V 0 SEE first tage. 0tnajority in fav9r of strong drink? But let rae pass to that gftat marvel of Enter prise, the Queen City of the mighty lakes, renowned for her wealth, and the grasp ing combinations of far seeing power and influence, and learning the destinies of the trade and commerce of the mighty valley over which she seems to preside. She too yields herself soul and body, to the voluptuous embrace of the wine God, and naturally enough writes herself to the world " The eity of seduction, divorce, and Infanticide.7' The time is perhaps past, -when a pro phet shall call another Cyrus from a dis tant empire to avenge the wrongs of a chosen people, but ihere is stilfleft a higher law in the universe of God which 8b.aU yet rule in the interest of humanity and right, and selecting what is good from the mighty shall consign the remainder to the engulphing vortex of ruin. If we turn our reluctant gaze to the capital of our nation we shall find this universal genius of destruction ruling in the people's man Bion, while shameless infamy in a gale of light plays such fantastitricks before high heaven as would make angels weep.'7 The sckrlet sin waits for retribution. It requires no prophet to foretell its doom. Beneath the dome of the very Capitol where the people, waiting and labor ing, and patient, still expect to see their justice done and made into law whereby their will may be executed in a just and righteous manner, are amazed and insult ed by Senatorial Representatives, mem bers of the highest legislative body in the world, revelling in intoxication "around the very tar of freedom ; while the soft ened hand of voluptuous indulgence, and theyme flushed face pf beauty, after con ducting them through the orgies of mid- night legislation, conduct them to the u feverish repose of a couch that knows no innocence, and feels no shame. Uut the hour of vengeance must strike at last no nation can endure such wrong long, and live. Decency, morality, relic-ion In ft- i.t', human and divine, aft unite in proclaiming O lopQ25 and loud anathemas against the na tional sin of drunkenness. There is a 0 deep and mighty force moving upon the troubled waters, and the " peace be still" ehall soon be uttered and obeyed, or else the nation sinks in the vortex of revolutions. "We have just passed the baptismal sea ot blood foirihe sin of slavery. AV n. idly passing to another, led on by the tol erated example of drunken men ii high places. Freedom is the great gift of our civilization but if we as a nation tolerate iniquity and wrong it shall surely be ta ken from us, and we" in the lamniao-e of the immortal Clay, " shall die, ignobly die, mean, abject slaves, the scorn and eon tempt of mankind." I know full well there are other crimes and calamities to afflict the human race, besides those that spring from drunk enness, the original complete and perfect constitution of man has been shattered by some mighty convulsion in his nature. His reason to an extent has been dethron ed, his memory dimmed, perverted and wronged, his imagination troubled with phantoms and led into mazy errors where doubt and chance pass for truth and law his judgment unbalanced in the eternal buaie or right ; ms whole being fleein from the orbit of its creation has wander! ed forth. o " To rea,ms untrarelud by the sun tV here times for wandering tide has never Yet notwithstanding all this, man still remains the ruler of the world, and the prop of the universe, the connecting link between the finite and the infinite, and upon all his acts hang immortal conse quences. Whatever therefore puts this mighty instrument out of time and vields the sceptre of discord over its vast em pire is dangerous to use ; and such is the demon that looks out of the bubbles of the wine cup and with the specious smile of sparkling splendor sees alike with double ecstacy the fall of simple virtue, and thtHlestruetion of States and Empires ind the overthrow of nations trembling in the balance. An ordinary obscure iivmi uut U1 111110 a impugn no mav exert a dele terious lntluenceto some extent, cannot move the political world by his obliquity or derelictions ; but when a ruler is di rected and urged on by this genius of de struction, then States and Empires feel the colhd:ng wheels of a strange derange ment, and are startled by the fearful omens of coming change. Why is it,I ask, that while I now speak, the Governors of fctates are holding council? Why is it that the border States, Hushed with there turning soldiers from the field of the van quished are re-susticating the fell spirit misrule, if not of rebellion, and preparing lor an unknown yet terrible conflict! It is because the chosen ruler of the land holds carnival in the people's house with wine and women. "Only this and nothing wore, men are afraid of such rulers and dare not trust them ; I tell you the nation must wheel into the temperance line, vol untarily, or it will be shocked from its propriety by the concussion of some awful lorce. But Ladies and Gentlemen I do not -w ish to deviate too far from a temperance address, 1 have not intentionally wander ed into forbidded regions of thought or airgument, or trespassed on forbidden ground. As an independent thinker, and a free man, I shall and do speak of our common country in connection with this great subject, and I may, I trust, ia my umble sphere speak to my country even here to-night and implore "it to stand erect once more, and shake oft" at once and for evethe folds of this enormous serpent that is crushing out its life. Let her put on the garments of temperance, purity, and truth, and go forth in the moriiino- of her youth and beauty. -'Fair as tl moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as8 an army with banners." Ladies and Gentlemen I have a little more to say to you to-night what is said, ia