o O DOVT LEAVE THE FARM, feOYS. Come, boys, I hare something to tell you QCome near, I ivould whisper it low: You are thinking of leaving the homestead Don't be in a hurry to go,. .. J ..... The city has many attractions, But think of the vices and sins ; When once in tbyortex of fashion, I (-JIow soon the downward course begins. ' ' You talk of the mines of Australia They're wealthy in gold, without doubt ; But ah ! there is gold on the farm, boys, If only you'll shovel it out. The mercantile life is a hazard The goods are first high, and then low ; Better risk the old farm a while longer Don't be in a hurry to go.. The great busy Vest has inducements, - And so Las the busiest mart ; ; lt wealth is not made in a'day; boys Don't be in a hurry to start ! GThe bankers and brokers are wealthy ' They take in their thousands or so : Ah ! think ot the fruads and deceptions Dou't be in a hurry to go. ... Tne farm is the safest and surest The orchards are loaded to-day ; You're free as the air of the mountains, And monarch of all you survey, Better stay on the farm a while longer, Though profits should come rather slow j Remember you've nothing to risk, boys !on't be in a hurry to go ! ' OFattexixg Chickens. A constant read er of the Extekphise, gives the following directions for fattening for market or for the table, such chickens as it may riot be lesiroH3 to keep on account of any fault of form or color : Recollect, that any bird, however faulty as to color or shape, or however deformed, will do perfect eat ing. A little extra feeding " while vonn-r will cause these pariahs to contribute to the support of their more highly favored fellows. But unless for home consumption, it will be useless to kill them if they fare with the others in the yard, rutting them up will not only fatten them, but it is won derful to those unaccustomed to it, to ob serve their growth in a short time. Ama teurs, wlufkre family men, know some thing of the appelites of long, lean boys, the monstrous consumption of food, which all seems devoted to the growth of arms and legs. It is the result of exercise. It ii equally true of chickens; and it is hope less to attempt to fatten them while at lib erty. They must be put in a proper coop; and this, like most other poultry appurte nances, need not be expensive. To fatten twelve fowls, iPcoop may be three feet long, eighteen inches high, and eighteen inches deep, made entirely of bars. No part of it solid neither top, sides nor bottom. Discretion must be used accord ing to the size of tl, chickens put tip. They do not want room; indeed the closer they ftre the better provided they can all rtford up at the same time. Care must be taken to put up such as have been apus tomed to be together, or- they will fight. If one is quarrelsome it is better tore move it at once; as, like other bad exam ples, it soon finds imitators. A diseased thicken should not be put up. 'A coop, such as we have described, should be put in any out-housc where it is ered from draught, and at night should be 'corded with sacks. Fowls will not I'aii if they are cold. The bars of the i ()p Slay bo an inch and a half apart, and the food and water must be put outside. The latter must be clean, cool and fresh. " The food should be ground oats; and may either be put in a trough, or on a flat board running along the front of the coop. It may be mixed with either water or milk; the latter is belter. It should be well hlaked. forming a pulp as loose as can be. provided it does not run. off the board. They must be well fed two or three times per day the Drst time as soon after daybreak as may be possible or conveni ent, and then at intervals of three hours. Kach meal should be as much and no more than they can eat up clean. When they have done feeding, the board should be wipedund some gravel rnay be spread. It causes them to feed and ibrive. "After a fortnight of this treatment you will have good fat fowls. If, however, there arc but four or six to be fatted, they jnust not have as much room as though there were twelve. Nothing is easier than to allot them the proper space; as it is on ly necessary to have two or three pieces tf wood to pass between the bars, and to lornr a partition. This may also serve wheji fowls areup at different degrees of l.itness. This requires attention.ajr fowls will not keep fat and heallhy. As soon us the fowl is sufficiently fatted it must be killed; otherwise it will still get fat, but it will lose flesh. If fowls are intended for the market, of course they are, or may be, nil f)itted at once; but if for home con sumption, it is better to put them up at nich intervals as will suit the time when they will be required for table. When the time arrives for killing, whether they are meant for market or otherwise, they should be fasted without food or water for twelve or fifteen hours. This enables them to be kept for soft' time after being killed, even in hot weather. 'There is more trouble than expense in fattening a fowl; and if these directions are carried out, the drafts of the yard will furnish many good meals, or pay for food. It is only necessary to make one more re :ark. These instructions follow our en treaties to amateurs and breeders to dis jjose of faulty birds before they have be come costly y consumption of food. All the foregoing will be thrown away if prac ticed on old fowls; nothing will make them u-nder. Therefore, put them tip while ihey are young if you waut to eat tender, juicy fowls, and still more if yon want to sell at a good price. They are worth far more now than they will be after you have kept them three months longer." - p- Apple worms may be caught in large numbers by the simple process of wind ing bay ropo3 around the trunks of the trees, just before the worms begin to leave the fruit. The grubs will bide in the ropes lbfethc purpose of spinning their cocoons, una may be found by unwinding the coils of rope. -A farmer named Samuel Robinson, residing near Melbourn, iu Derbyshire, England, recently took the prize at Bir mingham, and the Royal Horticultural FaiAs, lor six cao wages, the aggregate weight of which was 433 pounds" bein"' a.u average of 72i ponnd3 to the cabbage. In Montgomery county, New York farmers sow two and one-half bushels of oats to the acre. And the cast of oats throughout the State of New York won't vnvy much from that; fifty bushels pr ac- would be confided a good yield. AGRICULTURAL. Notice to our Headers.
