1 r "o O t. o D O Eljc iUccklij Enterprise. TOWJI AND 'COUNTY. C . : u: . The Opposition. On last Sunday ,SfcniiderabIe excitement was awaken ed in this city bf the launch of the Ltwitton, in the P. T. Company's batin, nnd tho efforts of the two par. ticsthe " opposition" to take her on ' cp to Canemah, and the " regular line" to throw obstacles in the way." We have nothing but the kindest of feeling for the P. T. Co , and its f fl eers nnd member?, but we do say that their conduct toward the Lewis ' ton has not been according to the Golden Rule given us by the ancient classic. God made the Willamette, $obabIy, free lor all who may be abla to navig;;te it, and with the Lewiston these men propose to earn their bread. It is their right; and we will not say that it is not ;lso the riyht of the P. T. C, to prevent them from using the improvements, of the Company, to further their designs, bat many men think there was most too much ado about nothing. When the Tualatin Fur Company embarked h&e lately they did so with their kiaT launched in the basin, and there wm nothing said. Tho difference we . sec between iw tvvo is slight one rei?el has a wheel and is propelled by steam, the other only goes by oars rid muscle. One company had $25 capital, the other $23,000 we be licre the P. T. Company claim the right to $2,000,000. The discharg ing of certain gentlemen, fur what they did on Sunday, was certainly very small indeed. What if one of tho P. T. Companies boats was to el afoul of i snag or rock, nnd the farm hands of some firmer who wns opposed to the Company, having nothing else to do was to give the hands on that boat a lift, and then re ef ire their discharge in in id winter, when work was not to be had? Would it rfot be small in that arro gant, selfish man, to do so? What tUe can any one think of the P. T. Company, in like ease as thi? It has bren aid that certain members of the 1. T. Company had an interest in the opposition. Wre do not know (hat this report is true, but it has been stated to in a fact. Whether it be true or not, the Lewiou is now here, h iving traveled all the dangers of tho Sntike, Columbia, and Willamette rivers, (rom Lewiston, Idaho, to Ca nemnh, making the most remarka- ble steamboat trip perhaps, on record nnywhere, in any country, and now that sre is here, we heartily wish her abundant success. Odd Feli.oavu Lectures. The de parture of Gov. Woods for the East last steamer maks it certain that he will not be able to deliver the lec ture in the Odd Fellows course, at this city on the 28th, and, beingdisap pointed in the time of departure from Portland, on Tuesday last, Ex-(ot. Gibbs will take the place made va cant by Gov. Woods. His lecture will be upon " 1 Jail roads." On Tuesday evening next lie-v. Dr. Wythe, of S.tlem, will lecture, on the subject 'of " Labor.'' Dr. Wythe is ft very able man. His lectures at Salem, tipoij " Pilgrims Progress," are highly spoken of. The Unionist Buys that Dr. Wythe is universally regarded as one of the ablest and most scholarly members of the Mo.lh odist Conference. He was sent here by the Bishop on account of his con spicuous abilities and scholastic nc rompIihmeuts, which were expected to assist greatly in the advancement of Willamette University. Like the Catholic, the polity of the Methodist church is to pljiee stronj; men where thpy will havearduous labor. Katiikisa. We have been partic n'urly interested in I);-. Holland's new poem, " Kalhr in.),'' as our read F ers undoubtedly have observed by our extensive quotations from it. 0 Parts of it will bear rehearsal every day before family prayers. The book seems to hnve taken woll every where 23,000 copies were sold, we are informed by the publishers, Messrs. Charles Setibner & Co., (534 Broadway, N. Y., in little more than one month after Us first appearance. Dr. Holland, u Timothy Titcoml,'' was the author of the popular poem, "Bitter Sweet" which, taken with -Kathrina'' make two of the best ever published in America. One Vol. 12 no, about SOt) pages Price $1 50. full gilt $2 30 each. Sawing Match. On Thursday last two mechanics of this city, Mr. A. 1. DeLin, and Mr. Geo. Mayer, sawed a match with bow saws which caused some remark. The match was to saw a three foot line, of x oak stuff. Both started at the word, and worked hard for the cham pionship. Mr. DeLin came out in two minutes and four seconds, leav ing his competitor with three inches .itid three-sixteenths to saw. It is justice to add .that Mr. Mayer, works oak much of his time, while it has been n long time since Mr. DeLin worked in that class of timber. Mr. Mayer is a wagon maker by trade, Mr.'DcLiu a cubiuct ui.kei.- Winter For somo days "past, since Sunday, we have er.joyed ice hugely in these parts. " A big thing on ice" is no comparison to what may be seen in Oregon on such oc casions. The Portland papers say that all the world "and his wife" there, went in for skates. Here it was every body and his sister. Youth and beanty used to meet in the ball room, but now they meet on ice, and ain't it nice! Some chronic grumblers find' fault about our winters. We wish they might be froze in at St. Paul, or some other northern Missis sippi town, once, where no descrip tion can give an idea of the inter.se rigor of -the six months winter they have. Spitzbergen ' Is not a patch in." Stones cr-tek with the noise of thunder, in a crowded hut the breath of the occupants will fall in flakes of snow, wine and spirits turn to ice, the snow burns like caustic; ii iron touches the kin, it brings the flesh away with it ; the soles of your stock ings may be burned off your feet be f re you feci the slightest warmth from the fire; linen taken out of boil ing water instantly stiffens to the consistency of a wooden board, and heated stones will not prevent the sheets of the bed from freezing. We have no idea of ever moving bad there, " von bet !'' Countv Court. TheCouuty Court. Judge Matlock Presiding, met on Monday last and continued in session for several days, transacting the usual amount of business. In re sponse to a numerously signed peti tion, the P. T. "VTOTniNG THAT 13 NOT WIIOLE L some, genial, and restorative in its na ture, enters into the composition of HOS TETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. This popular preparation contains no mineral of any kind ; no deadly botanical element; no fiery excitant ; but is u combination of the extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants, xvith the purest aud mildest of all diffusive stimulants. The xveek stomach is rapidly invigorated, aud the appetite restored by this tonic, and hence it works wonders in cases of Dvspepaia, and in less confirmed forms of Indigestion. Acting as a gentle and painless aprient. x well as upon the liver, it also invariably re lieves the Constipation superinduced by ir regular action of the digestive aud secretive organs.
