Colonel J. Hamilton to Professor
Townend Glover, entomologist of the
department, dated at Raleigh, North
Carolina : I observe in your report
that oa say that no very certain
means of ridding the horse's stomach
of the bots has yet been published.
Since receiving the following from
Dr. Johnson Gee, of Florida, I have
had no opportunity of trying, it but
it has the air of cflicacy, and I certain
ly shall on the first opportunity.
You are aware that it is hard some
times to distinguish between an at-?
tack of the bots and one of the colic;
this remedy, however, is equally effi
cient for either. The reason that a
bot can resist the action of agents ad
ministered is his power of drawing
his head into the walls of the stomach
by his tentacles. But he cannot re
sist the chloroform. A table-spoon
full of chloroform, screened by two
spoonfuls of any good mucilage, ill
make him let go his held on the
sfomach, even after having bored
nearly through."

Probstieb Oats. This variety of
oats is thus referred to by a corres
pondent : 44 I commenced with five
quarts, from which I gathered two
and a half bushels. Through the
carelessness of a servant, one bushel
of this was fed to the horses. Hence,
one aijd a half bushel of this was sown
broadcast on about (half an acre, on
tho th day of April. From this I
, have received twenty-nine and a hall
bushels of spledid grain, weighing
thirty pounds to the buslul. Tue
straw is deciJfidly superior as forage,
it being better supplied with leaves,
and the stalk is by fir less brittle than
the comroonOvarieties. Indeed one
could not well imagine the difference
in favor of the former, after passing
through the thresher. While the
common varieties are broken into
shreds, theCcther is merely bruised,

Stung bv a Tomato Worm. In
August last Miss Ettie Lewis, em
ployed in the family of F. D. Marsh,
CulJ water, Michigan, was stung by
a tomato worm. At first nothing
serious was anticipated from the
eting, but in a short time she was
seized wiiu spttsms so severe that it
was thought they would throw her
into convulsions, trte poison spread
ing rapidly through the system. She
was in the most excruciating pain
.through one day, but was improving
on the third day? It is thought by
many people that this worm is harm
less, but their sting is almost as bad
as that of a massasauga.

the relative nutritive value of large

ness. A writer in an exchange says:
"I have a remedy that has never failed
with me. It is simply salting the rats
regularly. I do this by laying salt
on the sills and ties of the stable, if
that is the place they most frequent;
but in fact, they will hunt for it. It
will occur to any farmer that sees this
remedy, that harness is most cut
where the greatest amount of sweat
has dried, an indication that salt con
tained, in it is what they want' The
Museum of Natural History, Paris,
was till recently overrun with rats,
in all its rooms and compartments
M. Cloez conceived the idea of pour
ing bisulphide of carbon into the holes
occupied by the vermin, the result of
which was that all the rats that stop
ped to inhale the odor were killed.
The museum is now entirely free from
the nuisance.
A Yankee conveying an English
gentleman round Boston, took him to
Bunker Hill. Thev stood looking at
the splendid shaft, when the Yankee
said: "This is the spot where War-,
ren felil" " Ah!" replied the Eng
lishman, evidently not posted up in
local historical matters, " did it 'urt
'im much?'' The native looked at
him with the expression ot fourteen
Fourth of Julys in his countenance.
" Hurt him!" he exclaimed, " he was
killed, sir." " Ah! 'e was, eh?" said
the stranger, still eyeing the monu
ment, and computing its height in his
own mind, layer by layer. Well,
I should think 'e would 'ave been 'urt
to full so far."
Food for Fattening Poultrt.
The cheapest and most advantageous
food to use for fattening every descrip
tion of poultry is ground oats; the
whole of the grain is ground to a fine
powder; nothing of any kind is taken
from it. When it is properly ground
one bushel of the meal will more ef
fectually fatten poultry than a bush
el and a half of any other meal. The
greatest point in fattening poultry is
to feed them at daybreak.
To Remove Fruit Stains. To
remove fruit stains from napkins, kc,
let the spotced part of the cloth im
bibe a little water without dripping,
and hold the part over a lighted com
mon brimstone match at a proper dis
tance. The sulphurous acid gas
which is discharged soon causes the
spots to disappear. Or wet the spot
with chlorine water.

Few business men advertise systemat
ically, liberally and persistently." Those
who pay most attention to it. either adver
tise fitfully or with a degree of neglect
which they would regard culpable in any
other department of their business.- What
would a merchant be thought of who only
opened his store now and then, to invite
and secure customers? Yet an advertise
ment in a flourishing paper is more con
spicuous; than one's store, is more observed.
and friore spoken of, and to withdraw it is
like putting up the shutters or taking
down the sign. The most enterprising
merchants and traders in the interior
think themselves liberal if they spend a
few hundred dollars a year for advertising.
They would deem the farmer blind to his
own interest who should be stingy in
planting, and should fail to put in seed in
proper quantity, because it cost something.
Advertising is the seed-planting of the
business men, and stinginess here must
make the harvest meagre.
What shall be the sum appropriated to
advertising? It will vary with the char
acter and extent of the business. But the
smallest trade can be made more profit
able by liberal advertising. The rule is
sometimes given that as much should be
paid for advertising as for rent. This
may be too much in some cases, too little
in others. But every business ought to
be kept constantly and prominently be
fore the readers of the established papers
of the parish from which trade is sought.
The readers of newspapers are the most
enterprising and intelligent of the popula
tion, and usually liave the most money to
spend. Beach them, and keep their at
tention, and you will create a current
which others will follow.
The Xew York Tribune states that it is
true, as reported, that a Boston druggist,
who has a specialty before the public, is
paying that establishment ten thousand
dollars a year for advertising ; he paid
one thousand five hundred dollars for the
insertion of one mammoth advertisement.
The Tribune adds :
" Bonner once paid us three thousand
dollars for one insertion of an advertise
ment of the Ledger. He knew that by ju
dicious advertising he could insure a
fortune."'
This seems large, but in England such
sums are hardly, exceptional. There ad
vertising is a regular part of business. It
is reckoned as necessary as rent and often
ten times as much is spent for it. Adver
tising must be done so as to reach the peo
ple whose custom is sought. A separate
sheet, a hand-bill or a circular, is a direct
attack ; and the person who receives it
either throws it aside without reading, or
he puts himself on the defensive against it.
A notice in the favorite paper is a flank
movement ; it catches the eye unawares ;
it attracts attention at an idle or a listless
moment ; it becomes part of the current
news. Then it is like the constant drop
ping. It may not be read to-day. To
morrow it will be glanced at. The next
week it will be looked over. Finally it
will be read. When a purchase is to be
made ; when trade is to be transferred
from the former dealer ; when a new arti
cle is needed, the notice will be hunted up
and the inducements offered subjected to
test. One such case often will pay for
one year's advertising.
Sometimes men get along without ad
vertising. Instances are given of pilgrims
reaching Mecca on their knees. It is
easier, pleasanter, swifter to go by steam.
Liberal and discreet advertising puts
business on wheels, and renders it active,
beneficent to the public, and remunera
tive to the dealer.
