Those who have failed to fcet the paper while we were running on a nhort allowance, will receive additional num bers sufficient to make up for the loss. The Star of Tempep.axCE. We acknowledge the receipt of thisMSS. paper published at Milwaukee on the 8th, by the Order of Good Templars. The Star contains many words of cheer on every page, and besides be ing conducted for the furtherance of the one grand object, is locally inter esting. From it we learn that Hon, W. C. Johnson will deliver a temper ancc lecture at Milwaukie, about the BOth; that a new lodge of Temp lars is to be instituted at Rock Creek; that the good people of Milwaukie ronld oginize a Grant Club on the "evening of the 13th. Judge Smith iind others were expected to be pres ent, and address the meeting. The iSlar does not wish to mingle or dab Qble in politics. Th's is right there are altogether to many politicians in the country now. The Legislature it still in session. The subject of " universal suffrage'' was made the special order for the 11th. The la dies of the place appear to take great interest in the proceedings. The Star speaks a good word for the En terprise, for which the Editor and Editress, will accept ocr thanks and be assured that we shall at least en deavor to be deserving of all that has been said. We shall be more than pleased to send the Exterprisk in exchange for the Star. Apologetic. Bro. Mason requests s to say that he owes the people of Oregon City an apology, for the ' manner " in which his lecture " The Inhabitants of Distant Worlds," was delivered on Tuesday evening last Jt was not as satisfactory to him as could have wished -but he desires the public to understand that Cok White, and ret he, Tras fa blame. The fact was, tha, the Colonel fed him so Tell at the Cliff House, that he was " to full for utterance." Furuc Speakivo We are re quested to state that Hons. Xj. F. Grover and Geo. K. Sheil, of Salem, will address the Democratic Club of this 'county nt the Court House in this city the former on Saturday 225, itvst., at one o'clock v. jr. and jjie latter -on Saturday 29th, inst.-, at seven o'clock p. m. O Pki.ecatzs. The Highland Base Ball Club of this city, met t n the evening of the 13th, as we are in formed by a note, from Mr. T. J. Spooner Secretary, and elected Messrs. J. M. Bacon and Charles Warren delegates to attend the Base O Bill Convention at Portland On the 21st inst. "Ghost Stories-." The leaders produced bjoBeriah for the Herald, while he is in the act of writing them, reminds one of ghost stories. A friend stood gazing at " the Editor,"' "and s hile prospecting thai pece of human clay,'' he writes " I felt what a pity it was to deprive the grave of such a beautiful corpse." The remains of Mr. Welth, murdered by highwaymen, on the route from Lemhi to Boise City late ly, reached his friends in this county a few days since. This is a fearful blow to his aged mother, who so re cently lost her husband and daughter by diownfng. TitK Lectures The lecture of Mr. Mason, on Tuesday evening, was attentively listend to, and proved a credit to its author. We bespeak a Ofull house for llev. Mr. Elliot on Tuesday evening neit. Ireland's Fhepom. Rev. C. Rosa who has just established himself here in a private school, will deliver a leeturg this evening at the Court House, upon the above named sub ject. Coxoressiosal. A bill was intro duced in the Senate on the 12th, de ciding that Alabama be restored to the right of representation in Con gress. The Committee on Territories reported a bill for the admission of Colorado ou the 12th. Rev. N. Doanc will preach at the M. E. Church to-morrow, morninc and evening, at' the usual hours. One week from to day QuarterlysMeetlng services will commence, at the same church, conducted by Kev. J. F. De Vure. IU'kmso Again. The Lumbering Company at Canemah commenced operations again on Monday of this 5ek after fitting Up, and are now running regularly. Bad Arrangement. We learn O that sheep are flying by the hnndred ID Linn, id counties south, on ac count cf the deep snow, arrd lack of proper care. fr- III. Judge J. D. Locey we re gret to say, is lying dangerously at the residence of his brother id Ca-acrnah. "A Big Thing in Apples." Out of GOO boxes of fruit shipped by our friend C. Barhhart, of Buttevilie, for i the San Francisco market, over three fourths went to pay charges, leaving him a mere pittance for his trouble, etc, The transaction is only like thousands of others. We quote from the Unionist; To the TTntoxist : I send you the en closed bill, supposing that it will afford considerable information interesting to farmers who have apples to ship to San