Kyan Esq.. of this city. i a man with whom we have never had any personal difficulty indeed, we sLould never have the least trouble with anybody, if men were all as fair as be, yel this Mr. Kyn took occasion last Saturday to walk into our Sanctum where be clubbed ns beautifully. Qlc did not " upset our ap plecart" as thefacitious State Kights man said the brute Burns of. rar.tfc notoriety once did, nor mash a hickory sfk over our cranium as an overgrown traitor of thia town threatened to do, but he did pro duce a club of about 70 names fur the Enteiu-iu.sk, with the pay in advance, for ;eh he has our gratitude. We only fw'a that Union men generally would imi tate this example. We ore always glad to enter upon our books the mimes of cash mibucriberfl. And there is plenty of room for hundreds more of Clackamr.s county people. Wc feel, and have forborne month, f.-lt. that the E.vtekprisk is too poorly sus tained at home. We are frank to say that the Oiost 'nf our patronage has conn; from outside counties, but, as surprising as it may seem, this has made the business re munerative to us. From the very nature of things Oregon City could not sustain a paper like this ; nor can the place as it is -w present, give the paper a name to cause it to be sought for abroad ; but we do say. I and can satisfactorily show it, that the Ex- tekpki.sk has contributed largely, during I it brief existence, to give Oregon City I prominence. Now, if this is the object of I a press at home, ought not every proper I ty owner to false it upon himself to see that the press is supported as it should be? Men who own the lanjcst interest in the town site, water-power, etc., are the men ! who encourage us the least, and yet, we t pit up at night burning oil and using ink : and paper bPfurther the interest of Ore O gon City, and consequently their interests, whilst they fileip and dream. Here nn I lure has in:id one of her grainiest efforts for nSn ; given us one of the finest water j privileges the world ever produced ; and i nn abundance of material blessings ; yet. does the place keep pace with the State In its onward progress? Pursuant to notice a large number of the Union voters of Oregon City met at the Court House at 7- o'clock last evening. The convention was called to order, and W. 'Y. Buck, Esq. chosen to preside ; Messrs. Fred. Charman and Owen Wade were secretaries. The following ticket was placed in nomination : For Mayor, DR. FORBES BARCLAY. For Recorder, JOHN M. RACOX. For Councilmen, A. J. APPEESOX, JAMES W. CHASE, WM. I5ROUGIITOX, 1). P. THOMPSON", GEORGE A. PEASE. J. W. SIIATTL'CK, W. J. CALDWELL. For Treasurer, FRED. CIIARMAX. For City Attorney, DENTON K I LL1X. For Marshall, WM. VANDERVORT. For Street Commissioner, WM. VANDERVORT. For School Superintendent, DR. F. BARCLAY. It is hardly necessary for us to say anything in favor of the candidates as they are all well known respected people. Indeed Calchas, and beings of his kidney, are the only descrip tion of sentient minds who could of fer one objection to the ticket, and, thank the Lord, they are of so little consequence that their blackguardism amounts to nothing in Oregon City. We trust that Union men will rally to the support of the nominees on Monday, and we know that if voters do their duty victory will be certain. It should be a gratification, to be able to cast another ballot for Dr. Barclay for Mayor. There can be no firmer, truer, or more tried friend to the interests of the city than Dr. Barclay. There is evidence of this in the fact that he has been the butt of all villainous attacks by the assassinalionists for two or three years past. The samo may be said of Mr. Bacon. Novr, Union men, hurl these mal icious assaults back upon the heads of the Calchas clique, and show them that you do not need advice from traitorous scamps and renegades. School SurEniNTEXDEXT. The nominee of the Union party for the Superintendency of City Schools, is also the nominee for Major Dr. Forbes Barclay. Dr. Barclay is one of the first settlers of Oregon City, and has fur very many years taken a deep interest in all matters appertain ing to the public good. His nnnie is Sa5 P,aCcd bofore t,:t Pple for these important positions because of his impartial devotion to the wants of the community. When the question of onr public schools is discussed, let it not be forgotten that Dr. Barclay is really the father of the Seminary, iti its present advanced state. hen