On Monday nvrninnr o fow moments past G o'clock, the alarm of fire was raised, and people rushed en masse, with buckets, to the scene of the confl igra tion. Dr. Barclay's residence. Fur tunately it was only a chimney on fire, and no damage was done. It 1 served to remind us all, however, that running to a fire promiscuously, with water buckets and quart mugs as not just the thing. There was considerable talk next day about fire apparatus, but we believe the whole subject again went to sleep in sleepy minds before sun set Tuesday. This town has been most fortunate about fire.s but some of these days we will cutSi a sweetener. There is more money paid out annually for iusurance than would equip and maintain a superb department. Scriptural Passages. We have several churches in this city, and con gregations assemble at least three or four times weekly to listen to the words of divine revelut;on. Not withstanding this there are many who attend church that may not be familiar with the following passages from Proverbs, VI: These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination to him. The Cathedral of Saint Gudule, at Bruss els, contains a carved oak pulpit, worthy of special mention. It rep resents the expulsion of Adam ar.d Eve from Paradise, and was carved in 109 I, by Henry Urbrugger, of Antwerp, for the Jesuits of Louvain. After the suppression of that order it was given, in 1770, by Maria Theresa, to the Cathedral. A com plete vegetation, together with the birds and animals of the garden, forms the stairway, and in fact the whole pulpit. On the top stands the Virgin holding the infant Jesus in her arms, who is endeavoring to thrust the cross in the head of the serpent thus carrying out the Scriptural prophecy, "The seed of the woman shall bruise the head of the serpent." The figures are life size, and the entire carving is done in such a manner as to astonish all beholders. In this splendid oak en carving the seven cardinal sins are beautifully typified, as, instance, lech ery in tne monkey, pride in the pea- cock, siotn in the tortoise, cunning in tne tux, etc. Lauge Syphon. The syphon to bring the Wenham water across Bev erly channel to Salem (Mass.) is beiug constructed at the draw, and i j a huge affair that will weigh one hundred tons. It is made of tiinber, boltcd to gether and lined with cement, with the water pipe inside. The whole will be sunk in a trench eight feet be low the bottom of the channel. To lift and lower it will be a big op eration. A Successful Establishment. Among the most successful establishments in the cousitrv is that of Howe & Stevens. manufacturers of Familv Dve Col ors. Thi-v eniploy a large number 'of persons, and their mm on are to ue louinl in every part or the country.
