V) 0 O o 0O o O' 0 OVU LOYAL KAU, Q-Guloyal dead ! What floods of tears For them have flown these passing years! AVhat silent anguish, grief and pain Been felt for these, our patriots slain. When banners strange were seen to riso And lloat against the Southern skies, And clouds of treason gathering' fast Our nation's death to seal at lust. Then these, osr kindred lost, went forth A valiant army from tim North, Resplendent in their valorous might; To battle for a nation's right. O'er mountains and rugged plains, Through dismal swanjps and winter rains, Each battling his nation to save, Rushed on to till a soldier's grave. Sleep on, proud martyrs, calmly sleep ; Though tears. shall fall and kindred weep, A priceless boM your valor won A Nation's lite sleep on, sleep on. Yen, rest secure in slumbers sweet The flag you served your winding sheet ; A nation'sjgTatitude shall raise Your memory to the towering skies. Your names untarnished, none shall dare To breathe a slanderous whisper here, Or from your crown of glory tear One single leaf or pearly star. Your fame secure your warfare o'er Your spirits rest on yonder shore Until earth's conflict shall be done ; Sleep on, loved patriots, sleep on. Jonxsox. Milwaukee, On., Nov. 3d, 1SG7. FA KM ITEMS. A writer in the Country Gentle man, in speaking of the value of sheep to pasture-lands, has these remarks : " I think there is another reason why the sheep improve the wifd, bushy pasture besides the fertility which their manure imparts to it. Orch ardistsare sometimes made too miliar with the strong propensities wnicn sheep oiten have, to strip leaves as well as bark from young trees. This propensity may be turned to excellent account by confining them in pastures infested with bushes throughout the season. At certain times they will make an assault upon these bushes, and by keeping them Etripped, enfeeble or destroy them." TheGfcow of Christopher Young, who lives near Florence, Mass., was milked dry for several nights in suc cession recently, and although he kept watch he was unable to catch the thjef. It vp at last discovered by settings trough full of milk as baff1, that a snake was the depreda tor. The reptile, together with six of its offspring, was at once dis- imbucu, uuu measured over seven feet in length. It was of a grayish color, and known as the milk snake, - from its habit of milking cows. An exchange says: "A poison of any conceivable description and de gree of potency, which has been swallowed intentionally, or by acci dent, may be rendered instantly harm less by swallowing two gills of sweet oil. An individual with a very strong constitution should take twice the quantity. This oil will neutral ize every form of vegetable or miner al poison with which physicians or druggists are acquainted." George Ii. Mawley, Glen's Falls, writes concerning a small experiment 'n poultry raising the past season. His account embraces ete months, ending January 31, 1807. lie paid for stock, Spanish and Brahma, 34. 5; feed, ten months, $10.20. adver tisement, $1 50. Q Mr. Bordman, a well known wool- grower of Illinois, says no hand washing of sheep he has seen, is equal to three swims with an hour or two iuterval between, and that a wool- "bvycr in an adjoining county gave the best price and greatest praise to the only clip of wool in that county which wasvashed by swimming the sheep. Sauk county, Wisconsin, had, in 18G6, 898 acres of land devoted to the caltivation of the hop vine, the yield being 1,022,782 pounds. This year 2,548 are to be picked, and it is 3 estimated that in 1S63, 5,5S8 acres will be devoted to the cultivation of this plant. This attempt to diversify th agriculture of a portion of the great west, therefore, appears to have teen remarkably successful. The Muskegan News states that uue a young man was driving home a load of hay one day last week near that place, a man asked him to ride, which being refused he set fire to the 0feay in the rear of the load and suc ceeded in escaping before it w.is Un covered.
