THE STATE FAIIL
o
State Fair Grounds, )
October 12th, 1807. f
FJb. EKTzr.rRTSE :
q Ilavingromi! you a glance of
the Fairjust closing, in case you
'Ould t come to see for yourself, 1
feel bound to redeem the pledge.
Owing, doubtless, to the threatening
state of the weather, the first, second
suid thi'd days of the Fair showed a
lack of visitors, but 'seemed to have
very little hrftuence upon exhibitors.
TlQy kept on with their part of the
contributions towards a successful
exhibition as though they felt that
their desire for improvement in the
several departments of industry
placed them aliove incidental contms
gencies. As a consequence, the Fair
lias' been moreGf a success hi all im
portant bianchpg of industry than any
before held under the auspices of the
society. Leaving the details of the
several entries (and awards for an
other communication, I will now ouly
oname the prominent exhibitors in
fiWme of the more prominent classes.
In the cattle department were Messrs.
F razor, of Folk county, W. I. lies-
sen, Sam'l Drown, J. T. bmith, and
Titos. Cross, of Marion county. In
that of horses there were Messrs. T.
G. Naler, of Washington, V. T.
iXcwby and II. Henderson, of Yam
hill, Fowers, of Lane, Wallace and
LnfoMette, of Linn, J. (i. Casket, of
t?olkj)V. I. IJessen, J. Welch, and
Leonard, of Marion county, be
sides others from these and other
counties whose names I have not yet
learned. Exhibitors in the sheep de
partment were James Anderson, J.
O. Bell, A. Cary, II. C. Geer, J. L.
Farrish, T. L Davidson, Carter 5c
Chamberlain, Delos Jefferson, and J.
Minto, of Marion, and T. G. Naler,
.of Washington, and Jos. Elliott, of
"Clackamas county, together with W.
T. Newby, of Yamhill. The contest
in some of the classes of sheep was
quite spirited, and there were some
represented there which have not been
heretofore. The American, Austral
i.n, Spanih, and French Merino.
The South Down, Graded, and Fat
tSheep Divisions were fully shown,
and Cotovold and Leicestershire par
ti illy so. The exhibitors in the class
devoted to swine and poultjy were
A. Carey, W. I. Ile3sen, L. Daven
port, Thos. Cross, and J. L. I'arrish,
of Marion ; Frice, of Linn: Newby,
of Yamhill ; Lewelling and Mills, of
Washington county. I he F.ssex
breed had the best representation as
to numbers, unless we should count
Mr. Cross' stock amongst the breeds.
Ho had good specimens of boib. his
white and black tamil.es there. The
exhibition inside of the Favilion, and
in the sheds occupied by implement
and machinery contained more arti
cles of (te and beauty than your cor
respondent (owing to the pressing
nature of his duties) could find time
to fairly examine, but of which he
will endeavor to sj e kliby the book"
hereafter. Meanwhile I will close
this hasty letter by saying that those
who visited the Fair and had the
pleasure of hearing Miss K , of Linn
eoQnty, discourse vocal and instru
mental music inside the pavilion, and
Mr. Diifur, of Multnomah, fillin' the
grove of oak outside of it with the
well polished periods of an excellent
speech, will not fail to sec in those
two young persons the crowning ob
ject of the Fair useful intelligence
highly ornamented and those who
did nSt) see and hear them had better
make up their minds not to lose so
much pleasure when the time comes
for another exhibition.

