TnE I-'iitKZE. At present writing the
riVtr is open, and transit is easy from the
metropolis to the capital, but this is alto
gether owing to the perseverance of tbe
1. T. Co., ad the w eather continues unfav
orable for a thaw decidedly. It was just
wo weeks, to an hour, frora the time the
fkrtator left her dock in tbis city on the 1 1th
until -.he Alert sounded her whistle wi;h
in hearing of our office, on her return on
the 25th. Upon reaching the gorge near
the warehouse Capt. Cau'gha;an nearly
found his match, but by cutting with axes,
prying with levers, anchoring and tugging
t the mass, finally gained the mastery ,and
made the wharf on Sunday. This river is
very clear, and cold but is slightly rising.
The Columbia is still impassable, and will
tio doubt continue so uutil a change of the
ah mKn ; or the weather. Probably
the Utter. However, all signs fail iu dry
timed like this.
Fostat. Matters. corr.e time last fall
Hon. V. C. Johnson forwarded to Senator
Corbett a memorial of the citizens of our
county living iu the vicinity of Howard's
mills, asking for the establishment of an
office there. P.y the last steamer. Mr. John

Corbett, enclosing a letter from the Post
office department, declining to establish
Ihe oflice, for the reason that the route from
thi place to Lebanon had not been let.
The papers have been forwarded to Postal
.Agent Drooka. Wc hope our friends at
Howard's mills may be accommodated in
orne wav.

It contains valuable statistical information,

P::o on Cox A petition for a reduction
of toll on the Portland Ferry boat, will
be presented to the board of commission
ers in Multnomah county next week. Tie
petitioners attach a statement of the reve
nue officers, to show the large income de
rived from-the concern, from which we
are informed that in August last the receipts
in greenbacks were $l,0:il ; in September,
$99 i ; and in October SL58C. These were
the most active times. The Herald does
not wish to be understood "as favoring or
opposing a reduction." "We should think
a tine chance was presented in this case
for opposing a reduction. The receipts
are but little more than sufficient to pav
hire f.nd oil let alone interest, wear and
tear and other incidentals.
Canadians on Emigration. The
Canadian people express regret at finding
emigration to the United States still contin
ues, and that not only young men go to find
new homes, but heads of famiiics" go and
take their families with them. The ' United
States will heartily welcome all immigrants
who come withm her borders. Those com
ing to Oregon especially the male part, read
ily find homes, and as to clothing, when
they want any of that, they do as most of
those who have come here before them
seek Barmun lrcs., where they ulwavs get
the best barguins, and finest stvles.
Expenses cf Living. Tha New
York Herald states that a comparative state
ment cf the prices in New York, Philadel
phia, Paris, London, Dei lin, and other prom
inent cities of all parts of the world, shows
that New Voi k is the most expensive on the
globe, in the matter of food'. As regards
clothing, I;u!rs' dress goods, gents' furnish
ing goods, etc, it is believed that Kohn &
Fishel, No. il Front street, Portland, sell
cheaper than any other firm in Oregon.
Family Dvs Colors. The most
useful and welcome articles to be found in
almost every household in the land, arc the
Family Dye Colors of Howe A Stevens.
They can always be relied upon, are easily
used, and cost but a trifle.

The Great Medicine of the
world. Ferry Davis & Sou's " Pain Killer,"
may most justly be styled the great medi
cine of the. world, for there is no region of
the globe into which it has not found its
way, and none where, it has not lon been
largely used and highly prized. Moreover,
there is no clime to which it has not proved
to be well adapted for the cure or a consid
erable variety of diseases; it is a speedy aud
safe remedy for burns, scalds, cuts, bruises,
wounds and various other injuries, as we!!
us lOr dysentery, diarihoja, and bowel com
plaints jreneraily, it is admirably suiied for
every race of men on the face of the globe.
It is very significant fact, that notwith
standing the long period of years that the
"Pain Killer" has been before the world,
it has never lost one whit of its popularity
or showu the least sign of beeomuig un
popular; but, on the contrary, the calf for it
has steadily increased from its first discove
ry by that excellent aud honored man.
Perry Davis, and at no rroviom time has
the diniaud for it been so grs-jit, or the
quantity made been so larg", as it is this day.
Another signHieant fact is, that nowhere
has the Pain Killer ever been in higher re
pufe, or been more generally use by families
and individuals, than it has been" here at
home where it was first discovered and in-!
trodaeed, and where its proprietors, Messrs.
Perry Davis A Son, have ev";-r been held in
high'esteeai. That the Pain Killer will con
tinue to !.., whiit we have styled it, the
