Painful Accident. On last Wednesday
eft-moon, Mr. John Delany, late of Corn
wall, Ontario, was suddenly killed near
this city, where he was i-mplnyed in setting
o it lo"S for the Portland mills. He was
accompanied by a young man, son of Mr.
V. M. Kinearson, and was in the act of
fastening a chain to a very heavy log for
the purpose of rolling it from the truck,
when the cattle attached to the chain,
started un. it is supposed catching the
hand of Mt Delany between the log and
the chain, and before he could extricate
Lis hand be was caught between two logs.
The lad, seeing the position of allairs
quickly started the log away, releasing
Mr. Dylan v, but the injuries were fatal.
Dr. Barclay was sent lor and arriv ed upon
the ground perhaps within thirty minutes
after the disaster, but all medical aid was
unavailing, and the injured man died in a
.hort time. The head and face was severe
ly brui. e 1. and tne lower jaw was fractur
ed in two places. Dr. Barclay found him
Qcomotose. and he seemed to die from rup
tures of blood-vessels of the lungs. Mr.
Delany leaves an only brother here, but
we understand has numerous relatives in
Ontario. His age was about thirty-five
years. lie came to this community but
jecently. yet he leaves many friends who
esteemed him lor his energy and honora
ble course as a man. lhe remains were
intered in Oregon City Cemetery on
Thursday afteroon.
Bad Boys. Oregon City as we have be
fore stated ha3 numerous candidates grow
ing up for the State Penitentiary. We
caution the parents of these sons now,
that by sparing the rod they are surely
heaping grief upon their own heads. Our
employees have suffered annoyances at
the hands of these boys until " forbearance
Las ceased to be a virtue'' and it' the
public authorities or the parents of the
boys. do not attend to them we shall
take the matter into our own hands. We
swear not to bear these insults any longer.
If it has come to such a pass in Oregon
City that bad boys rule the public
thoroughfares in day-time, what must be
expected of those boys in a year or two.
Close The iron works at Oswego
'blowed ont" on the 27th for repairs.
These works Lave proven by the first run,
that iron of the very bef't quality can be
made in Clackamas county. We predict
that Oregon iron, like Oregon flour, will
soon command a premium in San Francis
co. We should like very nliich to witness
the erection of a half dozen furnaces like
this one, at Oswego but wiil say just'here
by way of parenthesis, that injunctions and
law-suits will never build a city. Lookat
Oregon City for example.

Shad:-: Tkkks. The spirit to plant shade
trees has started through this city, this
Spring, like a contagion. In less than ten
years the beauty of the movement will be
the more appreciated. Every man. woman
and child, ought to be compelled by law
to pi ant, a tree sometime during their lease
ftflil'e, for ornament. Mr. S. IJ. Buyes is
deserving of a vote of thanks tor his ener
gy in awaking the people of Oregon City
upon this subject. The trees being planted
are mostly maples such as Californians

1. Resolved. That it is the highest duty
of every American citizen to maintain
against all their enemies the integrity of
the Union atd the paramount authority of
the Constitution and laws of the United
States, and to preserve at the ballot-box
the fruits of the late war.
2. Resolved. That the work of recon
struction of the Southern States belongs
to the legislative department of the gov
ernment and that we endorse the thirteenth
and fourteenth amendments to the Con
stitution and the acts of Congress coin
aionly called the reconstruction acts, as
the best plan yet proposed for the resto
ration of the States lately in rebellion to
their former relations to the Federal Gov
ernment. 3. Resolved. That we are in favor of ad
mitting the rebel States to representation
in Congress at the earliest practicable mo
ment which the public safety wiil permit.
4. Resolved. That the national debt was
necessarily contracted to save the national
life and ought to be honestly paid, and we
condemn every scheme devised for the re
pudiation of the whole or any part of the
debt a3 disgraceful to lhe Republic and
unjust to its citizens, and that the propo
sition to pay in legal tender notes those
debts contracted to be paid in specie, is
only a milder term for repudiation.
f . Resolved. That, under the Constiti -tion,
the Federal Government has no right
to interfere with the elective franchise in
any State having representation in Coi -gress
and where civil government is not
overthrown by rebellion.
4. Resolved, That the right of expatri; -tion
is the natural and inherent right of
all people and indispensable to the enjoy
ment of the rights of life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness : that while" the citizen
owes allegiance to the Government, the
Government owes protection to the citizen,
and that it is the duty of the Government
of the United States to protect, all its
citizens, native born and naturalized, in
the full enjoyment of their rights as cit
izens of the United States, wherever and
under whatever color or pretence those
rights may be in-vaded.
7. Resoled. That the foreign immigra
tion, which in the past has added so much
to the wealth, development of resources,
and increase of power of this nation, the
asylum of the oppressed of all nations,
should be fostered and encouraged by a
liberal and just policy ; and that we sym
pathize with all people- everywhere who
are struggling for civil and religious lib

