AVKmjME. We fir pleased, to welcome
to this county Mr. Uriah Payne, -late of
JJlne Earth county, Minnesota. Mr. Payne
ill not here be compelled to dig. dig.dig,
fxrven months of the year for but little
more than sufficient to winter him through,
lie may now congratulate himself, that
although in the region of perpetual snow
instances will lmlee.l ue rare woen .l
become necessary for him to wade about
in it knee deep 'to fodder the cattle.

Rick Potato. Mr. J. 1 Cuson has left
bt our oflice samples of the rice potato,
but few of which variety, possibly none
ide froQ this Held, are raised in Oregon.
The seed from which these grew was
brought from the Atlantic Stab's in 1; Gl,
bv Mr. P. (' .Stewart of Portland. Three
crops have been produced, upon the
Clackamas farm.that ofthis season showing
a marked improvement in the stock from
the "small, stunted growth of the original
States potatoe, we now see before us the
healthy, matured product, weighing on the
average about two lb?, each. The Rice
pot ito somewhat resembles, in tinted col
or, the Peach blow, in shape and color of
nifar it hears the appearance uf the white
kidney. It is of a hardy nature, and will
grow well on corn land.
Ten Nkw Coi.t MiuA.v. A few years ago,
before the metropolis of Oregon began to
pu-t on so much dignity, the Columbian
was considered one of the best hotels
in the State. Our recollection of it dates
back to the fad of 102, when aweary
pilgrim we sought shelter beneath its roof.
While we were in Poise the next year Mr.
.-.Carter razed the Columbian, and erected
mi its site the present structure. Now, the
ina-sive. iron-bound, steam driven cylinder
press of the Ore.jnuia1, serves food daily
for famisX-ing intellect, about where Mr.
Sinnott's former lining room was located,
and the Herald rattles away in one corner,
up stairs, about where people used to sleep
and dream. However. Mr. Sinnott Ls well
tituated to render himself and guests com
fortable, at the New Columbian.
Ciikxit Cot iiT. The Circuit, Court for
the county of Clackamas adjourned on
Thursday. Some business went over. The
principal causes tried this week were, the
State vs. J. K. Walsh, indictment for as-t-ault
with intent to kill; erdict not guilty.
State vs. Burehardt. the same cause and
result. State vs. Dingman. indictment for
reduction ; verdict guilty, and defendant
fined $s;iM) Of) and costs" which was little
enough punishment. Probably if the de
fendant had not a voting and forgiving
wito. and an indulgent father-in law, he
might have stood a show at serving the
State a term at Salem.
Sit-it"!in Scknks.- A friend informs us
that after old Harvey had left for the res
ervation with his Indians, on Monday last,
a person who had called in at a ranch
bereft of a keeper by tin's modern idea of
Justice, saw a scene of desolation that
in ide him slmdder. He there found a little
child, perhaps ." months old. sitting on
one end of the pillow where res ted the
pightless head of its aunt. poor, blind,
helpless and alone. .One of the women. wife
of Oregon, when captured by the precious
government agent's trapper, was on her
q way to her daily labor, but was taken to
one side and there tied up. Was every
fclavery more abject.
Many Thanks.-We have to acknowledge
many very kind courtesies extended to us
by friends in attendance at the late term
of the Circuit Court in this city. The kind
words spoken in our behalf, will be ever
cherished and valued by us. For several
collections of fruits, which on one or two
days lent the air of an horticultural exhi
bition to our sanctum, the donors one end
all have our grateful thanks. These inci
dents stir up within us feelings irreconcil
able with our condition. Were we worth
a million we should go our last cent on
Oregon.
O
Choicb Fim-it. Mrs. J. T. Chittvood, of
Damascus, has placed upon our table choice
samples of the King of Tompkins county,
and Ulue'lVarmaln vanities of apples. They
nVcvery nice, uud Jhd l;iiv has our thanks
tor tha favor. Mr. John W. Cox has also
left some choice Newtown Pippins with us,
which will be excellent aions toward spring.
Mr. f ox informs us that this f.dl he picked
forty -one apples, of the Rimbo variety, from
O tlt-vcn inches of limb in extent.
Cockt Hoi sr. Block. The late finishing
of!" done upon Court House block makes au
improvement at the north end of town
when put with those made upon the Entf.r
ntisK building quite appreciative. Now
we think the Masonic fraternity ouufnt to
move in the matter of brushing up "their
biuldmi:, that its exterior may correspond
with the interior. The stucco woik on
Court CJlous'e block was done by Messrs.
Niiiis ,t Khoades. The painting by Mr. C.
F. Mnrrav,
Hntr.Y Nuw is the time to get your
potatoes off. and get the cash for them, be
fore the roads become in such condition
that travel is impossible, with a loaded
leant. Barlow Sc Sheppard have advanced
t ie price on potatoes, as will be seen, to
4u(-.;,o cent- vi bushel for all that will be
delivered within two weeks, or before they
get wet in the ground.
Notice. -We are prepared to receive
potatoe?, butter, eggs, and wood on sub
scription from farmers, at current prices.
We cannot stand delays this year and
now give notice that subscriptions must
be paid in advance; or ninety days from
the beginning of the volume. tf
Lost. On Friday, October 25th, either
on board the Portland steamer, or at the
P. T. Company's wharf in this city, a small
package. 12 or 15 inches in length, wrap
ped in brown paper, was lost. Any one
finding the same will oblige Mrs. Hurley
by leaving it at the store ot J. R. Ralston.
Goon. We return our best thanks to
our old subscribers. Up to this date but
22 names have dropped off, and we have
added lso ncvr names to the lists. Sub
scriptions may begin at any time. Our
Mifiks are kept bv'numbers.' We furnish

