with
Mr. Geo. Sheppard of Canemah, who
caught nine at one playing last season, on
the same field.
Nakkow Rscai'K. On Tuesday last as
Mr. Wm. Holmes of this county was alight
ing from his horse in this city, his foot
caught in the stirrup, and being a spirited
animal would have seriously injured Mr.
Holmes but for the timely arrival of assis
tance which placed him beyond peril.
Srit.UNKn Axki.e. On Tuesday last as
Mr. II. L. Kelly was playing with the oth
er boys, at base ball, on the Clackamas
field, he met with a painful accident in
spraining his right ankle. The very bone
was heard to creak at the moment of the
accident, by persons near by.

who wish to attend from other places are
referred to the programme in another
column.

Chinese Festival. The Chinese la
borers on the Railroad enjoyed one of
their holidays on the grounds last Tues
day. Chickens, fire-cracker.5":, etc., suffer
ed some.

Dr. IIostetteh's Stomach Bit-
tehs. The operation of this palatable rem
edy upon the stomach, liver and excretory
organs is singularly soothing and conserva
tive. It regulates, recruits, and purities
them. Dyspepsia in all its forms yields to
its control and invigorating properties,- and
it is recommended to mothers, enfeebled by
the cares and duties of maternity, as the
safest and best remedy they can probablv
use. In all the crisis of female Hfb it will be
found eminently useful, aud elderly persous
will derive much more benefit from it than
from ordinary stimulants. Sold by the drug
gists and dealers everywhere.

JlN some, genial, and restorative ill its na
ture, enters into the composition of llOS
TETTKR'S STOMACH BITTERS. This
popular preparation contains no mineral of
any kind ; no deadly botanical element; no
tierv excitant : but is a combination ot tne
extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants,
with the purest end mildest ot iili tfiflusiye

The week stomach is rapidly invigorated,
and the appetite restored by this tonic, and
hence it works wonders in cases of Dyspepsia,
nnd in less confirmed forms of Indigestion.
Acting as a gentle and painless aprient, as
well as upon the liver, it also invariably re
lieves the Constipation superinduced by ir
regular action of the digestive and secretive
