Oregon we lore thee so glorious and grand,
A thy beauty stows forth on Pacific's strand
Though roung are thy people, old are thy
hifls, O
And the music is sweet of thy murmuring
rills.
Thy nvers flow proudly on, on, to the sea ;
Thy mountains are deckid with an evergreen
tree ;
Thy ra'leys are lorely, teeming with flowers
Made bright by Mays silrery showers.
On thy lakes scarce a ripple is seen
jave when sweet sephers disturb tho silrery
sheen
fTbr orchards are as fragranwhen blossom-
trig oat
As the lorely magnolia ; the pride of the
south.
The middle States of Mississippi may boast
Then to noble Columbia will be the next
toast ;
When people say Saratoga will do invalids

We will shout far and near, there is no place

Your formers are honest, they work with a
will
They've nothing to do with the last congres
sional bill
They have a home of their own, a little
haven on earth
Where they poscss peace and plenty, in
termingled with mirth.
Here the fields are as green and the skies
are as blue
As the ladies are pretty and the gentlemen
true;
The birds sing as sweetly uud the rose is as

As the fir tree is graceful that towers o'er

It is impossible to exaggerate the
advantage to the farmer of reading
yes, studying, all the agricultural
newspapers which they can obtain.
There are in America at least one
dozen publications of the kind, which,
if he can possibly afford it, the fanner
should subscribe for. No oce who
&as done so, and read them, will de
ny, that at the end of the year, he
!ias saved his money over and over
Again; afid yet how many farmers
there are who do not take one such
journal, to say nothing of a dozen!
Farming is, however, every day get
ling tfear that stage when reading
and a high, grade of intelligence will
no longer be a matter of opinion, but
a downright question between living
and starving.
Begin, in the first place, with your
-own State, and the agricultural pa
-per published especially for it, and
then, as pur means increase, go fur
ther out. Keep these papers togcth
crQmd refer to them often. It was
a hint from an agricultural paper
'that an Englishman once took to
raising peppermint by the acre and
distillingit ; ia a few years he was
worth forty thousand pounds.
We ask every vitelligent Farmer
if such is notothe case everywhere
he travels, where ofie way, the Far
mer's grounds, his " house,'' fences,
trees, in fact all under his control
shows whether he is a reading man
illlM VI via UUVJOi;u vt unn uuatLivoa,
his own profession or not. Neglect
ed and poorly tilled lands, orchards
filled with weeds, fences down, gates
nnd doors off hinges, and a dilapida
ted appearance is sure to mark the
man who never takes an agricultural
paper, who sneers at Book knowledge,
and yet boasts he has been a farmer
all his life. Yet the very nppearauce
of his farm and the place xvliere he
struggles to keep up, and the place
where his family slays, is the posi
tive proof that he is not an intelligent
farmer, for the neighbors all around
him with no better land, and no more
mean's at the same time of starting,
are well to dg and are prosperous far
mer?, and their farms, orchards, vine
yard, houses and barns all indicate
intelligence and thrift, they are read
ing, thinking, practical, )'rogressive
;ne7t,awhile the opponent of look far
viing, proves by his whole surround
ings, and his appearance and the look
of countenance an unsatisfied, and a
discouraged and unprosperous man,
there is but one remedy " Knoicledge
is Power" let men use it that will, it
is the high road to prosperty.

