Debating Clcb. We are requested to

men of Oregou City : Young un-a of

develop what little mental power nature
has given us. Let us quit ball -nayinc

knowledge is far away. m let us improve
our epring-tlme, and hasten to her goal.
I really think that when Oregon City iur
nishes so many unfledged lawyers and
O amateur theatrical performers. th:d she
certainly ought to maintain a debating so
ciety. ii'Miiember that within the walls of
the Jycenm Webster and Clay laid the
foundation for their distingni-hed car eer,
and that the great orators of to-day once
practiced in the village and country de
bating societies. Your advantages are no
V s. and your inconveniences no greater
than the';t's,so commence now and improve
each opportunity. It is a slur upon us
that we do not organize and keep up some
liind of a lyceum. when iu ev ery village
and in most of our rural districts the
young countrymen go for mile through
biorms ami night to attend. Xo wonder
that our rustic lads turn out to be our best
and smartest men when we compare their
Worts to our own. Now young men and
bovs in your teens, k-t us go to work with
a will. 'Commence at once and organize
oar society and keep it up until the long
nights cease, then a-ljonru until they come
again. 1 guess we can "bum' a room
somewhere in town, (perhaps the public
school room.) and then the only necessary
expense will be three or four candles per
night, and those who haven't got the
money to pay for them when it crimes their
turn, certainly have mot tiers good enough
to draw onelrom her candle moulds when
blie kind enough to furnish thetu with
money tgad about i play base b ill.

that the game between the Pioneers and

easier game at which the Willamettes could
play say. pins, or marbles They prob

not be the champions of the' State. The

that it arises Irom the 'fact that misery