Francisco. It runs thus: Portland, Ogk., Dec. 27, 1S67. To Mr. Sale s by Allen fc Lewis of 293 Boxes Apples. : Str. - Oriflamme." For acct. of Mr. C. ex liarnhart. Dec. 27, 299 Bxs of .Apples, S3. ?254 15 i'hgr. tct Portland ?."7 2" Fi eight j7 17 per ct. com 12 70 "!C9 12- 'ett proceeds. fc5 03 San Francisco, Dec. 27,1807. E. Si O. E. Allkn- & Lewis, per l'alache; The foregoing will require some explan ation : The first charge of $37 25 ; for drayage in Portland, $11 2C, and $43 for freight ; that is three dollars for every twenty boxes, or ton, as they are called, each containing, as is said, forty pounds. The running time of steamboats from Butctitle to Portland is something like three hours ; so the charge is only one dollar au hour on each ton quite reason able and not by any means and exhoi bi tant; but it so happens that teamsters were such fools, before the rains com menced, as to team such tons for two dollars, eighteen miles by land, to Port land. The charge of $S7 17 is for freight from Portland to San Francisco ; that Is six dollars a ton for each twenty boxes ; say $00 and the $7 17 is from primage or pil ferage, or something of that sort. There was 300 boxes, but only one was eatea up on the river boats, for which I am very thankful. Now, the apples sold well over two cents a pound how much do I get? less than three-fourths of a cent! Y. Z. Precaution.- A man in Cleve land, who was badly frightened over recent mail robberies, addeJ to the address of the letter, " For God's sake, let this go through; there is no money ill" But there is mnnrv in that kind of precaution which prompts ., i., t "t , - i . , . , . io uuy 01 jvonn .t jrisnei, -o Front street, Portland, Oregon. 91 Confidence. It has been stated by those who are supposed to know that in maniej life perfect and entire confidence is the great cause of happiness, and that with out these it will not exist. Had it not have been for the confidence- the public have m Barman Bros., that firm could never have prepared to extensively as it is, for the com ing spring and summer trade. Washington's Birth Day Ball. We learn that it is the intention of Col. White to give a grand ball on the evening of the 21st, at the Cliff House. TJ. Taken in the sportive sense B. B. in Oregon means Base Ball ; taken in the noble sense we can apply it to a char itable institution at Portland ; taken ig nobly -ye should ray St belonged to the name- of Be nub. Brown. From last week half sheet. Frozen Potatoes. There is a prospect that fruit and potatoes will command high prices in the spring and summer, owing to the great quantity that has been frozen. In this county, in many instances Hint we hear of, $1 tH) per bushel now will not pay the farmer so well as 40 cents would have done before the freeze up. Postmaster Kelly hats handed us a letter from S. P. "Werner, Wapello, Luisa comity Jov.-a ; asking for information con cerning Andrew Werner. Any person knowing where he may be found will con fer a favor by ftddivssitig S. 1'. Werner as above. Rebecca Davidson, of Carthage. Jasper Co., Missouri, says She is comparatively homeless and friendless, and is very anx ious to hear frOm her two sons Samuel Davidson and Elijah II. Davidson, who. when last heard lrom, lived near Oregon Citv. Passkh. The ordinance appropriating interest for 20 years, on the sum of 230.000 dollars stock, to be issued !5y tho Yarn hill w ing of the Oregon Central Railroad Com pany, passed the council of Portland on Wednesday evening. We are not sure that the people of Portland have any guar antee that the road will be built, or any part of it, even now. Again, we doubt the right of th city to take such action. Tiik Congressman. We believe that the next Congressman for Oregon should come from east of the Cascade mountains. The people there are entitled to this favor. And in this connection we would suggest the name of A. B. Meacham. as a suitable. and lit the same time the most acceptable, man for the position. e-'iL'-i..' , l l' -g If jou wish the very besc Cabinkt Photo cr.Arns, you mut call bn Bkaiii.lt & It clop son, 429 .Montgomery street, San Francisco. The operation of this palatable rem edy upon the stomach, liver and excretory organs is singularly soothing and conserva tive. It regulates, recruits, and purifies them. Dyspepsia in all its forms yields to its conthol and invigorating properties, and it is recommended to mothers, enfeebled by the cares and duties of maternity, as the safest and best remedy they can probably use. In all the crisis of female life it will be found eminently useful, and elderly persons will derive much more benefit from it than from ordinary stimulants.
