The game of base ball played on the grounds of the Stale Fair at Salem on the 11th, between the Clackamas and Pioneer clubs, was the most exciting game, perhaps. ver played upon the coast. The Oretjonian corres pondent says it was one of the most ex citing features of the day. It lasted for .seven1 1 hnrs and engaged the attention of hundreds of people. The game was very evenly played and drew out the best energies of the players. The " crowd'' caught the spirit of the game, and often waved hats and handkerchiefs and cheered. Surely base ball is In the brain, (and prob ably (ills many a one.) The innings were even, but the Pioneers made ;"S runs and the Clackamas but .r:. So the I'ioneers got the $10 premium, bat and ball, but it came pretty close to having a claim laid to it by our boys." Plows at the Faiu. There were sev eral Oregon plows on exhibition at the State Fair, but the Web-Fool, made by Mr. John W. Lewis of this city, took tin blue ribbon. All who have seen the Yeb-Fn,,i pronounce it the best plow ever made. The I. X. L." plow, recemly patented by -Mr. Brown ol'Rnsebiirg. was much admired by some. loiniiit's gang-plow is also an Oregon invention, and docs good work. It has two plows very nicely arranged, jwt behind the driver's seat, w here he can hit comfortably and drive his team, and by means of levers, he can raise his plows out of the ground or guide it deep or shallow as he may desire. A roguish fellow, after scrutinizing it closely, remarked that it was the lazy man's plow, and would suit Oregonians first rate." Collection- of Taxes. A Suor-ESTiow The Democrats of Ore gon City on last Sunday, as we learn, con- O Iributed for the purchase of powder to burn over ti e favorable results in Ohio and Pennsylvania. As Monday's dis patches changed the complexion of "tings O Iar," the powder was not used. We would like to see this fuse converted to use, and not having a cannon here to add lustre to such reports, we suggest that a few holes be drilled in rocks on the bluff, and the " blow out" be had anvhow. Oil Mill Maohixeky.- A considerable portion, if not all, the machinery of the Salem 6f Mill, arrived by the steamship erra Xevada. It is quite out of the ordi nary style of machinery as to shape, and while it lay on the wharf excited a great deal of curiosity. C.irrrKKD Two unknown robbers of a ranch below tho Dalles, when captured hy Sheriff Sclriltz. of Wasco county, were recognized as soon as taken on the steamer as Alexander and Hargrave. two of the robbr.s who lately broke jail at Auburn, Baker countv. The Fair is now closed, nd taken all together, it is probably the best ever held in the State. The total re ceipts from all sources amount to $7,188, against $7.07 last year. This makes a better showing than was anticipated on the first days of the fair. Ladies Eqcestp.ianism. A lady of this "ity. Miss Amanda Robbins, took the first premium at Salem for equestrianism. Miss Maggie Gilcrest of Marion countv. and Mrs. p.. c. Hutch inson of Lane, took the second and third priz.es. Congregational Services. Rev. V. Evening Services will be held this evening, and on to-morrow, Monday and Tuesday evenings. A Needed Cha :ge. An effort is being made to change the location of the stage road south of Salem so as to avoid the JCkson Hi). Clackamas County. It is very pleasant for us Clackamas county folks to feel that we are appreciated. It gmtifies our vanity to know that the two great twin cities the one on the right and the other on the left can claim no greater emoluments than Oregon Ci.y. The State Fair has proven us not like Homer, deaJ, but alive and kicking. We are no longer to be consid ered a " no account'' people, fit only to be swindled by everybody going right through us from the Capital to the magnifi cent Emporium of Oregon. Old Clacka mas can now seat herself down upon her green hill sides with the air of a Queen, saying to all envious seekers of fame! 