the office of School Superintendent was created Dr. Barclay was selected to Cll the position, and although the task is a thankless one, he has contin ued to pay strict attention to it from year to year, until iiD'a and the school shows for itself. From a few scholarsj attending at leased premises illy adapted to the purpose, we find the city owning a handsome building, and an average quarterly attendance of over 200 scholars, pursuing ad. vanced studies. We are quite sure that Dr. Barclay will be re elected if he is not, the school will receive a check, not desirable by the friends of education. The funeral of Miss Fannie Toner, daughter of Mr J. G. Toner of this city, was largely attended on Thursday by sympathizing friends. The order of Good Tcmplers turned out and followed her remains to their last resting place. Ilev, G. II. At kinson preached the funeral sermon. The Democrats of this county opened the polls on Saturday Jast and voted for candidates for county offices. The votes have not yet been couutcd, and we are unable to say positively who was nominated. It is supposed, however, that the nom inees are Messrs. Myers, Kalston, & Co. We are requested to announce that Miss Amanda Shaw will open a Select School on Monday next, in the building on Main street, opposite the residence of Dr. Barclay. We wish her success, and bespeak for her a good attendance. Hon J. II. Mitchell, whom it would always do Democrats good to listen to, will address the Grant club of this city at tho Court House this evening. A series of lectures, exposing spiritualism, by Kev. Air. Poster, will conclude iu this city at the Uoui t House on Monday evening next. . Rev. Mr. Murphy, of Salem, will preach at the Congregational church in this city, this evening. ( Afk your neighbor to subscribe ' for the E.NitKriiisE. i' Apostatized. When McKenney re nounced his faith and went over to the Democrats, there was a great hue and cry about it. But this. Was after the Chinese fashion, as described by Evans, in Lis speech on the impeachment question. '.' ioxy concussion than discussion' about it. The Democrats are not so blantant about C. E. Murray, J. B. Walsh, Hiram Straight, and others of the miterrified who came out from that traitorous party, and took an active part in making the nomi nations, and voting for city officers, at the Union Convention last night. Of course they will support the ticket, as no man of honor, who-respects himself, would intrude such manners, unless he was act ing in good aith. They would not. cer tainly not, like to be classed among the roughs, w ho sometimes disturb such meet ings with dire impudence, hence we may rest assured that they will vote for the nominees of the Union party, next Mon day. Elected Tumii Mex. An over-joyful Cop. was heard prancing up and down town on Saturday evening, singing happi ly ''we've elected our men ;"' we've elect ed our men and no argument could convince him to the contrary. He held that the election was over, ami Democrats were elected to county offices because the "nigger-equality, " black republicans were not allowed to vote. FltOM TDK FliANKI.IX B'JOK SlOliK. S. J. May 9!h, to have a grand Basket Picnic, and a speech from Sullivan, who has promised to be present. The ladies are all with us. "To Lsrr." We call the attention of builders to the fact that contracts for the erection of Odd Fellows Hall, in this city, will be lotto the lowest responsible bidder. Mark Twain gives Durlingamc a great deal of credit for what his mission to China has accomplished. No decision has as yet been rendered in the case of the people of the U. S. against A. Johnson Presi dent thereof. Probably on no occasion in the histories were more able arguments made use of pro and con, in any case, than in the impeachment trial at Washington. Butler, Williams, Fv arts, Nelson, and others have, it would seem, actually exhausted the fic'Js of thought and expression to produce their effect in debate. Don't Auvkutise. Don't adver tise ; it is a very poor plan. It will call attention to your place of busi ness, niicl it is much belter fur people who wish to trade with you to hunt you up. It gives your customers ex ercise, and makes them healthy. Besides, if you adrertise somebody will buy up all your goods, and then you will have to get more, and it will be a great bother to you. lilED In Oregon City, on Wednesday a. m., April '.i'.ith, of Consumption, Faxxie M., daughter of J.
