Among other false statements being made use of by the left wing of Trice's army in this county is : That Sheriff Burns has collected a large amount of taxes more than he has accounted for. Now, the Democrats know that Sherilf Utirns ba.s done no such thing. They know that every such statement is a base. ungrateful, unmitigated falsehood. 1 hey know that he has collected and turned over to the county for six years past, the taxes assessed here, nearer to the full amount than any heri;f or tax collector ever elected by them. They know that these attacks upon Mr. Burns are wilful, mischievous, and solely of a personal character. Last November the tax list for LSG7 was placed in his hand-", lie is required by law to pay over to the Treas urer once in each month. This he has done promptly ; and as required by law on Tuesday last in making a return to the April session of the County Court we find that out of the total tax S:iO.:lO,h7. be has collected and paid over S2!?.320.56 or to within S2.070.31 of the whole sum. for all of w hich he has the receipt of the County Treasurer. This does not look very muchjike an embezzlement of funds, does it ? Look at the facts in the case, and then judge as to the ungratefulness of these charges by Democrats against Mr. Uurns. lie has never, in but one instance, sold personalsproperty to make taxes. lit has waited upon Ijemocreds months for their tai-es, and in some cases when it was necessary to m.vke his returns, has paid money oxd of his oven pocket, etnd collected ff 'delinquents afterwards, (the larger por- lion of whom were Democrats,) rather than force a sale of their effects. We do certainly think that Mr. Burns will retire from oifice with more friends than men generally have, at the expiration of a long term like his has been iu the unenvi able place he has filled. And further; that with the exception of the few w hining curs on his track, none will refuse to en dorse all that he has done. To utterly destroy such statements as have been cir culated regarding the transactions of Mr. Burns we appeal to the books of the fiherilf and Treasurer, which will show that, instead of his paying the largest pro portion over in scrip, he has paid it in coin. The records show that on the lOih of November the tax roll was placed in his hands for collection. On the 5;h. titli. Uth, 12th a-Hd 20th of December, pay ments were mad-;, aggregating $10,851,71. of which $7.ii1.5o, were in coin. In January three payments were made ag gregating $(i.723.21. of which sum .3.023.- 1 was in coin. In February two pay ments, aggregate 1 478.40, were made, of which $3.21)0 was in coin. On Match 7th $1,831,80 was paid, of which sum $1,790. !):) was i'i coin. On Tuesday la-t. April 7th $1,420.10 was paid, of which S2.4M.tSG was in coin. The total sum of $28,320.51!. being the whole amount collected to April 7th, thus shows to have been paid over as follows : Gold Coin County Scrip Total Amount yet due . We appreciate the liind, uninterested advice of those of our Democratic friends who wish r.s v eil so long as we make a good local paper. They tt:y they will give us praise for that but cannot support a political paper here. They say there ought, not to be but tico papers in the State devoted to polities and they ought to be monsters ; beside the Mnail. little daniiy county papers, which should be derotcJ tr ayrlcuUure, etc. But. let us ask where will you find a Democratic paperin Oregon half as devoted to the matenal interests of their locality as the Republican sheets? Gentlemen: "If you can neglect your own nppropria inents. but praising that In others, wherein yon excel yourself, You shall be lunch believed here.'' The Enterprise made iis appearance on the 27th of October lss-JG. iu our leader of that day we said : As has been the case with us for the past four years of our connection vih the leading paper of the State, we shall con stantly aim to deserve well of the publ c We sh ill spare no exertions to make the K iTKiu'K'sa a welcome visitor to every household and place of" business in the Sure, an i shall look for our reward in a substantial encouragement which outlives O the transient excitements brought about by the advocates of political parties. Wo shall not wholly ignore the political sohool itisamitter ot impossibility to be strictly neutral iu these days. All people have their political preferences, and we have ours. We believe it to be the duty ol all loyal and liberty loving people to aid in strengthening the hands of Congress in the contest which now s.