MONDAY to your calling go ; Serve ffie Lord ; love friend and foe ; To the Tempter, answer No. O TUESDAY do what good you can ; Live in peace with God and man ; Remember life is but a span ! WEDNESDAY give away and earn ; Teach some truth, some thing learn ; Joyful good or ill return. THURSDAY build your house upon Christ, the mighty corner-stone, Whom God helps, his work is done. FRIDAY for thcruth is strong ; Own your fault if in the wrong ; Tut a bridle on your tougue. SATURDAY thank God and sing Tribute to His treasure bring ; Be prepared for Terror's king. LITTLE TIIIXGSS. The flower is small that docks the field, The bee is small that bends the flower ; But flower and bee alike may yield Food for a thoughtful hour. o Essence and attributes of each For ends profound combine ; And all they are, and all they teach, Springs from the mind divine. Is there one scorneth little things? A31 wisely might he scorn to eat The food that bounteous autumn brings In little grains of wheat. Methinks, indeed, that such a one o Few pleasures upon earth will find, Where well-nigh every good is one From little things combined. The lark that in the morning air Amid the sunbeams mounts and sings ; What lifted her so lightly there ? Small feathers in her wings. What form the beauteous, gorgeous dyes (With which all nature oft is bright? Meadows and streams, woods, hills and skies. Minutest waves of light. And when thcPeartlPis sere and sad From summer's over-fervid reign, linn.- ia (dip in frfli lifiitv o:t ? By little drops of vain. Gi'ea, and the robe that ifatu re weaves, Whence does it every robe surpass ! From little flowers, and little leaves, And little blades of grass. O sure, who scorneth little tfnngs, If he were not a thoughtless elf, Far above all that round him springs. Would scorn his little self. Miscellaneous Items. . 0 A dangerous character: the man who take3 life cheerfully. At what time should an inn-keeper vis- it an iron foundry? When lie wants a bar maid. Young men who go to balls would do well to remember that a ball should nev er close with a red. Why is a mad bull an animal of convi vial disposition? Because he offers a horn to every one he meets. Charity it is said, covereth a multi tude of sins. A great many never put on this Covering but let the sins go bare. Wood, along the Tacific Railroad, sells at from twenty-five to a hundred dollars per cord. What reason have we to Relieve that Noah brewed beer in the ark? Because a kangaroo was seen going on board with hops. Dr. Jackson used to say that houses should be built to eat and sleep in, but not to live in. To live at all one must live out of doors. Here is alucid sentence from Miss Evans' Macaria: "Perish the microcosm in the limitless macrcosm, and sink the feeble earthly aggregate in the boundless, rush ing, choral aggregation."' What perils ladies will cncoimter to he in the fashion ! They are generally sup posed to show timidity in the presence of wild cattle, but they would rather face a mad bull than not have dresses gored. Mrs. Jessie Benton Fremont is engaged, it is said, upon some literary work, the character of which has not been made public. Earl CP. Mason, f Providence, R. I., presented to his daughter on the day of her nuptials, $100,000. and to his son-in law $25,000. to pay the expenses of a two years' tour in Europe. Jerome lost twenty thousand dollars on the race of " Kentucky" against time John Hunter won five thousand dollars And one hundred and fiftv thousand dol lars changed hands on Wall street. A French writer thus describes a fellow- laborer in the cause of liteature: "With hi sunken eyes and projecting nose he resem bles a crow, but when he looks at himself in a mirror he resembles an eagle.' A minister having preached the same discourse to his people three times, one - v i . - i -i, , vi uis cuusumi uearers sam to mm alter a service, " Doctor, the sermon you gave this morning had three several readings : I move that it now be passed." A Frenchman has recently said of his countrywomen : "In France, a woman is a man, but passing through the alembic, refined and concentrated, with all the ini tiative of a man, his military vivacity, his love of society, his passion for show and amusement, site is nevertheless a woman. An affectionate but playful wife in Springfield. Mass., sent a note to her hus band, recently, written in a disguised hand, signed with a fictitious name, stat ing that she had often seen and admired him, and if he would inform her of a place of meeting she would become better ac quainted. Husband answered note at once, appointing time and place of meet ing. Both parties met at the appointed time and place, the lady heavily veiled, and proceeded to the rooms, where the veil was removed, and a grand tableaux not set down in the bills ensued. Assu rance made on the part of the husband that it was nothing but a joke, and that he knew it was her all the time wife is hav ing a stylish bonnet, new cloak, and ele , gant silk dress made. Henry Ward Beecher has his paper manufactured expressly, the ruling being far enough apart to admit of legible inter lining. The name of James Gorden Bennett has reappeared in the New York Herald without that of J. B., Jr. Thus gossip is again baffled. E. F. Leap Year. The pleasures of leap year are thus noticed by a Jacksonville paper: We had the pleasure one day this week, ere the twilight shades had fallen, of observing two young ladies, handsomely ap parreled, doing the gallant, by escorting two handsome ditto, haudsomely ditto, to the meeting place ot the glee club. Oh, these Leap Year privileges ! Those pleasure are only excelled by a call at Kohn & Fishel's, No. il. Front street, Portland, Oregon. Where all that is requisite to the handsome apparel referred to, tor either sex, may be seen, and appreciated, when prices are given sit which the gentlemanly proprietors dis pose of them. The Nomination. There are to be selected, by the Conventions meeting at Portland next month, by each party respect ively officers as follows : One Congressman ; a Judge of this the fourth Judicial District ; and a Prosecuting Attorney . Six delegates to the National Convention ; and three can didates for electors of President and Vice President, to be supponed at the next No vember election. These gentlemen may possibly not ail be elected, indeed but half of those required by the laws of the land will be, but that need not make any ditl'er ance with Barman Uros., they will keep on in the even tenor of their way, and sell to all, irrespective of party, the best goods in the market, at the lowest prices. He says, " I have retailed nearly four dozen bottles over my counter, and it has given srood satisfaction." " Many letters like the above arc daily re ceived from all parts of the country. The demand for it from California is large for medicine so recently ottered for sale. Perry Davis & Son's "Pain Killer,' may most justly be styled the great medi cine of the world, for there is no resrion o the globe into which it has not found its waj", and none where it has not long been largely used and lustily prized. .Moreover, there is no clime to which it has not prove to be well adapted for the cure of sl consid erable variety of diseases; it is a speedy and sate remedy tor burns, scalds, cuts, bruises wounds and various other injuries, as well as for dysentery, dianheea, and bowel com rdaints cenerailv. it is admirably suited fo every race of men on the face of the globe It is very siyrmncant tact, that notwith standing the long period of years that the "Pain Killer has been before the woild it has never lost one whit of its popularity or siiowD me leasi S'.siu oi ueuoiiiins mi popular; but, on the contrary, the call for i has steadily increased from its first discove ry by that excellent and honored man Perry Davis, and at no previous time has the demand for it been so great, or the quantity made been so large, as it is this day Another significant fact is, that nowhere has the Pain Killer ever been in burlier re pute, or been more generally use by familie and individuals, thtin it has been here at home where it was first discovered and in troduced, and where its proprietors, Messrs, l'er-y Davis & Son, nave ever oecn neia high esteem. That the Pain Killer will con tinue to be, what we have strled it, 'j cat mtdicine of the icorll, there cannot be the shadow of a doubt. 1'rovtdtnce Adver tise. flo.5 JOHN H.
