The Star of Tempep.axCE. We
acknowledge the receipt of thisMSS.
paper published at Milwaukee on the
8th, by the Order of Good Templars.
The Star contains many words of
cheer on every page, and besides be
ing conducted for the furtherance of
the one grand object, is locally inter
esting. From it we learn that Hon,
W. C. Johnson will deliver a temper
ancc lecture at Milwaukie, about the
BOth; that a new lodge of Temp
lars is to be instituted at Rock Creek;
that the good people of Milwaukie
ronld oginize a Grant Club on the
"evening of the 13th. Judge Smith
iind others were expected to be pres
ent, and address the meeting. The
iSlar does not wish to mingle or dab
Qble in politics. Th's is right there
are altogether to many politicians in
the country now. The Legislature
it still in session. The subject of
" universal suffrage'' was made the
special order for the 11th. The la
dies of the place appear to take great
interest in the proceedings. The
Star speaks a good word for the En
terprise, for which the Editor and
Editress, will accept ocr thanks and
be assured that we shall at least en
deavor to be deserving of all that
has been said. We shall be more
than pleased to send the Exterprisk
in exchange for the Star.
Apologetic. Bro. Mason requests

"Ghost Stories-." The leaders
produced bjoBeriah for the Herald,
while he is in the act of writing them,
reminds one of ghost stories. A
friend stood gazing at " the Editor,"'
"and s hile prospecting thai pece

what a pity it was to deprive the
grave of such a beautiful corpse."
The remains of Mr. Welth,
murdered by highwaymen, on the
route from Lemhi to Boise City late

a few days since. This is a fearful
blow to his aged mother, who so re
cently lost her husband and daughter
by diownfng.
TitK Lectures The lecture of
Mr. Mason, on Tuesday evening, was
attentively listend to, and proved a
credit to its author. We bespeak a

Ireland's Fhepom. Rev. C. Rosa
who has just established himself here

of GOO boxes of fruit shipped by our
friend C. Barhhart, of Buttevilie, for

him a mere pittance for his trouble,
etc, The transaction is only like
thousands of others. We quote from
the Unionist;
To the TTntoxist : I send you the en

considerable information interesting to

E. Si O. E. Allkn- & Lewis,
per l'alache;
The foregoing will require some explan
ation : The first charge of $37 25 ; for
drayage in Portland, $11 2C, and $43 for
freight ; that is three dollars for every
twenty boxes, or ton, as they are called,
each containing, as is said, forty pounds.
The running time of steamboats from
Butctitle to Portland is something like
three hours ; so the charge is only one
dollar au hour on each ton quite reason
able and not by any means and exhoi bi
tant; but it so happens that teamsters
were such fools, before the rains com
menced, as to team such tons for two
dollars, eighteen miles by land, to Port
land. The charge of $S7 17 is for freight from
Portland to San Francisco ; that Is six
dollars a ton for each twenty boxes ; say
$00 and the $7 17 is from primage or pil
ferage, or something of that sort. There
was 300 boxes, but only one was eatea up
on the river boats, for which I am very
thankful. Now, the apples sold well
over two cents a pound how much do I
get? less than three-fourths of a cent!

Frozen Potatoes. There is a prospect
that fruit and potatoes will command high
prices in the spring and summer, owing
to the great quantity that has been frozen.
In this county, in many instances Hint we
hear of, $1 tH) per bushel now will not pay
the farmer so well as 40 cents would have
done before the freeze up.

that the people of Portland have any guar

part of it, even now. Again, we doubt
the right of th city to take such action.
Tiik Congressman. We believe that the
next Congressman for Oregon should come
from east of the Cascade mountains. The
people there are entitled to this favor.
And in this connection we would suggest
the name of A. B. Meacham. as a suitable.

man for the position.

Dr. IIostetter's Stomach Bit
f ers. The operation of this palatable rem
edy upon the stomach, liver and excretory
organs is singularly soothing and conserva
tive. It regulates, recruits, and purifies
them. Dyspepsia in all its forms yields to
its conthol and invigorating properties, and
it is recommended to mothers, enfeebled by
the cares and duties of maternity, as the
safest and best remedy they can probably
use. In all the crisis of female life it will be
found eminently useful, and elderly persons
will derive much more benefit from it than
from ordinary stimulants. Sold by the drug
gists and dealers everywhere.

TOTHIXO THAT IS NOT VHOLE
1 tome, genial, and restorative in its na

TETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS... This
popular preparation contains no mineral of
any kind ; no deadly botanical element; no

extracts of rare balsamic herbs aud plants,
with the purest aud mildest of all diffusive
stimulants.
The week stomach is rapidly invigorated,
and the appetite restored by this tonic, and
hence it woi Ks wonders in cases of Dyspepsia,
and in less confirmed forms of Indigestion.
Acting as a gentle and pajnless iprient.. as
well as upon tbe liver, it also invariably re