1VRITK HOME.
You who have left fond hearts at home,
(And who has not in this far land ?)
If you have wundcred here alone,
The only one from that loved band,
Oh, write to them, they're anxious now,
They so much fear the one that strayed
Has found no hand to smoothe his brow ;
Or in a stranger's grave is laid.
You who have crossed o'er bill and plain,
And suSered much to reach this land,
Or gladly crossed the bouuding main,
To tread in joy this golden strand,
Write home ; do not forget them there,
Because they're far away foni thee ;
They love thee still ; their nightly prayer
Is that thou may'st in safetj be.
Young man, perchance long years ago,
You wandered from a mother's love ;
Then write to her, nnd let her know
You think of her where'er you rove;
Her anxious heart is sick with fears.
And stala to ber is other joy ;
If thou wouldst dry thy mother's tears,
Write home, write to thy mother, boy,'
na3 disappointment chilled thy heart?
Misfortune met thee face to face ?
Has sorrow pierced thee with its dart?
And left thy hopes a shattered vase?
Though all the world may frown, write home;
Fresh hopes will spring from love again ;
From every word you write will come
A healing balm for all your pain,
Father, husband, you who hare left
The ares and joys of home behind ;
To those thy absence has bereft,
Thy sileuce scams at least uukind ;
In thy mad rush for wealth and fame,
Write home, before it is too late ;
Write home, 'twill keep more bright the
chain
That binds thee to a better fate.
Ye restless throng that crowd the street.
Ye dwellers in our favored land,
Who sudden fortunes hope to meet,
By grasping Nature's golden hand,
Write home ; oh, do not fail to write;
As sure returns the wandering dove,
Not pausing in its hocrcward flight,
Send home bright messages of love.
REPUBLIC-AX PLATFORM
ADOPTED BV TUG NATIONAL irNlOJf CONVENTION
AT CHICAGO.
He-solved, 1st. That we congratulate the
country on the assured success of the lle
constnyjlion Policy of Congress as evi
denced by the adoption in a majority of
States lately in rebellion, of Constitutions
securing equal, civil and political rights to
all, and we'regard itas the duty of the
government to sustain these Constitutions,
and prevent the people of such States,
from being remitted to a state of anarchy
or military rule.
2d. The guarantee by Congress of
equal suffrage to all loyal men in the
South, was demanded by every considera
tion of public safety, gratitudeand justice;
and must be maintained ; while the ques
tion of suffrage in all loyal States proper
ly belongs to the people of those States.
3d. We denounce all forms of repudi
ation as a natural crime, and national hon
or requires the payment of the public in
debtedness in the utmost good faith to our
creditors at home and abroad, not only
according to the letter, but spirit of the
laws under which it was contracted.
4th. It is due to the labor of the nation
that taxation should be equalized and re
duced as rapidly as the national faith will
permit.
5th The national debt, contracted as it
had been for preservation of the Union
for all time to come, should be extended
over a fair period, and it is our duty to
reduce the rate of interest thereon when
ever it can honestly be done.
(Jib. e That the best policy to diminish
our burden of debt is so to improve our
credit that capitalists will seek to lend
money at lower rates of interest than we
now pay and must continue to pay so long
as repudiation, partial or total, open or
covert, is threatened or suspected,
7th. The Government of the United
States should be administered with the
strictest economy. The corruptions which
have been so shamefully nursed and fos
tered by Andrew Johnson, call loudly for
radical reform.
8th. AVe profoundly deplore the un
timely and tragic death of Abraham Lin
coln, and regret the succession of Andrew
Johnson to the Presidential chair, who has
acted treacherously to the people who
elected him and the cause he was pledged
to support, who has usurped high legisla
tive and judicial functions, has refused to
execute the laws, has used his high office
to induce other officers to violate the laws,
has employed his Executive power to ren
der insecure tbe lives, property, peace and
liberty of citizens, has abused the pardon
ing power, has denounced the National
Legislature as unconstitutional, nas per
sistently and habitually resisted by every
means in his power, every attempt at the
reconstruction of the States lately in rebel
lion, has perverted public patronage into
an engine for wholesale corruption, has
justly been impeached for high crimes and
misdemeanors, and has been pronounced
guilty thereof by the votes ot 2a Senators.
9th. The doctrine of Great Britian and
other European powers mat, because a
man is once a subject he is always so,
must be resisted at every hazard by the
United States as a relic of feudal times not
authorized by the law of nations and at
war with our national honor and inde
pendence. Naturalized citizens are en
titled to be protected in all their rights of
citizenship as though they were native
born. No citizen of the United States or
naturalized must be liable to arrest or im
prisonment by any foreign power for acts
done or words spoken in this country and
if so arrested and imprisoned, it is the
duty of the Government to interfere in bis
behalf.
10th. Of all who were faithful in the
trials of the late war. there were none
more faithful for special honor than brave
soldiers and seamen who endured hard
ships of camp and cruize and imperiled
their lives in the service of their country.
The bounties and pensions appropriated
by law for these brave defenders of the
Union, are obligations never to be forgot
ten. The widows and orphans of the gal
lant dead are wards of the people, a sacred
legacy bequeathed to the United States for
protecting care.
11th. Foreign immigration in the past
has added so much to the wealth and in
creased resources of this nation, the asylum
of all nations, that it should be fostered by
a liberal and just policy.
12th. This Convention declares its sym
pathy with all oppressed people who are
struggling for their rights.
The following additional resolutions
were offered and adopted :
Resolved, Ttat the adjournment of this
Convention shall not work dissolution of
the same, but it shall remain as organized,
subject to be called together at any time
or place that the Republican Executive
Committee shall designate.
Resolved, AVe highly commend in a
spirit of magnanimity and forgiveness tbe
men who have served, the rebellion and
who are now frankly nnd honestly co-operating
with us in restoring peace to the
country and in the reconstruction of
Southern States on the basis of impartial
justice and equal right., and are- received
back into the communion, of loyal people,
and that we are in favor of the removal of
the disqualification or restrictions imposed
on the late rebels in the same measure as
the spirit of disloyalty disappears, as may
oe consistent with the safety of loyal pw
ple. Roto! red. That we recognize the great
principle laid down in tlio Declaration of
Independence, as the true foundation of
Democratic government, and we bail with
gladness t-v.-ry effort toward making these
principles the living reality on everv inch
of American soil. " "
