6! EljciUcckhv (Enterprise. " , TOWN AND COr.VTY. i Tub Raii.ko.vd Qi-Esnoif. Linn, Benton, and other middle and southern counties of Oregon, arc alive on the Railroad ques tion. J. Ga-ston, has a long letter in the ijaieti. in further explanation of the " ten cent arrangement-' as he calls it. While flaston is so persistent in attending to the buiue3 of the east side, gratuitously, is he not nrtrlccting his own affairs some what. 1 le must know that the limit of the lime for him to avail himself of the Gov ernment aid of which he speaks so volum- STnously. expires on the 20th of next month. He must have by that time, twenty miles of his oicn road completed ! Anyone can see rthnt such a thing is entirelyout of the ques tion ;cnd if he does not attend to his own business better it is douhtfal if he ever gets 20 miles comfkk-d. The State aid is of no avail until the government aid is secured, nnd patents have been issued for the land. Nocread his first annual report. "We con sider that as calculated to deceive people. Now how about the Portland aid ? That hinges on h"i3 building, or rather complet ing, five miles by the 31st of December 1868. Will he do that? Or will he begin 'to do it ? Certainly not ! unless he attends to his own business. No w this -' ten cent" concern, as Gaston calls it in hi3 spleen, have graded their line to within a short distance of the Clackamas, in this county. J3y the first of next month ten miles or more will be ready for the ties and the iron the ties will be ready for the grade ; and the iron is ready for the ties while the west side expend so much Gas-ton to show that the east side have no iron ask Low ranch iron they have got? Perhaps they depend upon Billy Adam3 for that! We have no fault to find with the Yamhill ' K R. Co.; but their petty meanness and jealousy does sometimes rile our feelings. ThP wilful; low flung blackgiiadism of opcralorsam that side can win them no : esteem in places calculated to do them pood, and they better desist, and work at their enterprise honorably, if they want to succeed. -- Our friend Frank Cocper, of the Butte Creek coal and lime beds, in this county, wrote us a characteristic letter on the 1st. He thinks a railroad could be guaranteed ' 50.000 tons of freight a ytar from that vi cinity if they could only " haul in" there ; a little. We have not the least doubt in the world but that Mr, Cooper has struck a rich vein in that Ideality and that even tually it will result astonishingly toward making us ari empire. From tests made of this coal but little doubt is left as to the genuineness of its quality. It is equal to Superior coal, and we would compare this locality to .Michigan. There are now in operation several important coal mines in the State of Michigan. The coal is adapted in its different varieties to almost all purposes, whether for use in" machine shops or railways, or steamboats or for domestic purposes, and at the mine com n.andrtfroiii $2 to $." per ton, according ' to the quality. The aggregate production fdr lSu"7. was about .".()!)() toils, represent ing a value of $'.)7. ):)'), and as the busi ness is certain in future" to rapidly irierease. it can justly be regarded as one ef the nt promising sources of wealth. Q The Oregouian says : The Occident brought no locomotive : but did bring an immense boiler and engine for a saw mill, . of the O.g. U.K. Co. It is of thirty-five hiu-jt power. Mr. Elliott Informs us that finch preparations have been made for setting !t up as will enable them to put it , qUi turning order in a Very few days. The grading of the track has now progressed l to a point about a mile and a half beyond Milwiukie. The working force now em- plowed is about one hundred and sixty Won. Mr. Elliott pays a handsome com pliment to the Oregon laborers mostly i ?"hs of wrniers in the interior who have thus far been employed. They are good vmts and in nearly every case intelli 1 gent and trusty in a remarkable degree. We Mere in error about the ice , fold by Mr. Dilter of this city. It is of i " home manufacture," and was put up at the basin of the P. T. Co., of this city last ; winter. It is the finest ice wc hare Been ; on the coast varies but little less than f ten inches in thie'Jniess. and is nearly as transparent as glass. Buy some. The Sabbath School of the M. E. Church of this city will have an exhibition mi Thursday and Friday of next week. The exoresiosViU consist of declamations, dialogues, tablaux'and singing. Proceeds for the benefit of the S. S. Library. Friends of the Sabbath School give your patronage. The lectures of Rev. Father Buschard. given in this city during the course of the past week, have been incomparably able. He will continue his discourses to-morrow, and intends to leave on Monday. All -ho rtrsive to hear hihi should attend to morrow. An affray occurred at Milwaitkie on ue-uvy List between two persons, names unknown to us. which resulted in the death of no of them at the East Pgrtiand liospital, where Le had been taken for treatment. We are without authentic pur- , IJlL -Uiileties, of Puftiand canid to this city on Saturday last to play a match game with the Tumwaters, but owing to the inclemency of the weather the game was postponed unti! a more favorable op portunity. O The vote ot ;pringwater precinct, in cluded in the abstract of this County, pub lished to-day is probably correct; but it sras