Life I.vsieaxce. The Mutual Life Insur
ance Company of New York to-day present
their card to our readers. .Accompanying
the advertisement we received from the
agent several tine publications, from which
we learn this is the oldest mut ual life insur
ance company in this country, having be
gan business before any other. Its assets
are much the largest of any in the country.
The business of this company is purely
cash, and the policy holders are the onlv
stockholders. Every person insured in the
Mutual Life Insurance Company of New
York, has either a constantly increasing
policy or a decreasing premium, as he may
prefer.
New Tehm. A new term commenced at
the Seminary on last Monday. The last term
was very satisfactory. The average attend
for the term was 105, the aggregate being
1S2. More calls were made tfiii in the term
than for a whole year previous, showing
that there has been a considerable interest
manifested of late in the minus of the peo
ple concerning the school.
Blckwheat. Mr. C. Deardorfl, of this
county, this year produced from 2 1-2 acres
of ground 70 bushels of as fine buckwheat
as ever greWi In fact it has done'more than
that 31 measured bushels weighed 35 at the
mill, and gave 1045 lbs. of flour. This Hour
was sold by the loo lbs. at 6" cents. The
proceeds of the 2 1-2 acres, deducting ex
penses, would probablv fall not far short of
? 120.00.
The Senator. This steamer in the line
of the P. T. Company, is now at her berth
in this city, under command of Mr. Thomas
Barry. Mr. Murray is putting her under a
thorough coat of paint, and when she sails
again she will not only swim like a duck,
but will hold a striking contrast iu appear
ance to a new toy.
The Heaviest Yet. We hear of a farmer
in tie western part of this county who this
season raised 4.00 bushels of potatoes from
three-fourths of an acre. One large one,
about the size of a man's head, it was esti
mated would wei".h six pounds.
Venison. Vfe are indebted to Bro. N. W.
Randall for a few cuts of the choicest venison
perhaps ever placed upon a table before a
gourmand. It would have done credit to
belmonico himself to see it. The deer are
in most excellent condition this fall.
Ci Riu Salmon-. Mr. L. Diller, of the Lin
coln Bakery in this city, has shipped con
s dcraljle cured salmon this season. The
first smoked that has perhaps ever been
shipped from here, he sent a few weeks ago.
It was splendid, too.
K.MBRoi;;nT. During the week past an
other finely embroidered blanket, with
smaller letters, an improvement on the first
by the same lady, was sent to Portland from
the works of "the Woolen Manufacturing
Company.
IIeaso.v Called for. Brig. Gen.
Cbas. P.Stone in 1SG3 was arrested
at midnight, placed in Fort Lafay
ette, removed from his cemmand,
charged with treasonable practices,
kept without a trial, mustered out of
his rank in the middle of the war, af
ter a brilliant service in Louisiana,
and, in fact, driven from the army in
disgrace. This is one of the myster
ies of Mr. Lincoln's Administration,
and as Mr. Stanton gave the order
for Gen. Stone's arrest, now that he
is ont of office he may probably give
the reason.

Dr. IIostetter's Stomach Bit
ters. The operation of this palatable rem
edy upon the stomach, liver and excretory
organs is singularly soothing and conserva
tive. It regulates, recruits, and purities
them. Dyspepsia in all its forms yields to
its control and iuvigorating properties, and
it is recomineuded to mothers, enfeebled by
the cares and duties of maternity, as the
safest and best remedy they can probably
use. In all the crisis of female life it will be
found eminently useful, and elderly persons
will derive much more benefit from it than
from ordinary stimulants. Sold by the drug
trists and dealers everywhere.

