o 2 o o s S 3 o 0 5 Q O o if 0 ' 0 O El)ifUccklii (Enterprise. TOWS AND COUNTY.' ' The Melodies of Mother Goose." When Rev. P. S. Knight announced the subject of the lecture as above given in this city on Mon day evening last for the benefit of the building fund of Oregon Lodge So. 3 we werPat n loss to conjecture the train he would be likely to follow, but trusted to his own good judgment for the solution, hence when the eve ning came, and with it the lecture, we wereratified at hearing a most excellent discourse. The speaker said, at the outset, that when he agreed to deliver this lecture he re golfed to do it with just as little work O as possible, and began to look about liiru for a subject he asked himself "stall I take philosophy?" " No, because I am not a philosopher." 'or history because he was no histo rian, nor politics because he was no politician considering thn that he must be one of the poets " simple fAcc of men." he took criticism, and in this sought for the lowest round in the ladder, and selected the subject named, which he treated in a manner highly satisfactory to the large au dience of ladies and gentleman who had assembled to greet Him. " Moth er Goose" is a simple story-book, in rhymes, composed to amuse children, but Mr. Knight placed it alongside of the works oftShakespeare, and oth er celebrated authors " in the brave days of old" showing that the object for which it was written had been accomplished and, holding that as Shakespeare wrote to amusj grown up children, and Mother Goose to amuse those who were not grown up he was " willing both should live as long as men and children live, and O go down through the ages side by side, toilers in the same field." His illustrations of the Grammar of other authors when compared with Mother Goose; as also, his general defence of the work, showed h"i3 partiality to it, which was finally rounded off at the close by a generous appeal to parents for sympathy for the. children. He dealt kindly with the subject, and while he did not " lay bare its bones" ror " tear apart its muscles" fts sured his audience that there was more real pleasure in only touching the surface " picking off a few feath era," then in searching for tho bare bones of luckless authors. It is useless to saythat none were benefit ed by attendance at this lecture. All who were present, we feel certain, will testify that the first lecture of tho course was a decided success. Tho second lecture will be given on Tuesday evening next, at 7 o'clock, at the Court House, bv Rev. C. C. Stratton of Portland, upon the sub ject of " Eye to Eye." We hope and trust that tho interest manifested 6ri last Monday evening will increase as tho times for the lectures approach. q Tho object is a most worthy one, and no more profitable way can be devised in which to spend an evening. At tho Council meeting on Monday evening last nothing definite was done with regard to the water works. We propose giving a his tory of water works in Oregon City soon, which if not quite so ancient as the history of the dam spoken of by O BiHv Shakespeare, will no doubt be fully as interesting, Since the departure or Mr. J". 1 Wortley from the Oregon City Wool en Mills, Messrs. Jacobs take charge of the Superintendency, and with the assistance of their skilled boss work men, as well as other experienced hands in the mill, are now turning out better goods than was ever turn ed out before, which will stand equal with any made on the coast. Our attention has been called to some nice cassamiers and beavers which are now being turned out, which are superior to any article ever heretofore produced iu Oregon. &; L-n route to their future homes on Monday's boat, came 21 families who left the cold and forbidding re gions of Minnesota and Wisconsin, last May, for Oregon. "Ve welcome all such, and hope our people will be generous toward them. The best furniture in Oregon is that made by Levy & Co., of this city. Anything from a fine parlor set, to a common bed room set, can be had on short notice. The work will bear inspection. If you want any wagon lumber or carriage material, such as Hubs, Spokes, Felloes, etc. You can find thfih at the stores of Robt. IT. Law, r E. J. Xcrthrup, advertised in this paper. The city Recorder has been in. Btructed to let the contract for the improvement of the alley petitioned in by Messrs. Tope, Good, and others. ' A. Christmas party will be given V LPDiller Eq, at the Court Jiouse in this city, on the evening of he 23th. thT!heSale of lne pper mill on lath, was postponed to the 19th. The Sacramento Daily Record, a neat appearing, well conducted paper, claims an old acquaintance with us. Its scrap of our history is nearly correct, we were a devil in the office of Schuyler Colfax, and did establish the Enterprise at Mish awaka. but it was not that Enterprise which gave us a stake to get out here. We like the Record, and for a more intimate acquaintance in fu ture shall be pleased to exchange For further particulars Dax see Doc. Loryea, you will find him a member of the third house, about now, at Sacramento. C. B. B. C..There will be a regular meeting of the Clackamas Base Ball Club on Thursday evening Dec. 19th 1867, important business. AH members are requested to attend. Meeting to be held in the Conrt room. Oswego Iron is sold at a fair living rate. The furnace is in full blast, and as soon as the speculative feeling of Consignees at San Fran- cbco is over with, there will be a des mand for it. Shooting Match. On the day before Christmas Mr. W. W. Quiim, of Canemah, will put up about fifty of the fattest Tur keys ever raised in Oregon, to be shot at in regular shooting match style, on the bluff, between that place and this city. This is a fine chance for parties to get a good Turkey for a Christmas dinner. We were among the fortunate mortals who fell in with the good Samaritans, and other Odds at Portland, on last Thursday evening. We return to ' our tast with a lighter heart, more encouraged for the battles before us, and feeling every way a better man for having paid the Brother hood this visit, and regret that time forbids better notice of the events this week. Jack Alphin, everybody must know- Jack, paid us a visit yesterday. Jack is about the only true blue Democrat in the county of Multnomah, and as such is en titled to distinction by his party, yet he would not accept of any office, from alder man up to President wherein he differs with Andrew Johnson preferring to sell whiskey and oysters, which is Jack ?s fort : ...i . . . . . now, in l oruanu. The operation of this palatable rem edy upon the stomach, liver and excretory organs is singularly soothing and conserva tive. It regulates, recruits, and purifies them. Dyspepsia in all its lorms yields to its control and invigorating properties, and it is recommended to mothers, enfeebled by the cares and duties of maternity, as the safest and best reniedy they can probably use. In all the crisis of female life it will be found eminently useful, and elderly persons will derive much more benefit from it than from ordinary stimulants. "VTOTIIIXG THAT IS TSQt WIIOLE JlN some, genial, and restorative in its na ture, enters into the composition of HOS TETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. This popular preparation contains no mineral of any kind ; no deadly botanical element ; no fiery excitant; but is a combination of the extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants, with the purest and mildest of ail dillusire stimulants. The week stomach is rapidly invigorated", and the appetite restored by this tonic, and hence it works wonders in cases of Dvspepsia, and in less confirmed forma of Indigestion. Acting as a gentle and painless apricnt, as well as upon the liver, it also invariably re lieves the Constipation superinduced by ir regular action of the digestive and secretive organs. Persons of feeble habit, liable to Nervous Attacks. Lowness of Spirits, and Fits of Languor, find prompt and permament relief from the Bitters. The testimony on this point is conclusive, and from both'sexes. As a Genuine Tonic, HOSTETTER'S BIT TERS produce effects which must be experi enced or witnessed before they can be fully appreciated. In cases of Constitutional Weakness, Premature Decay, and Debihtj and Decrepitude arising from Old age, it ex ercises the electric influence. In the conva lescent stages of all diseases it operates as a delightful invigorant. When the powers of nature are relaxed, it operates to re-enforce and re-establish them.
