Interesting Pec'tciies. Persons who
fail to attend the Lectures being given in
this city the present season for the benefit
of the building fund of Oregon Lodge No.
S, I. 0. O. P.. are losing something they
mar possibly never be able to obtain
again for the price. We cannot even give
nfaint outline of these lectures, to make
the subjects intelligible to our readers.
"VVe were deeply interested for three
quarters of An hour on Tuesday evening
in listening to the lecture of Hon. J.N.
Polph "The Shores of the Mediterran
ean." This subject covers so much tune,
includes so manv nations, and is the his
tory of so many great deeds and great
meh, that the Lecturer himfelf admitted
that a single lecturer would not permit
him to give a historical account of any of
the nations that have dwelt there, or of the
great men who have appeared there upon
the stage of action as warriors or states
men, philosophers or pages, poets or ar
tists, nor was this his design. He took a
hasty glance, however, of the principal
empires which have been wrested from
oblivion by the history of the middle
ages, and treated the subject quite plainly,
tending to show in conclusion, by the ex
ample of America, that if it be true that
Westward the .Star of Empire, take.3 its
way. may it not be that civilization having
made the circuit of the globe, will re
turn to the place of beginning, suid
l'htf nix-like upon those shores shall rise,
from the wrecks of the glorious past, all
Its magnificence and splendor.

rived at Canemah from Corvallis and in
termediate ports, in spite of ice and cold
weather. Capt. Miller made more success

tions anywhere. On .Saturday last he
turned his steamers prow upward and

Upton, of Portland, will be here, and give

no doubt attach to this lecture'. Prof. S.
C.Simpson of t a'ern. will follow Mr. Upton
on Tuesday evening February 4th with a
lecture upon the subject of Coxtknt
mkxt." Thus the programme is laid out,
without, we hope, any further disappoint
ments to the end. The stopping of com
munication was entirely uuhjoked for, and
the delays have been unavoidable, but we
can assure the public that the Committee
will do all that is in their power to render
the course acceptable. The lectures al
ready delivered have been qui e interest
ing, and the interest in no case on that
point will Hag, as one may see by glanc
ing at the names, on the list of lecturers
yet to come. lr. Wythe will be here at
some time not get definitely decided upon.
O. P. Mason Esq.. will come on the 11th.
and the Committee are now arranging for
the 10th, or final lecture, made vacant and
to be supplied by the departure of Gov
ernor Woods for "the East.
Is it Fair. Whenever anything pro
duced in Oregon has been shown ns, we
have taken pains to speak of it in terms
commensurate with its value. In doing
thti3 we have no doubt lost many dollars
worth of patronage, because an article
thus noticed a few times, generally does
not require to be advertised. In'rnaking
such notices, both here, and while acting
as reporter for the leiding duly of Port
1 ind, the matter of patronage never once
entered our mind. We worked as we in
tend to continue working for the good of
fie .State at large. If Oregon should
prosper we knew very well wo should
prcsper in exact proportion to the stand
ing we hold in community. This we think
should be the motive of our people to a
greater extent than it is.

forms us that it is his intention to take the
Levriston out on a free excursion, to the
people of Ciuicmah and Oregon City, by
Wednesday morning next, at 8 o'clock.

working hard to open up the river be
tween this city and Portland, ns we go to
press. Mr. Pratt left here on skates or
rather with skates on his shoulder? in
tending to make a trip to Portland, and
ascertain what would be done. The Hrr
aUl of yesterday said it was the intention
of the Company to cut away the ice and
open a channel, provided there is not an
immediate chancre, of weather and a
'break up." This morning one of the
up-river ste alers leaves for Salem, one
for Corvallis, and one i or Day ton.

Pacific Coast, has issued a new publication

Hook of Facts." We have been promised
a squint at its pages when it conies we

blunder when it stated that Pro. Polph
visited ns on Tusday last on foot from
Portland, lie came astride of a mule, al
most as good as the one which the Demo
cratic party saddled him with in a lute