'make clear the pathway now, and I will come to you, and I will" bring all that I have. yea. even the fat of the land, and we will all make merry together." Kvcry article on exhibition" at the State Fair from this county, took a premium. We have not space to devote to full particu lars this week, but it is a truth, neverthe less, now. if the State Society will pay us that SIoO.OO so long due us we will" get up a Fair of our ow n next year. Opposition' to Comiuneu Moxcfoi y. No enterprise deserves more at the hands of Oregonians than the Opposition Steam Ship Line to New York. High rates of fare have kept thousands from our shores w ho would have been glad to come here and make their homes with us. and help to build up our industrial enterprises and develop our boundless resources. The Opposition Line has now been maintained so long that it deserves the confidence of the people, and we are gratified to see that they are receiving such confidence. Every stenm-r is crowded to its utmost capacity, which is the best evidence thev could have of their popularity. Thev are making quick trips ahead of the mail the fare i.s low. and the route perfectly healthy. Patronize the opposition. The Initial Point. In case of a new survey, as there ought to be, of the route from the Columbia river to the head waters of the Missouri, the most feasible point at which t o si art from here, would no doubt he White Bluffs, which unmistakably pre sents the fewest obstacles as an initial point, and from whence to Pen d' Oreille Lake is the shortest road of any. It has been kept back by a few land'sharks in other places, but we think even they will soon appreciate that delays have afreadv been too great. Direct Tkade. The farmers of Yam hill county are about to inaugurate a sys tem which is worthy of Oregon. They svill charter a vessel, load her with grain, and ship her for the Atlantic seaboard. The J find J says : If this enterprise be a success, it will of course throw Oregon wheat into market with the California, pro duction, and nothing will be lost to us by the competition, and California will nut receive the credit, for producing Oregon wheat, which we know is a si.perk r article. Ei)iT..r.iAL Call. Our old Minnesota friend. Col. J. C. Dow, now the vigorous editor of the Colitmhia Press, called upon us on Wednesday, dined, and departed. We wish Dow was as good a Republican as he is a Democrat no. wo don't, either. We wish he would re.-olve to be an honest man by letting politics out. and stick to his legitimate profession, the practice of the law. Jackson- Cocnty. The assessment of Jackson County for ISG'7 is $1.2.35,397. Last year it was S 1 ..r.:)C.S70. The assessor says this difference is attributable to the :!'.)) exempted from each householder, making the actual wealth of the county about i?20').().h) oxer last year, as there are about S2o persons entitled to the ex emption. (n-i.tf HOSTETTER'S CELEBRATED STOMACH BITTERS ! A Pure and Powerful Tonic, Corrective and Alterative, of wonder ful eJlieaey in diseases of the STOMACH, LIVER AND BOWELS. PROTECTIVE FKOFEIJTIES. Prevents Fever and Ajjne and Billious Re mittent Fevers ; fortifies the system against Miasma and the evil effects of unwholesome water ; invigor ates the organs of digestion and the bowels ; Steadies tUc Nerves and tends to Pro long Life. KEMEDI.1L FKOPERTIES. Cures Dyspepsia, Liver Complaint, Sick and Nervous Headache, General Debility, Nervousness, Depression of Spirits, Constipation, Colic, Intermit tent Fevers, Sea Sickness, Cramps and Spasms, and all complaints of either sex arising from Bodily Weakness, whether inherent in the system or PRODUCED BY SPECIAL CAUSES- N 1A some, genial, and restorative in its na ture, enters into the composition of HOS TETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS. This popular preparation contains no mineral of any kind ; no deadly botanical element; no fiery excitant ; but is a combination of the extracts of rare balsamic herbs and plants, with the purest and mildest of all diffusive Stimulants. The week stomach is rapidly invigorated, and the appetite restored by this tonic, and hence it works wonders in cases of Dyspepsia, and in less confirmed forms of Indigestion. Acting as a gentle and painless api ient, as well as upon the liver, it also invariably re lieves the Constipation superinduced by ir regular action of the digestive and secretive organs. Persons of feeble habit, liable to Nervous Attacks, Lowness of Spirits, and Fits of Languor, find prompt and permaincnt relief from the Bitters. The testimony on this point is conclusive, and from both sexes. As a Genuine Tonic, HOSTETTER'S BIT TERS produce effects which must be experi enced or witnessed before they can be fully appreciated. In cases of Constitutional Weakness, Premature Decay, and Debilitj and Decrepitude arising troni old age, it ex ercises the electric influence. In the conva lescent stages of all diseases it operates as a delightful invigorant. When the powers of nature arc relaxed, it operates to re-enforce and re-establish them. Last, but not least, it is the only safe stim ulant, being manufactured from sound and ' inocuous materials, and entirely free from the acrid elements present more or less in all the ordinary- tonics and stomachics of the dav.