Xew('aMf Edition of the WoiUs
of AVasUing'on Irving.
Iii announcing several new editions, in
a style of improved elegance and conveni
ence, of the Works of Washington Irving.
UK' publisher would take the opportunity
of acknowledging the good reception
which his efforts in the presentation of
these favorite writings have heretofore re
ceived. In the several forms in which the
various productions of the author of the
"Sketch-Book'-' have been given to the
public, it is estimated that the sale has
reached no less than fifty thousand of the
series, or more than a million volumes.
Nor is the demand yet abated. On the
contrary, new exertions of enterprise are
required to meet the desires of anew gen
eration of readers, and keep pace with the
progress of taste and refinement in the
typographic and other mechanic arts of
the publisher's calling.
The motive of this perennial popularity
is not far to seek. It is to be read on every
page of the delightful volumes in which
"Geoffrey Crayon' infused the happy in
spiration of his genius in his devotion to
themes which will always be regarded by
successive generations of readers with no
ordinary emotions of interest. The charm
of the felicitous style of Washington Irving,
the reflection of the amiable poetic ppirit
of the truly refined gentleman, would be
felt on any topic on which the author
had been pleased to bestow it. Put it is
for the ever-enduring fume of Irving that
he close for the exercise of his pen, topics
of undying value and importance In his
inviting Essays on human life and charac
ter in portraying manners, as in the Sketch
Book," ' Bracebridge Hall,'7 and other
volumes, he has touched, with mingled
sentiment and humor, those emotions
which are implanted in the hearts of all ;
while his topics of biography, of history
and romance, are of such world-wide cel
ebrity and passionate interest as the story
of Columbus and his followers, with their
discoveries of the New World ; the life of
the founder of the nation, George Wash
mgton. drawing with it the narrative of
the Civil and Military events of America
during Ida remarkable career; the marvel
ous record of Mahomet, with the illustra
tions of the genius of his race in the rom
antic fact and legend of " The Tales of the
Alhombra'' and the " Conrluest of Gra
nada ;'' the felicity wiih which the author
has linked his name with the birthplace of
Shakespeare, the genius of Oliver Gold
smith, the lame of Scott and Byron, and,
not least, the humorous invention which,
in Knickerbocker's irresistible Chronicle
of New York, has imputed a mythic inter
est to the bare early annals of his native
city. It is thus that the writings of Wash
ington Irving may be claimed to be im
perishable, till, what is not likely soon to
happen, the same cvcr-welcome themes
are treated in some happier manner. The
charm of Irving is his acceptability to all,
a grace and refinement to please the
most fastidious ; and his peculiar merit is
readily appreciated by every reader ; his
good sense and humor, the air of enjoy
ment pervading his pages, has secured his
works a home in both hemispheres, wher
ever the English language is understood.
Of the few indispensable authors in every
American library, Washington Irving is
certainly among the foremost. The de
light of childhood, the chivalric companion
of refined womanhood, the solace of life at
every period, his writings are an imper
ishable legacy of grace and beauty to his
countrymen.
The new publications of these works
will be in several forms of unusual ele
gance, and all, in proportion to a moderate
price for each, combining good taste with
economy. The series will be issued in the
following order punctually on the first day
of each month until completed, beginning
with October : Bracebridge Hall ; Astoria;
Wolfert's Roost; Bonneville; Sketch-Book;
Mahomet. 2 vols ; Traveler ; Granada ;
Knickerbocker ; Salmagundi ; Crayon Mis
cellany ; Spanish Papers ; Goldsmith ;

OTIIING THAT IS NOT WIIOLE
J some, gi-nial, and restoratite in its na
ture, enters into tbe composition of IiS;
TETTER'S STOMACH LITTERS. This
popular preparation contains no mineral of
any kind ; no deadly botanical element; no
licry excitant ; but is a combination of Ihe
extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants,
with the purest and mildest of all dillusive
stimulants.
The week stomach israpidiv invigorated,
and the appetite restored by this tonic, and
hence it works wonders in cases of Dyspepsia,
and in lens confirmed forms of Indigestion.
Acting as a gentle and painless apricnt, as
well as upon the liver; it also invariably re
lieves the Constipation superinduced by ir
regular action of the digestive aud secretive
organs.
Persons of feeble habit, liable to Nervous
Attacks, Lowness of Spirits, and Fits of
Languor, find prompt and permament relief
from the Bitters. The testimony on this
point is conclusive, and from both sexes.
As a Genuine Tonic, IIOSTETTER'S BIT
TERS produce elfects which must bo expel i
enced or witnessed before they can be fully
appreciated. In cases of Constitutional
Weakness, Premature I)eea3-, and Debility
and Decrepitude arising trom old aire, it ex
ercises me electric influence. In ttie conva
lescent stajjes of all diseases it operates as a
delightful invigorant. When the powers of
nature are relaxed, it operates to re-enforce
and re-establish them.
Last, but not least, it is the only safe stim
ulant, being manufactured from' sound and
inocuous materials, and entirely free from
the acrid elements present more or less in
all the ordinary tonics ami stomachics of the
day. SOLD EVERYWHERE.
