tatives of the Flowery Kingdom who ply
their nefarious vocation upon the princi
pal streets of Portland, and have long
proved a stench to the nostrils of respecta
ble folks, occasionally branch out into

much wonder that Portland is preferable
to their class. On Monday last two of the
abandoned women, and one rascally look-In-
whelp of the masculine gender, were
proper! v arraigned before Justice Moore,
who with his usual dispatch, sent them up
the man to work on the streets, and the
w-oiPa to await in j til. They have prob
ably learned by this time that to donned
yeh in the house of a capitalist, will not
guarantee them perfect security in their
criminal practices here.

gonian thus refers to one of a cumber of
pictures lately sent by us to the Art Gal
lery of V. T. Shamihan. Portland, for

braced strongly, and is sieered in horfl'ght
by a rudder twelve feet long." What a

latter gentleman will shortly leave for
San Francisco, to lay in a large winter
stock of goods.

ly furnished her owner with a ,'ine start in
her line, as she brought forth '.)S little pigs
in one litter. They were all alive. w hen
our informant saw them. Albany Journal.
That's nothing to speak of. The same
sow has since daily brought forth double
that number of pigs, each about the weight
of an ordinary stock hog.
TiE Basin. The basin extension at this
city has been built up from two to four
timbers higher, and filled with rock, mak
ing it one of the most extensive, massive,
and complete woiks of the kind in the
State, if not on the const. This hr.pregiia
blo breastwork now extends nearly to
Canemah, making it impossible for a boat
io get. out of tb' channel, as it is above
iigh water mark.

Carey Johnson, returned from Salem on
Wednesday. Last week we thought to
ask him how courting went, up at the cap
ital, in comparison to ? Ah. h-un ;
well, he says courting at Salem is of about
the same variety as in Oregon City. Here

fie and age of John G. Campbell. Esq., is
in the habit of frequently leaving upon,

old walks have become very unsafe, and

Oregon City is located upon the right
bank of the Willamette river, at what is
known as the Willamette Falls, and is des
tined to become a second Lowell or Law
rence, on account of Us natural water
power, which is second to nono in the
world.
The finest body of arable land upon the
Pacific slope, (the Willamette Valley,)
begins at a point but a few miles above
Oregon City, and is accessible by steameis
of 200 tons, and more, at all seasons. The
chief mart, (Portland), accessible by the
largest class of steamships and ocean pack
ets in genera! use, is but 12 miles below
us and midway between this latter place
and Oregon City, lies Oswego, the site of
the Oregon Iron Smelting Works, in the
heart of an inexhaustible iron mining re
region. There are at present, in Oregon City,
Woolen, Flouring. Paper, and Lumbering
Mil's, Wagon and Carriage manufactories,
Foundry and Boiler shops, Barrel and
Sack Factories, and yet but a mere fraction
of the space available to capital in such
pursuits, is tenanted.
We have at present no Banking" Houses
here, excepting the ollice of Wells, Fargo
& Company, through whom we are in daily
communication with Portland and San
Francisco.
There are no other Publications issued
ia Oregon City, at present. It may not be
without interest to you. however, for me
to state in this connection, that Oregon
City Is the oldest American settlement upon
the Pacific coast, and that the first printing
of newspapers executed upon the coast
was performed in this place, dating on
Thursday. February oth 1S15, by Mr. John
Fleming, who is still a resident of the city
and engaged in the book trade. The name
given this pioneer Journal was the Oregon
Spectator. The type, press and materials,
were owned by a company styled the
" Oregon Printing Association."

of Portland, and Mr. Al. P. Elicit, of the
firm of A. B. Eifelt & Co. Mr. Frazer has
proven himself, by his business qualified
to give good opinions upon industrial
subjects, and his judgment, with us, goes
a good ways. It is his idea that to day
Oregon presents better inducements, for
all classes of people, than any other part
of America, and hence v.'e must say no
place is to be compared to it. It is well
known to our readers that Mr. Eifelt is
about to leivethe State. lie leaves m
with many deep regrets. His long con
nection with business firms in Oregon h is
endeared him to very many people, in
deed, and were it not for the change that
has taken place in the style of his firm
doing business, on a more enlarged scale,
he would not go from Portland to remain.
BuiiNitn Out. We regret to learn, by a
private letter from Eev. John Howard, of
Tillamook, that on the Cth inst. his house
and all its contents, were destroyed bv fire,
This loss leaves his family without a house
and destitute of clothing. Those who
know the circumstances of Mr. Howard
will see the necessity of sending him aid
immediately. To be burned out. in a new
neighborhood, with a wife and children, is
a much greater calamity than to meet with
a similar loss in an old' settlement. Rev.
W. I. Cosper. of this city, will attend to
forwarding anything that may be contrib
uted for the relief of Ihe family. Any ar
ticle in tho line of clothing, or that may
be useful in the house, would be received
thankfully.
Festivals. Within the space of ten
days three festivals have been held at the
Court House in this city. The first, given
as a benefit, by tl e ladies to the Clackamas
Base Ball Club, is spoken of as being a
very pleasant affair. On Monday even
ing the pupils of the select school of Miss
Harvey gave a supper, and retted a
handsome sum to be devoted to the pur
chase ot a piano. Last evening the la
dies gave a benefit to the Congregational
Church. The only fault we have to find,
in respect to all ot this is with our humble
pelf business has prevented our attend
ance at any of the gatherings, although
we have been ticketed to each such is
the life of an Editor, who 53 Printer.

Pewter Coin We were caught the other
day ia endeavoring to get rid of a pewter
half probably some of the late Portland
mint production and while the boys'"
thought they had a good joke on us. we
turned asid'e to consider the subject.
Counterfeits are no new thing. So long
ago as live hundred years before Chrit,
Greek and Koman coins were counterfeit
ed, and some of the counterfeits have come
down to the prcseut day. But it is doubt
f ill if there were ever so many counterfeits
as now, not of money alone, but of nearly
everything we use.
F:::e. On Saturday morning last, at an
early hour, the dry house of Mr. T. Bart
let t, on the west side, was discovered to
b on fire. It contained several hundred
pounds of" fruit, in various stages of pres
ervation, but the fire soon destroyed it ail,
together with two plows that had been
put away for further use. Mr. Bartlett is
engaged in rebuilding, and probably next
week wili go on with his operations as
usual.
Wells. This part of Christendom Las
partly gone wild over the question of
water, if we are to judge by the excava
tions in an around the city, after water.
Besides the works of the Water Company
Mr. D. J. S'over has several contracts for
wells, one of which at Green Point goes
through quick sand lor a distance of near
ly fiSty feet.