What of the Winter? We sup
pose all the farmers have prepared
for cold weather. No doubt all the
toolsare gathered up and sheltered for
the winter, as no one can be so stupid
as to leave reapers, threshers, wag
ons, plows, &c, &c, that cost him a
thousand dollars to be damaged by
the weather something like five hun
dred dollars, when they could be sav
ed with little or no tro'uble. 2o pru
dent farmer will leave even a hoe cut
doors, for by spring a new handle
would be required which it would
now cost nothing to save. We sup
pose that all cellars are in good con
dition to preserve vegetables and
whatever that has been laid up
for future use; and especially are pots,
toes buried out doors sufficiently cov
erd to guard them against such weath
er as we may have. We suppose
that a good sized wood pile has been
provided and probably all cut and
split for winter use. At all events
if anything that ought to have been
done is left undone there is no time
to lose it should be done nt once
Now for the moral. When a farmer
with a healthy, good mannered fam
ily under his roof, with plenty in his
cellar, with a largo supply of wood
nt the door with no debts hanging
their dead weight upon him, with no
feverish anxiety for what will do him
no good, with a good understanding
with all his neighbors, a patriotic de
votion to his country, and with plenty
of paper and books to read when
such a farmer docs not feel satisfied
with this world he undoubtedly has
the liver complaint and dyspepsia, be
sides numberless intellectual and mor
al disorders that prove the fact that
some people cannot be made happy
by any combination of circumstances.
The faimer thus situated and free
free from physical maladies is a king
in the best sense of the term a king
over himself. His house is much
like one of those mansions we sing
of. and above all others, should be
satisfied with his lot.
A Nice Cream-cake. Beat very
lightly two eggs; stir them into one
pint of sour cream; sift in as much
flour a3 will make a stiff batter; dis
solve one tea spoonful of soda in a
cup of new milk; add this and a little
salt; mix these well, and pour into a
rather shallow pan. Bake quickly a
nice brown, serve hot.

A Young Lady Returning to her
country home, after a sojourn of a few
months in the city, was hardly recoguized
by her friends. In place of a coarse, rustic,
Hushed face, she had a soft ruby complexion
of almost marble smoothness, and instead of
twenty-three she really appeared but eigh
teen. " Upon inquiry as to the cause of so
great a change, she plainly told them that
she used the Circassian Balm, and considered
it an invaluable acquisition to any Lady's
toilet. By its use any Lady or Gentleman
can improve their personal appearance an
hundred fold. It is simple in its combi
nation, as Nature herself is simple, yet
unsurpassed in its efficacy in drawing
impurities from, also healing, cleansing
and beautifying the skin and complexion.
By its direct action on the cuticle it draws
from it all its impurities, kindly healing the
same, and leaving the surface as Nature in
tended it should be, clear, soft, smooth and
beautiful. Price ?1, sent by Mail or Express,

A Card From Tlie
American Watch Company
Of Wattham. Mix.
T
-nilS COMPANY BEG LEAVE TO IN-
form the public that thev com
menced operations in 1S."0. and their factory
now covers four acres of ground, and has
cost more than a million dollars, and em
ploys over 70) operatives. Tley produce
75,ooO Watches a year, and make and sell
not less than one half of all the watches sold
in the United States.
The difference between their manufacture
and the European, is briefly this : European
Watches are made almost entirely ly hand,
and the result is of necessity a lack of that
uniformity, which is indispensable to correct
time-keeping. Both the eye and the hand
of the most skillful operative must vary.
But it is a fact that, except watches of the
higher grades, European watches are the
product of the cheapest labor of Switzer
land, and the result is the worthless Ancres,
Lepnies and so called PaUnt Levers which
soon cost more in attempted repairs, than
their original price. Common workmen,
boys and women, buy the rough separate
parts of these watches from various facto
ries, polish and put them together, and take
them to the nearest watch merchant, who
stamps and engraves them with any name
or brand that may be ordered.
II mo American Watches are Made.
The American Waltham Watch is made
hy 110 such uncertain process and by no
such incompetent workmen. All the Com
pany's operations, from the reception of the
raw materials to the completion of the
Watch, are carried on under one roof, and
under one skillful and competent direction.
But the great distinguishing feature of their
Watches, is the fart that their several parts
are all made by the finest, the most perfect
and delicate machinery ever brought to the
aid of human industry. Every one of the
more than a hundred parts of every watch is
made by a machine that infallibly repro
duces every succeeding part with the most
unvarying accuracy. It was only necessary
to make one perfect watch of any particular
style and then to adjust the hundred man
chines necessary to reproduce every part of
that watch, and it follows that every suc
ceeding watch must belike it.
'the Company respectfully submit their
watches on their merits only. They claim
to make
A B.tter Article for the Money
by their improved mechanical processes
than can be made under the old-fashioned
handicraft system. They manufacture evei y
grade of watches, from a good, low priced
and substantia! article in solid silver huntng
cases, to the finest chronometer and ulso
ladies' watches in plain gold or the finest en
ameled and jeweled cases ; but the indispen
sable requisite of all their watches is that
they shall be good time keepers. It should
be remembered that. except their single low
est grade named "Home Watch Company,
Boston," a'l watches made by them are fully
warranted by a special certificate, and this
warrantee is good at all times against the
Company or its azonts.