-ems inevitable, and for such ends, when political subjects jm discussed in the Ocolumns of the E.vrERi'RLs;:, we shall lend our efforts. We have kept those principles in viev? nnd shall continue, as we have walked in the past. A Pioxeehs Visit. For the first time in about twelve year, on Weiaes liy last oar worthy cotempor.iry across the fray. Jlr. J. Flenrnz. visited Portland. There are certainly but few persons in Ihe world who can show a more close attention to "business than Mr. Fleming. We are pleas ed to learn that he was well treated by old a-oeiates on this visit. Ilis allotted days are drawing to aclo-e. and soon time shall vcort him across the widcrivertoth.it land so often promised by Jehovah to the Patriarchs of old. Mr. Flemhnr, it may not be generally known, is the Pioneer of Printers on the" Pacific Co ist. at a very early day. here in Oreiron City, he pub lished the first journal, west of the Mis souri river, and from that time to the present has lived and been respected by all by whom he has been surrounded. Salmon. We have elsewhere referred to the trout of this county, but it must not 1e prrsumed that we have no heavier fish. The Willamette Falls have always been famous for salmon. Mr. Gordon is this year catching more of them than ever. In no other country, that we can speak from n knowledge of, are salmon anil trout such ordinary dishes that the laboring man will even turn up his nose at them. The delicacies of other hinds are common food in Oregon oysters, fi-h. game, and every product under the sun. may be had here ia abundance. Cocxty Cotkt. The April session of the County Court for this county. Judge Mat-b-R-k presiding, was unimportant. Judge Matlock has tried many of the most im portant cases that ever attracted attention from the P.ar, within a year past, and no doubt feels a relief at a" short respite. Stoppeo. We regret that we were unable to visit the school during the teim. We feel that it is principally owing to neglect that we did not ; and we promise our faithful Principal to dd better in the fu ture. We feel a pride in the school, how ever, whether we find time to visit it or not, and from what we are able to learn, from disinterested parties, all citizens have cause to be proud of the Institution. The progress of the pupils, we have been as sured, in all departments during the term just ended has been inure marked than during any preceding term of the year. We doubt whether any one Institution in the fcjtulo embraces a more extended course of studies from the alphabet to the classics, and from, the simplest rules to the most abstract sciences. In fact, the Su perintendent has for some time had it in view to obtain a charter tor the Seminary, by which means it would soon rank among the graduate Institutions of the country. Trolt Fisuino. There is hardly a brook in this county in which the speckled trout is "ot 10 ue tounu : uiu ine viacKanias, on account of iis purity and coldness, is no doubt the favored resort of those beauties. Several of" our friends have lately made raids upon these streams, and the luck ones, or the adepts et well paid. For two Saturdays past " the boys of the office" have met with very good success. They report that bayous are plenty which af forded more than average spurt, and that if the sportsm in is a shrewd desciple of old Izaak he may hit localities that are sure to give him minting to his hearts con lent. Once in a while we hear accounts that fairly excite in us the highest pisca torial enthusiasm ; but when we hear the other side, i. e. the adventures cf such trout (idle men as Bud T. .or AI. W. . v. e think we can appreciate a string of the speckled delicacies better by ' hooking on'" to them without the aid of line and ' fly," at some heap spread out miscella neously about the doors of our provision stores. We admire trout, but we hesitate to tread upon the brink of slippery shores, or hang suspended from limbs 'where hats, meerschaum pipe and gold watches are sometimes lest overboard. Accordingly, discontinuing their further manufacture, it is determined to issue in future only stamped envelopes. These will be issued of all sizes and of ail icites of postage; and to encourage their general use, they will be sent to any addicts, when three hundred are oruered. with the printed notitieadou on the back to return to the writer if not called for in a specified time. This reloading aiso will be done free of postage; In so doing the Department has met a pub ic want, and soon we shall s. e no more stamps separate from the en velopes.