not properly attested before theConn iy Court. - - Iiev. G. C. Chandler will preach t the Baptist Church in this city to-morrow morning, and at the Congregational Church i;i the evening. Service at the usual hours. Ilydrographie surveys in Maine have revealed l,Vo5 sites of water power, with a working energy of 300,000 net horse power, which is about one-half the amount claim for Oregon City. The Tumwater Base Ball Club of this place, tender their thanks to Messrs. Wni. and J. L. Barlow, D. P. Thompson and C. Johnson for favors. The Brewster and Occident will both "1 partly wij, im!1 f,.oni (he Oswego '""luce, on orders from Sail Fraqcisco. Tue Ameiiicax FJihi.k Society. Mr. John Myers, of this city, is President of the Clackamas county branch of the American Bible Society, and Mr. II. L. Kelly is Sec retary. We understand that members are preparing to canvass the county ;for sub scription to the fund of the society. They will have bibles to sell at cost, and to do nate to the destitute. All persons arc asked to assist thi3 work, and the good to be accomplished is not the only consider ation a saving of more than one-half is made by purchasing of the Society, over the cost of the same books bought of a dealer. Dealers will also do well to pur chase bibles, etc., cf the Society. The fol lowing special appeal, issued in October last, shows the working of the Society : In behalf-of the Board of Managers of the American Bible Society, the Secreta ries make the following special statement and urgent appeal to the Auxiliaries, to pastors and churches, and to all friend3 of the Bible cause. During the last sit months the manu facturing facilities of the Bible House have been increased fully one third, at large expense, but not one day too soon to meet the increasing demand for Bibles and Tes taments. The issues during the same period have been 510.2C0 volumes, valued at S2S7, 9S2 67 ; viz : Sales to the amount of $256. 589 19 Donations, S21.3!3 48. The receipts from all source were $300. 157 82, while the payments were $129, 038 51. The excess of payments over re ceipts during the past six mouths was $12S,&80 GO. This deficiency was paid out of the temporary investment which accumulated during the last six years, chiefly from large legacies, and which was reserved expressly to meet extraordinary demands which were expected at the close of the war. The balance of about $50, 000 will soon be consumed at the present rate of operations. There have been .sufficient reasons for this expenditure. The resupply of the whole country with the Bible, now in progress, has caused extraordinary de mands for books sold to auxiliaries and yet to be paid for, and also for gratuitous distribution. The destitution of the south and the supply of freedmen have drawn heavily upon our benevolent lauds. Our foreign work has been extraordinarily great and costly. Most of this expenditure is so much capital laid out for f uture re turns ; a wise, pecuniary, moral, religi ous, national, and world-wide investment in the kingdom of God. It has been a grand seed-time. The harvest is not yet. That you may know how the Board of Managers have invested their trust, we give a few items covering the space of about tico years and a half, to October 1, 1867, and exhibiting our purely benevo lent work. We give chiefly the round numbers for convenience of memory. For Foreign I'wsions we have paid in cash $8-1.700 ; of this there was $60,000 for the Arabic Scriptures, $11,500 for the Hawaiian, $8,500 for the Old Slavic and Bulgarian, $4,000 for the Armeno-Turkish, and $700 for African versions. Pesides these sums we have grr.nted in ca?h to va rious Mis.dmwy Boards and Jnrtitvlbns, for publishing and circulating the crip tures in foreign lands, $122,000. We have donated to other benvvohmtso ck'iics'in this laud : the tract, Sunday School, Seamen's Friend. Freedmen "s, etc., in books to the value of $50,500. To the late Confederate States we have donated in books over $80,000, besides over $90,000 worth sent on account to the auxiliaries there ; and if to these sums we add debts cancelled, and to be cancelled, for sheer inability to pay, nearly $60,000. with cost of agencies at The South $31,000 ; the expenditure upon that portion of our country since the war reaches the round sum of $264,000. And even this has not been enough to meet the immense demand.' The sum total received from the South du ring the same time was $37,726 21 ; of which, all but $0,396 60 was for books purchased of this society. The purely gratuitous work of the so ciety within this period of two and a half years has cost nearly $4 00,000. The total mtntber f volumes issued dur ing this period of two years and a half was 2.918,748 ; and from April 1, 1661, to Oct. , 1867, 8.257,477. In view of these statements we make an urgent appeal to every friend of the American Bible Society. We need the sum total of $850,000 to carry us through this year ending March 31. "868. The receipts of the first six months were but little over $300,000. Shall we contract our benevolent opera tions? If so, where shall we begin? In the glorious foreign field! Can we refuse new grants to the Missionary Societies and Ecclesiastical Boards, for" printing and circulating the Word of God of in ver sions, new or old? Must we withhold our hands from the destitute south, exhausted as it is by war, and famine, and pestilence? Can