Patent Excavator. Mr. Daniel
Clos9, of IIarmonsbu-g, Crawford
county, Pennsylvania, has invented a
iew and useful excavator for loadir.gj
O transporting, and unloading earth.
This excavator consists of four wheel.-,
.like- a common wagon, with broad
tire on tfte hind wheels, with eleva
tors on the inside of the tire, which
re Glled by right and left hand plows
ihiig in stirrups to the bed piece of
the box. Inese plows are so ar
ranged as to be raised and lowered
by chains and levers, operated by the
driver on his seat, lhe elevators
cany the ground, and, empty it in
lhe (box, at the rate cf one hun
dred pounds per second. The
ground ia unloaded by means of
valves in the bottom of the box,
which are opened and shut with
chain and lover, also operated by the
driver. This excavator is drawn by
horses, anti the whole operation is
performed without stopping the team.
Mr. Close has also invented an ar
ra moment for feeding cattle and
sheep, which consists of a double
fed trough, and each, combined and
so arranged as to give all stock an
equal chance, in feeding every kind of
feed without ?nste.
How to Cuke Hams. The hams
of Maryland and Virginia have for a
long time enjoyed a high reputation.
Premiums for hams were awarded at
a late meeting of the Maryland Ag
ricultural Society. Those who had
opportunities of cxaming the hams,
sejan t, says the American Farmer ,
i;hat ihcy were of excellent quality.
The following is the recipe after
-:hich those were packed down
which received the first premium:
" For one hundred pounds of pork
take ciyht pounds of pulverized alum,
two ounces of saltpetre, two pounds
of brown sugar, one and a half
ounces of potash, and four gallons of
water. Mix the above ingredients
and pour them upon the meat, after
it has lain about two days in the tub.
Let the hams lie about six weeks in
tha pickle, and let them dry off a
few days before smoking them. I
generally rub the meat with fine salt
when 1 pack it down. The meat
hould be quite cold before it is
packed in the tubs."
How to Salt Beef. For every
100 pounds of beef, take 1 ounces
of Baltpere, 2 pounds brown sugar,
5 pounds good salt, and 2i gallons
Nvatcr; mix all together and boil the
mass till all the hard ingredients are
ihoroughly dissolved; then let the
brine cool and pour it over themeat,
which must be packed tight and
weighted down. The pickle should
entirely cover the brine.

Instead of patches of land fit to
cultivate, this country ought to bloom
like a garden, from the sea to the
srreat lakes.
The custom in the best Irish dairy
establishments is to dispose of a cov,
directly her milk falls below two
gallons a day, and buy another in her
place.
Joseph Cloud, of E st York, says
he raised a pumpkin vine 780 feet
Ion?-, which bore 348 pounds of
pumpkins, the largest of which
weighed 00 pounds.
The best early potato, a corre
spondent from Champaign county,
Illinois, finds to be the Scbcc. In
Illinois it ripens in the least number
of days, and is the most prolific at
least such has been his experience
lait yt ar.
If the spring put forth no blossoms,
in summer there will be no beauty,
and in autumn no fruit. So if youth
be trifled away without improvement
riper years will be contemptible, and
old age miserable.
The discoveries and developments
in farming, in mechanics, in science,
in literature, in mining, and in the
human race itself, which yet are to
come, will work such changes that,
in comparison, we are now only peep
ing through the shell.
In getting blooded stock one knows
what he gets. Still, some of the
common stock is best, but it is hard
: to find. The difference is the same
as between college and self'education.
The latter is best, but it is hard to get,
and many are spoiled in getting it.
The French chemists say that barn
yard manure contains all the elements
of fertility, whether animal or vege
table. Artificial manures are substi
tutes, but adulteration is so common
that the farmer should buy them pure
and mix to suit himself.
There is no market for surplus
grain except what is made by manu
facturing people. The most profita
ble farms are within hearing of fac
tory bells. Illinois paid for British
railroad iron with ten -cent corn. She
pays for American railroad iron with
fifty-cent corn.
la England, less than 150 men own
half of the land. One man can ride
100 miles in a straight line on his
own land. In their poor-houses are
millions of people who cannot sleep
till after i! o'clock at night, for not till
then do the vormiu qet through fjed-
ing.
In Chilli they have only the Ital
ian bees which do well; their honey
becomes as hard and white as tallow;
for eight months there is no rain.
One man, near Santiago, has .5,000
hives. Individually, the bees are
short lived because they have to work
the year round.
A contrivance for sharpening
mower and reaper knives has been in
vented. It does away with the evils
and annoyances of the old system of
keeping knives in order, lessens the
labor, and preserves a perfect cutting
edge. Several prominent agricultu
rists have thoroughly tested the ma
chine during the past season, and
speak highly of its tfiiciency.
Southern Russia is reported to
have harvested unusually large crops,
and Hungary has never been so
bountifully favored. In Turkey the
crops of cereals have been good. But
in Belgium, Spain, and Poland the
supply is exceedingly light. In Eng
land the harvest has been
jrood.
France has less than an average
crop.
Like a young man putting on his
hest clothes before getting married,
the Canadians are doing the best they
can. They show some important in
ventions. One is a family spinning
machine, running 12 threads by turn
ing a crank. Another is a fh.pulU
ing machine, which is cheap and sitn
pie and docs not leave a stalk be
hind. Few know it; hut it is as true
as preaching, that our nation is to be
saved by flax.
To those who have given some
thought and attention to these mat
ters it is painfully apparent that the
great need of our agricultural popu
lation is Education. Agricultural
engineers are wanted to teach farm
ers how to reclaim useless marshes
and waste places; how to make the
soil sweet and productive; how to
grow the largest and best crops.
Thousands of acres lie waste in New
England which might be reclamed ;
lens.of thousands are in the same con
dition in this and the adjoining States,
and hundreds of acres of land within
two miles of the proud Empire city
are allowed to remain in a wild, sour,
useless condition, as they have been
siace the world was created, all for
the want of a little engineering skill.
