e 0 ) Q WITHOUT THE CHILDREN. Oh, the weary, solemn silence Of a house without the children ! Oh, the strange oppressive stillness Where the children come no moe I Oh, the longing of the sleepless For the soft arms of the children. Oh, the longing for the faces PeepiDg through the opening door-- Faces gone forever more ! Strange it is to wake at midnight Andnot hear the children breathing NotWng but the old clock ticking, TickiDsj, ticking by the door. Strange to see the little dresse Hanging up there all the morning ; And the gaiters ah! their patter, We will hear it never more On our hearth-forsaken floor! What is home without the children? 'JEjs the earth without its verdure, And the sky without the sunshine ; Life is withered to the core ! So we'll leave this dreary desert, And we'll follow the good Shepherd To the greener pastures vernal. Where the Lambs have " gone before" With the Shepherd evermore ! 0 Blackwood on the Situation.- For a time after the close of our war, Blackwood, in common with other English Tory organs, was shamed into decency in its utterances npon Americar affairs. The laughable clumsiness of Charles Lever offering to recant "Cornelius O'DowdV ven omous abuse is still remembered, as 5s Fundi' s eager haste to eat its own dirty words and cartoons. Of course the London Times' columns became their own pillory. But Blaclacood seems disposed to resume its cynical tone, of which, some snarls are audi ble in the article of a late issue npon American finance. " Cornelius " sketches aaricature of the subject, borrowing the high lights from the wickedness of officials and contract ors, and relieving them by gloomy forebodings of a repudiation party and policy. lie absurdly talks of the "unexpected" close of tho war, and emit3 a plaintive whine tver the cotton loan, which some fossil Eng lishmen were foolish enough to ac cept, and are verdant enough to hope to receive payment for. As to repu diation, the forwardness of the Eng lish to charge other nations with the purpose of cheating, reminds one of the promptness among a certain class of litigants which the rogue always shows in accusing his opponent of perjury. Yet our contempt for its motive need. not prevent our profiting by an enemy's warning. Such a re sult as repudiation of our national debt is impossible we intend to pay it, which is more than England ex pects to do with hers. But the best way to make such a result iuconceiv able by foreigners is to hasten re union, and bring the resources and energy of the South once more into the taxpaying common stock of the country. It rests with the Southern ers themselves to do this, by accept ing the terms offered, and the friendly feeling of the great majority of the North which maintains those terms, ) as the best escape from the troubles broodirg over the land. " Of Sucn is'' Life. A year or so ago a ruffian in New York in a playful mauner cut his mistress's throat from ear to ear, and she died in great agony. He was arrested, tried, condemned, and will soon be hung. The beautiful condition of his mind appears in the announcement that he will " meet his fate in the spirit of a true Christian. The sisters of Mercy are welcome visitants to his cell: and, under the influence of their gentle teaching, his sorrows are made joys, his heart-griefs burdens that pain not, but strengthen for the coming struggle, and all things that breed dark forebodings to suggest thoughts of better things to oome in a better world beyond the grave." Tne poo9 girl hcrried into eternity, dumped into a nameless grave, for gotten, unwept, is of course not one of those " heart-griefs." &c, &c. National Finances Jo a quiet way, Mr. McCulloch has redeemed, within a very short period, at least " one hundrecTand fifty millions cers tificates of indebtedness, over one hundred millions compound-interest notes, and over one hundred millions deposits in the sub treasuries and min9, brides reducing the debt some two hundred and fifty odd millions since the time the plan of reduction was commenced. These immense operations, too, were conducted with out pausing ethe slightest ripple on" the surface of monetary affairs, and the country has maintained, through out, its fimrucial steadiness to a most remarkable degree. The only obli gations that he has yet to contend with are tho outstanding 7 30s and the unredeemed compound-interest notes, amounting to some five hun dred millions. Tue West. The farmers of the western part of New York feel con siderably depressed over the extreme flatulent of the sheep and wool mar kets. Sheep that readily brought five dollars per head in the spring, uow find weak market at less than half that sum, while wool is extremely dull at 3Sa40 cents. In many por tions, also, heir fruit will amount to little or nothing. A very fine hay crop has been secured, however, in excellent condition, and the general harvest lias been good. END OF VOLUME OXE. On the 19th inst. Volume one of the En terprise will be completed. We shall con tinue sending the paper to all whose names aretj present upon our lists, and be thank ul for any efforts on the part of our friends who may aid us in extending the circulation of our journal. The present circulation is nearely double what it was expected we would have at this time, and yet, we are of the opinion it may be in future easily increas ed at least one hRIf farther. With this view we make' the following LIBERAL PROPOSITION. To r.ny patron in the past who will send us one neio subscriber, and Five Dollars, we will forward two receipts in full for one year, being a reduction of fifty cents per annum per copy. CLUBS May be