Rick Potato. Mr. J. 1 Cuson has left
bt our oflice samples of the rice potato,
but few of which variety, possibly none
ide froQ this Held, are raised in Oregon.
The seed from which these grew was
brought from the Atlantic Stab's in 1; Gl,
bv Mr. P. (' .Stewart of Portland. Three
crops have been produced, upon the
Clackamas farm.that ofthis season showing
a marked improvement in the stock from
the "small, stunted growth of the original
States potatoe, we now see before us the
healthy, matured product, weighing on the
average about two lb?, each. The Rice
pot ito somewhat resembles, in tinted col
or, the Peach blow, in shape and color of
nifar it hears the appearance uf the white
kidney. It is of a hardy nature, and will
grow well on corn land.
Ten Nkw Coi.t MiuA.v. A few years ago,
before the metropolis of Oregon began to
pu-t on so much dignity, the Columbian
was considered one of the best hotels
in the State. Our recollection of it dates
back to the fad of 102, when aweary
pilgrim we sought shelter beneath its roof.
While we were in Poise the next year Mr.
.-.Carter razed the Columbian, and erected
mi its site the present structure. Now, the
ina-sive. iron-bound, steam driven cylinder
press of the Ore.jnuia1, serves food daily
for famisX-ing intellect, about where Mr.
Sinnott's former lining room was located,
and the Herald rattles away in one corner,
up stairs, about where people used to sleep
and dream. However. Mr. Sinnott Ls well
tituated to render himself and guests com
fortable, at the New Columbian.
Ciikxit Cot iiT. The Circuit, Court for
the county of Clackamas adjourned on
Thursday. Some business went over. The
principal causes tried this week were, the
State vs. J. K. Walsh, indictment for as-t-ault
with intent to kill; erdict not guilty.
State vs. Burehardt. the same cause and
result. State vs. Dingman. indictment for
reduction ; verdict guilty, and defendant
fined $s;iM) Of) and costs" which was little
enough punishment. Probably if the de
fendant had not a voting and forgiving
wito. and an indulgent father-in law, he
might have stood a show at serving the
State a term at Salem.
Sit-it"!in Scknks.- A friend informs us
that after old Harvey had left for the res
ervation with his Indians, on Monday last,
a person who had called in at a ranch
bereft of a keeper by tin's modern idea of
Justice, saw a scene of desolation that
in ide him slmdder. He there found a little
child, perhaps ." months old. sitting on
one end of the pillow where res ted the
pightless head of its aunt. poor, blind,
helpless and alone. .One of the women. wife
of Oregon, when captured by the precious
government agent's trapper, was on her
q way to her daily labor, but was taken to
one side and there tied up. Was every
fclavery more abject.
Many Thanks.-We have to acknowledge
many very kind courtesies extended to us
by friends in attendance at the late term
of the Circuit Court in this city. The kind
words spoken in our behalf, will be ever
cherished and valued by us. For several
collections of fruits, which on one or two
days lent the air of an horticultural exhi
bition to our sanctum, the donors one end
all have our grateful thanks. These inci
dents stir up within us feelings irreconcil
able with our condition. Were we worth
a million we should go our last cent on
Oregon.

Lost. On Friday, October 25th, either
on board the Portland steamer, or at the
P. T. Company's wharf in this city, a small
package. 12 or 15 inches in length, wrap
ped in brown paper, was lost. Any one
finding the same will oblige Mrs. Hurley
by leaving it at the store ot J. R. Ralston.

Life I.vsieaxce. The Mutual Life Insur
ance Company of New York to-day present
their card to our readers. .Accompanying
the advertisement we received from the
agent several tine publications, from which
we learn this is the oldest mut ual life insur
ance company in this country, having be
gan business before any other. Its assets
are much the largest of any in the country.
The business of this company is purely
cash, and the policy holders are the onlv
stockholders. Every person insured in the
Mutual Life Insurance Company of New
York, has either a constantly increasing
policy or a decreasing premium, as he may
prefer.
New Tehm. A new term commenced at
the Seminary on last Monday. The last term
was very satisfactory. The average attend
for the term was 105, the aggregate being
1S2. More calls were made tfiii in the term
than for a whole year previous, showing
that there has been a considerable interest
manifested of late in the minus of the peo
ple concerning the school.
Blckwheat. Mr. C. Deardorfl, of this
county, this year produced from 2 1-2 acres
of ground 70 bushels of as fine buckwheat
as ever greWi In fact it has done'more than
that 31 measured bushels weighed 35 at the
mill, and gave 1045 lbs. of flour. This Hour
was sold by the loo lbs. at 6" cents. The
proceeds of the 2 1-2 acres, deducting ex
penses, would probablv fall not far short of
? 120.00.
The Senator. This steamer in the line
of the P. T. Company, is now at her berth
in this city, under command of Mr. Thomas
Barry. Mr. Murray is putting her under a
thorough coat of paint, and when she sails
again she will not only swim like a duck,
but will hold a striking contrast iu appear
ance to a new toy.
The Heaviest Yet. We hear of a farmer
in tie western part of this county who this
season raised 4.00 bushels of potatoes from
three-fourths of an acre. One large one,
about the size of a man's head, it was esti
mated would wei".h six pounds.
Venison. Vfe are indebted to Bro. N. W.
Randall for a few cuts of the choicest venison
perhaps ever placed upon a table before a
gourmand. It would have done credit to
belmonico himself to see it. The deer are
in most excellent condition this fall.
Ci Riu Salmon-. Mr. L. Diller, of the Lin
coln Bakery in this city, has shipped con
s dcraljle cured salmon this season. The
first smoked that has perhaps ever been
shipped from here, he sent a few weeks ago.
It was splendid, too.
K.MBRoi;;nT. During the week past an
other finely embroidered blanket, with
smaller letters, an improvement on the first
by the same lady, was sent to Portland from
the works of "the Woolen Manufacturing
Company.
IIeaso.v Called for. Brig. Gen.
Cbas. P.Stone in 1SG3 was arrested
at midnight, placed in Fort Lafay
ette, removed from his cemmand,
charged with treasonable practices,
kept without a trial, mustered out of
his rank in the middle of the war, af
ter a brilliant service in Louisiana,
and, in fact, driven from the army in
disgrace. This is one of the myster
ies of Mr. Lincoln's Administration,
and as Mr. Stanton gave the order
for Gen. Stone's arrest, now that he
is ont of office he may probably give
the reason.
