0 LADIES' CHOICE. AMONG TUE S T A It S . Suggested by the singular and beautiful spectacle of the Moon, and the evening stars ( Venus and Jupiter,) in close neighborhood earft ia4he year 13G3. u o 0 Diana in the purple dome, nr sky-btiflf. palace, sat at home ; A natron she. her clear calm face, Smiled down benigiff with mother grace, Where Venus, her fair daughter, stood Kad'ait in first felt womanhood. O Dreaming new dreams of love's romance, Enkindled by her starry glance ; Dreams not without a sweet surprise, As looQng through lore's magic glass, We sometimes see in woman's eyes, transfigured forms of beauty pass ; And pulses thrill, with sudden pride, To see ourselres there, glorified Not what we are, for seldom we o Are what our spirits pant to be, 'Till love, and woman's eyes, restore The Eden dreams of days of yore. o Hut I have strayed Sweet Tonus saw, iTjjouing their way, young Jupiter ; Wii 'though he felt inclined to draw O Nigh to the damsel, loving her, Yet stood aloof, in pride or shame, Though hall inviting glances.0 came, And her fair bosom rose and fell q In qtiicji beats, like a white doves wings, o )r music, with voluptuous swell, WUQJ passion strikes the trembling strings. Venus smiled; frowned; smiled yetngain Then spoke I vow, these stupid men Vould worry patience more than mine; -I cannot bear to see them pine, O ' Vexing the air with stormy sighs, ''And, feigning us a Paradise, 'Mock us in act, for who could bear, If Heaven was free, not to be there? Maidenhnid maiden byld Fair Venus, in her matchless grace. (This i.sjhe truth, as I am told.) While rosy blushes wreathed her face Stooped, to her stupid worshipper, And shell-curved lips, breathed in his ear, -Come love me, kingly Jupiter, Let weaker women, weakly fear, To claim their privilege, this year.' O Light Kindled on his ruddy face, And Jupiter, with prompt embrace, In Love's unsated hunger, strips Kisses, from eyelids, cheek.?, and lips, Till, half devoured, she fled amahi, In blushes, to her mother's side, And gossips, say, the lucky swain, Will gain the damsel for his bride. O So ends the tale. I had to tell. Of how the '-Ladies Choice," befell. Py which you see, in such like jokes, Ta stars, are much like other folks. Harry Hopeful. Oregon City, May, 1SG8. -:-"". q FAItM ITEMS. The roof required to shelter ani finals properly will shed enough va' ftvr, icaught in a cistern, to last them liis'car round. The ideal can be exhibited as rrnuch in planting trees and flowers and in making home happy and beau- (tjful.as in writing poetry. Many women are turning thei'r Attention to bee making and doing well. The difference is great be tween these, and women who are a O fraid of spiders. The Southern papers boast that the uhitts make better farmers than the blacks, and they give many ins Ktances to prove it. The blacks must wake up or they will lose ground. The Canadian Legislature has Affixed penalties from $5 to 850, for felling to a cheese factory milk that is adulterated, sour, unclean, skimed, or without the last part of the milk ing. The London dairymen have de cided that the most profitable cows nre gded short horns, not because ihey give more milk, but because when past milking, they make most bec f. In Chicago and other Western rities, the new business of planting forest-trees has been started, and it is pfitaMe. Elm and other trees, six ifieftes in diameter' are planted and warranted to grow, for $5. Philanthropists have discovered thaJlhe hog is a cleanly, not a filthy animal ; that he loves nothing so nitias.to be neat, and that his squealing is an evidence of nervous irritability, the same as in poets. G Eggs How to Pack them The following directions are given, by one who has had a good deal of egg packing to do, as the best method: "Always ue clean oats. First put them one inch deep in the bot tom of the barrel; then a pretty firm sheet of paper; then aalf inched oats again, well pressed ; then eggs, onds up, followed by oats and eggs jis before, lt working each iayer of .ats with the hand snugly down jtround the eggs next the barrel, as well asPrubbing them effectually in Vetwren each of the eggs in the lay i r. I use a board some six or eight iiK-hes square, wit!) a loop or staple i: the center, for pressing each layer f oats firmly down. There will be 0 something gained by lifting and drop ping the bafyel square on the end, fc.ut not by shaking, as it disturbs the layers. When it gets tco heavy to lift, use a board three fourths as large as the head, and get on it, in rseasing your weight with a spring. Eud as you begin, with paper and oats, getting on the head and driving it in. Tdie secret lies all in packing the oats. Oats are better worth nend'ng to market than hay, and just 01 as safe. I have sent ten barrels at a time without losing a single egg. Yon must pack tight. '.llerasmber How to Save Tools. Have a place for every tool, no matter how insignificant it may be, and on clos ing shop, see,, or cause to bs seen, that every tool is in its place. This, though an old rule, has been the foun dation of many a fortune. Another good rule is to keep your tools sharp, and in otherwise good order. The hands will niver lose sight of them, so long as they are in usable condi tion. And stil! another rule, is nev er to buy any but the very best tools to be procured either at home or abroad. A poor workman may turn out tolerable work with good tools, when a good workman can do uolh but botch with bad tools. Peaches Without Stoxes. An agriculturist ha?, it is said, tried with success the following method of mak ing peaches grow without stones: Turn the tops of the trees down, cut off the ends, stick them into the ground and fasten them so with stakes; in a year or two those tops will take root, and when well rooted cut off the branches connecting those reversed and rooted branches with the tree proper, and this reversed peach tree will produce tine peaches without stones. The same experi ment may be tried with plums, cher ries, and currants. In the West, farmers differ as to the value of horse riding cultivators. The sum of the evidence is, that when the ground had been in small grain, and in good order, these cuU tivators are admirable ; stubble and rough ground, detestable. One reason why Gen Grant is s j fond of fast horses, probably is be cause he thinks he can run pretty well himself. REPl'BLlt'AX I'L.ATFOIS.M: Ailopicfl Jit SiiTem jrarcii ltli 1SGS. 1. Resolved.
