If these are not ' dog days," and if
yrt do not long for a draught of cold ice
water, we are not composed of such an
amount of abnormal frigidity as to make
us despise ice. We found the words: ; Ice
p in our memorandum book on
Wednesday. It was a puzzle: we conclud
ed that we" should be obliged to make our
"mtms" a little plainer in future; but just
then we reccollected that " Ice L. P.."
ws to remind us that the celebrated Ice
Depot at Portland lad established an agen
cy here and that our friend Leonard Dil
ler, of the Lincoln, would poon be able to
gratify a larger majority of our citizens.
His ice-cream is excellent, and he will be
nble to supply orders for ice as well.

The weather is nnpitying. Like an
individual who lias been complimented by
the Tress for his acts without a grain of
appreciation the weather has given us
fits ever since last Saturday: that is to say:
we bare had all kinds but, on the whole
who would complain. All nature, except
tinman nature .acts in accordance with
Viods laws. In spite of all those seemly
obstacles, we look all about us, and see
Crichly colored carpets spread out under
the clear light of Heaven, which would
afford health acd happiness to many of
tho huddled poor of the great cities, if
they could only reach here.
In order to do good and see it con-
tribute something in aid of the American
Bible Society. e had prepared a short
article on the subject for this issue, but
it i.. unavoidably, laid over. Rev. I. P
Drirer, who is about as sound and able a
divine as we ever listened to. gave the
citizens of this place two discourses on
Sunday last. He is traveling in aid of the
society.

Petitions are in circulation asking the
Council for aid in the erection of a new
flight of steps over the bluff from Fourth
street; and the establishment of a separate
district, for a school east of High street.
Roth are of great importance to the resi
dents in that vicinity, and we hope to hear
that the Council favor the petitions with
what is asked for, Oregon City is begin
ning to spread to proportions such as
renders extra legislation necessary.
Somebody in the interest of the west
side road took particular pains to caution
one of our manufacturers not to trust the
rast side conipiiny for a cent. This ad
vice was wholly gratis. We presume the
Company doiot ask for credit on wheel
barrows, carts, etc., but if they do tbey
an have it -right here in Oregon City, of

In spite of all the evil prophecies last

The Xorth American Steamsship

ships afloat, deserve to be patronized for
the perseverance with . which they have

our shores peopled with enterprising peo
ple. Their advertisement may be found in