we deny the lamp of life to the Freed men ? Must we stop the resupply of the whole country w ith the Bible, or curtail it, and tell the world that the christian peo ple of this laud are unable or unwilling to carry forward this noble jubilee enter prise of the American Bible Society ? But we forbear. Our necessity, thank God, grows not out of the lack of means, nor of work, nor of willing minds, and loving hearts, toward the bible cause. It has sprung from the past liberality of our friends, and above all from the Providen tial prosperity and successful expansion of the work itself. This is our "sign;"' and the God of the bible bids us. by these very blessings, " Speak nnto the Children of Israel that they go forxtardP We therefore request Cur auxiliaries td increase their efforts to raise funds for gratuitous work, and especially to forward without unnecessary delay all funds now in hand, or readily collected for books or on donation account. We appeal to pastors of churches to publish these facts, and to stimulate the people to enlarged liberality, in regular or special contributions. We appeal to all friends of the American Bible Society to help its earnest efforts to give the bible to our country and to other nations. AV e make these representations, above all, in the interests of the kingdom of Christ, for the salvation of the world, and for the glory of God, who has declared that his word shall not return unto him void, but it shall accomplish that where unto he sent it. The society have Completed several publications in the Arabic, probably the moat copious language in the w hole world; and are now preparing to print the Bible in the Chinese. It is an immense work, grown from the nucleus given it in 1816 by a few zealous christian gentlemen, in the city of New York, who met the ex pense of a publishing house for the pur pose of printing Bibles, tr send out to the world and see what would become of them. They cast their bread upon the waters and after many davs all nations shall find it. The new steamer of Cnpt Baughman has been successfully launched, and will be in the trade within four weeks I'rorri the look of her model we have not the least doubt but that she will be able to run to Eugene at all times. Some neo pie langh at the idea, but time Trill teli. The McGinley troupe filtered this city with their presence on Thursday, but owing to the meagre audience at Washing ton Hall the house v.'a. dismissed without an entertainment. We regret that our citizens did not turn out better ; that the i family might show them that such exhibi tions can be carried on decorously The Cannkk Pkkcixct Canemah is en titled to the banner, and we suggest that she be presented one, bearing the ominons figures " 6i vs. l.i" representing the votes given Logan and Smith respectively. Hell done, thou ;uoud little oueen ol civ- i'iz.i'iun! olackamas Coixty BiDu; SooiKTiv The second annual meeting of 'the; Clackamas county Bible Society, was held on the evening of the 29th of May last, and the following gentlemen wero elected officers for the ensuing year: John Myers, . Presi dent; C. T. Bocey, Alee President; S. D. Francis. Treasurer; H. L. Kelly, Secretary ; II. C. Myers, Depositary. Executive Com mittee: Rev. J. II. Sell wood, C. T. Locey, Chas. Pope, "WY A. Hart, Wm. Barlow. The Executive committee .desiring to canvas3 the county during the summer, have appointed a special committee, con sisting of C. T. Locey, C. Pope, and S. D. Francis, to solicit subscriptions to defray the expenses of a Colporteur, also to pro provide for lectures from time to time, to further aid in the work of canvassing the county. Any, and all persons, who feel interested in this work, are cordially invi ted to co-operate with the committee, by donating means for the prosecution of the work; also by searching out those who are destitute of the Scriptures, (and una ble to supply themselves), and informing the committee of the same, in order that their needs may be supplied, by the Soci ety. H. Li. KELLY, Secretary, Bible Society. The Oregonian of Wednesday says : A considerable delegation of Democrats from Oregon City came down on one of the steamers last evening, to join in the Democratic circus, of the postponement of w hich they had not heard. ' They renewed their allegiance, looking through the bot torn of a tumbler, and returned to Oregon City without having carried ary torch ---- Cascades precinct is a Democratic stronghold, but there are two Union men out there who have not " bowed the knee to- the image of Baal,"' but are found "faithful among the faithless still.'' Stand firm, friends, and see the salva tion of the Lord ! " A little leaven leaven- eth the whole lump."' Our neighbor Ralston across the way must feel that he was deprived of some of his glory on Tuesday night as he visited Portland for the purpose uf bearing a torch in the Democratic procession, and was recorded as "Mr. William Ralston, who had just been elected County Treasur er by a majority of five, and of course felt like jubilating a little." Organization. In those precincts where our friends have been at work, and thor oughly organized, the result ha's been fa vorable to the Union cause. Marqnam precinct is redeemed and Oswego has more than met b ;r expectations, as a re sult of organization. The steamer Wenat has a new whistle, which is a great improvement on the orig inal.