Vmerican people are due to the soldiers
and sailors of the army and navy who have
perilled their lives "in defense of their
country and in vindication of the honor of
iis flag ; that the nation owes to them
some permanent recognition of their pa

permanent provision for those of their
survivors who have received disablirg and
honorable wounds in the service of iheir
country ; and that the memories of those
who have fallen in its defense shall be

A Successful Establishment.
Among the most successful establishments
in the country is that of Howe A Stevens,
manufacturers of Family Dye Colors. They
employ a large number of persons, and their
patrons are to be found in every part of lhe
country. Their dyes are of tho'best quality,
never fade, are sold cheap, are easily snad,
and give universal satisfaction.

supplied with goods at cost, if they agree
to mention the fact to their congregations."

The First governors. A para
graph frotn the Enterprise, giving the name
date of inaugural and term of oflice, of the
seveial governors of Oregon, says a cor
respondent of the Advocate, needs correction
in some of its dates. Geo. Abernethv, the
first governor, was elected in 1s t.") under the
provisional government, for two years ; re
elected in 147, and served until" about the
first of March, 1840, when Gen. Joseph Lane,
the first appointee of the general govern
ment, took the oath of office. It is easier to
set the dates right now than it will be, years
hence. The many statements regarding the
advantages of purchasing dry goods, c'oth
ing, etc., at Knhn A Fishel's yf Front street
Portland, needs no correction.
Pain is supposed to be the lot of
us poor mortals as inevitable as death, and
liable at any time to come upon us. There
fore it is important that remedial agents
should be at hand to be used on any emer
gency, when we are made to teel the ex
crutiating agonies of pain, or the depress
ing influence of disease. Such a remedial
agent exists in the "Pain Kiiler," the fame
of which has extended over all the earth.
Amid ttie eternal ices of the Polar region, or
beneath the burning sun of the tropics, its
virtues are known and appreciated. 1 he ef

taken internally in canes of colds, coughs,
bowel complaints, cholera, dysentery, an oth
er affections of the svstem. lias been truly
wonderful, and lias won for it a name among
medical preparations that can never be for
gotten. Its success in removing pain, as an
external remedy, in cases of burns, bruises.
Sores, sprains, cuts, sling of insects, and
other causes of suffering, has secured for it
the most prominent position among the
medicines of the day. -$ Rewaie of conn

and all complaints of either sex
arising from Bodily Weakness, whether

PRODUCED BY SPECIAL CAUSES.
"VTOTHING Tlf AT IS NOT WHOLE
LN some, genial, and restorative in its na
ture, enters into the composition of HOS
TETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. This
popular preparation contains no mineral of
any kind ; no deadly botanical element ; no
fiery excitant ; but is a combination of the
extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants,
with the purest aud mildest of all ditlusive
stimulants.
The week stomach is rapidly invigorated,
and the appetite restored by this tonic, and
hence it works wonders in cases of Dyspepsia,
and in less confirmed forms of Indigestion.
Acting us a gentle and painless aprient, as
well as upon the liver, it also invariably re
lieves the Constipation superinduced by ir
regular action of the digestive aud secretive
organs.
Persons of feeble habit, liable to Nervous
Attacks, Lowness of Spirits, and Fits of
Languor, find prompt und permament relief
from the Bitters. The testimony on this
point is conclusive, and from both sexes.
As a Genuine Tonic, HOSTETTER'S BIT
TERS produce effects which must be expel i
enced or wituessed before they can be fully
appreciated. In cases ot Constitutional
Weakness, Premature Decay, and Debilit;
and Decrepitude arising from old age, it ex
ercises the electric influence. In the conva
lescent stages of ail diseases it onerates as a
delightful invigoraut. When the powers of
nature are relaxed, it operates to re-enforce
and re-establish them.
Last, but not least, it ii the only safe stim
ulant, being manufactured from sound and
inncuous materials, and entirely free from
the acrid elements present more or less in
all the ordtuarv tonics and stomachics ot the
dav. SOLD EVERYWHERE.