said, would it were worthier. I have voiced ray sentiments in the words of irutn and soberness. Upon everlasting truths I fain would take my stand and luv !UMiiuu in spue oi all op posing elements. Your kindness and at tention have deeply moved me. I have convinced myself, and I trust I have con duced you, .Mr. Chairman, that this cause is mighty aud will prevail. I see clearly as the sun in Hon von th .i eye of faith you shall see the star of hope forever fadeless and eternal in the sky. while purity, love and truth shall stand your everlasting sentinels ; move on ! work on I till you cover the whole State with your glory, till you make Oregon throughout as pure as the crystal foun tains that spring from the borders of eter nal snow and leap in sparkling beauty adown her mountain sides. Fling the bright radiance of your purity on the embryo States around you. In due time under the leadership of your energetic Beale send greeting to your sister States: "We're coming :yes, we're coining fifty thou sand strong"7 not like Sherman's march from Atlanta to the sea, tracked by war and led by Mars, but the songs of peace and led by Ceres, crowned with her wheaten sheaf, chanting the anthem of free thought, free labor, free speech, free homes, and absolute, unconditional free dom from all that can intoxicate, degrade, and ruin man. There are already mighty aids coming to your assistance and gather ing forces to join your march. Legisla tion the parent of law, has taken up your cause ; whole States are wheeling "into line, and one, gallant and prime moving Michigan, has incorporated prohibition into tundamental law. While therefore you have whole States for adjuncts, you need not fear. Volition and coerekm.prop erly blessed, rule the world; and this is no new dogma : it is an axiom as old as the beginning of time, for it began with the Government of God Hope and Fear, voli tion and law, are the very elements of our being and co-oval with the universe itself. Let no one suppose that his influence is too small to be felt in this mighty work. Each act ot goodness is immortal, it tells forever on human destiny. Its odor floats to Heaven, and its form finds a local hab itation and a name in the record everlast ing. The fiat of the soul, uttered in its own council-chamber trembles to the eter nal throne and is heard and heeded by the Almighty. A great resolve on the side of eternal truth, right and iustiee. Hashes along the endless chain of being till H centres m the infinite, and thence dings its eternal forces through the vast universe of God. How fade the transient splendors of the world compared with the things that take hold of and hang upon one im mortal being : "The soul secure in her existence smiles At the drawn dagger, and defies its point. The stars shall fade awav, the sun himself Grow dim with ag.e ; and nature sink in tears : P-ut'thou shalt flourish in immortal youth, Unhurt amid the war of elements, The wreck of matter, and the crash or worlds." Every one is master of Lis own destiny. To the tribunal of your own judgment every act is at first referred and there it must be passed upon. You know what is iiuii, uieu uo ii : uo it on ail occasions and under all circumstances, and the law will seldom have any ground of interfer ence with the individual affairs of men : crime will shun the face of truth, and duty well performed will avert the judgment of courts, and will fix the relations of hus band and wife, parent and child, guardian and ward, friend and friendless, upon the broad basis of a common humanity, exalt ed virtue, and christian morality. A bet ter condition of society is attainable and these are the simple elements of its organ ization ; on its solid base shall rise' the structure of abetter civilization when fam ilies, communities and nations shall enjoy a nobler liberty, and when among other great and glorious things, the genius of Temperance vigorous iu health, adorned with wealth, crowned with peace, and clothed in beauty, and bearing aloft her banner inscribed with "peace on earth and good will to men," shall move along the track of human progress in the pres ence of a multitude ' that no man can number" to a home that knows no wrang ling, and a land unvisited by sorrow. THE SUPERIOR QUALITY OF THE AMERICAN WATCH MADE AT WALT HAM, MASS. The American Watch Company, ot Walt- har.i, Mass., respectfully submit that their Watches are cheaper, more accurate, less complex, more durable, better adapted for general use,and more easily kept iu order and repaired than any watches -in the market. They are simpler in structure, and therefore stronger, and less likely to be in hired than the majority ot foreign watches, which are composed ot trom 125 to 300 pieces, while ia an old English watch there are more than 7o0 parts. How they run under the hardest trial watches can have, is shown by the fol lowing letter : FENN. RAILROAD COMPANY. Office of the General Svperixtexdent, ) Altoona, Pa., 15th Dee., isH6. ) Gi ntb'na '. : The watches manufactured by you have been in use on this railroad for several years by our tnginemen, to whom we furnish watches as part of our equipment. Thsre are now some three hundred of them carried on our line, and we consider them good and reliable time keepers. Indeed, I have great satisfaction iu saving vour watches give us less trouble, and'have worn and do wear much longer without repairs than any watches we have ever had in use on tins road. As you are aware, we formerly trusted to those of English manufacture, of acknowledged good reputation; but as a class they never kept time as correctly, nor have they done as good service, as yours. In these statements I am sustained by my predecessor, Mr. Lewis, whose experience extended over a series of" y ears. Respectfully, EDWARD II. WILLIAMS, G tt era I ,S j, ri ten. Jen t.