formed at the following rates : Ten copies one year, and one to the getter up of the club S25 GO Twenty copies one year, and two ex tra copies to the getter up of the club $3 00 Mailed to separate addresses if desired. The cash to accompany each order, inva riably, otherwise the regular rates of $3 will be charged, and advance payments consid ered to be within the range of thirty or siity days. We do not lay clafm to any very great rank in the world of Journalism, prefering to let the public juJg of us by our works. In the year about to close we have been as attentive as possible to the duties devolving upon us and can only promise to be as de voted in the future. With many thanks to the public for the good words spoken for us, and the patronage bestowed upon us, we shall start out as fresh nd resolutely with Volume Two as though it were but the be ginning of our experience in Oregon. All communications should be sent through the mail or express to I). C. IRELAND. Oregon City, Oct. 5th, 1307. A New Material for Beds. A new discovery has been made in Cal ifornia which is revolutionizing mat. tress making.' There is dug out of the mountains of the Sierra large a better material for beds than is now available in the markets of the world. It is fully equal to citrled hair, and comfortable, useful, and healthful beds. A factory. has been built on Little Bear river, about a mile from Dutch Flat, which is now employing a Urge number of men. The mate rial manufactured is the soap root, which grows in unlimited quantities in that region. Ccrk for Hydrophobia. A do" keeper in England, who wag bitten eight times by rabid dt'gs, each time averted the horrors of hydrophobia by allowing the common uitrate of sil ver to filter into the wound, which de composed the saliva, and thus destroy ed the virus. A London ph6icinn "adopts and endorses the remedy. Bcciitel's Photograph Gallery is the only establishment in Oregon that is thoroughly prepared to do aU the different styles of work in the art. Photographs from card to life size. The new Cabinet Cards, Ac, Ac. Small pictures enlarged (retouched in India ink painted in water colors or oil, by Mrs. S. J. Iiumsey.) All negatives taken in this gallery will ' be carefully preserved, that additional copies may be had. In place of a coarse, rustic, flushed face, she had a soft ruby complexion of almost marble smoothness, and instead of twenty-three she really appeared but eigh teen. Upon inquiry as to the cause of so great a change, she plainly told them that she used the Circassian Halm, and considered it an invaluable acquisition to any Lady's toilet. By its use any Lady or Gentleman can improve their personal appearance an hundred fold. Y L2t3:ly A Cuul From The American Watch Company Of' Walt ham, Jfuix. rpilIS COMPANY BEU LEAVE TO IN I form the public that they com menced operations in 1850. and their factory now covers four acres of ground, and has cost more than a million dollars, and em ploys over Too operatives. Tl ey produce 75,000 Watches a year, and make and sell not less than one half of all the watches sold in the United States. The difference between their manufacture and t lie European, is briefly this: European Watches are made almost entirely by hand, and the result is of necessity a lack of that uniformity, which is indispensable to correct time-keeping. Both the eye and the hand of the most skillful operative must vary. But it is a fact that, except watches of the higher grades, Europeau watches are the product of the cheapest labor of Switzer land, and the result is the worthless Ancres, Lepmes and so called Pat.nt Levers which soon cost more in attempted repairs, than their original price. Common workmen, boys and women, buy the rough separate parts of these watches from various facto ries, polish and put them together, and take then) to the nearest watch merchant, who stamps and engraves them with any uame or brand that may be ordered. lloio American H atoties are Mane. The American Waltham Watch is made by no such uncertain proaess and by no such incompetent workmen. All the Com pany's operations, from the reception of the raw" materials to the completion of the Watch, are carried on under one roof, and under one skillful and competent direction. H'.t the great distinguishing feature of their Watches, is the fa'-tthat their several parts are all made by the finest, the most perfect and delicate machinery ever brought to the aid of human iudustry. Every one of the more than a hundred parts of every watch is made by a machine that infallibly repro duces every succeeding part with the most unvarying accuracy. It was only necessary to make one perfect watch of any particular style and then to adjust tho hundred man chines necessary to reproduce every part of that watch, and it follows th.1t every suc ceeding watch must be like it. The Company respectfully submit their watches on their merits only. They claim to make A Better Article for the Money by their improved mechanical processes than can be made under the old-fashioned handicraft system. They manufacture eveiy grade of watches, from a good, low priced and substantial article in solid silver huntng cases, to the finest chronometer and also ladies' watches in plain gold or the finest en ameled and jeweled cases; but the indispen sable requisite of all their watches is that they shall be good time keepers. It should be remembered that. except their single low est grade .named " Home Watch Company, BosUn," aU watches made by them are tuily warranted by a special certificate, and tliis warrantee is good at all times against the Company or its agents.
