eased. A disturbance seems brought
nbout by mismanagement in its culti
vation, which has been repeated, and
si anniented continually, from its first
introduction to tho present time, and
idihough this tuber ii exceeding!)' te
nacious of life, we still succeed iu pro
ducing meager crops, some part of

yet the whole race is affected, and if
we do not adopt measures so as to
assist nature to regain her power, the
potatoe will eventually be lost to
mankind. Nature allows a consider
able margin for casualties and indis
crelions, but she will not forever be
trifled with. A practical farmer in
Jasper county, Idrwa? Jas. Warren,
who has been familiar with potatoe
culture about 43 years, in various
countries and climates of both hemis
pheres, says :
"My earliest recollections are that
most of the plants bore clusters of
seed balls, and some of them did not,
which shows that the disturbance was
progressing even then, but not far
enough advanced to cause much of a
damage. The later varieties raised
Je9s seed than the early kind, simply
because the preceding generation had
been prematurely cut down by frost
in Autumn, and from that tme there
has been a gradual decrease, until of
bite years a cluster of seed balls is a
novelty. Now, the potatoe being in
character hermaphrodite, it is the in
tention of nature that each blossom
should fructify itself, and others near
by it that each plant should bear
and mature seed to perfect ripeness.
Either tig seed or the tubers is then
in a fit condition to propagate, and
not otherwise for there is a sympa
thetic action going on, between and
jrj the seed, the tubers, and all other
parts of trie plants during the process
f elaboration and assimdation of
the vital principle in their proper
proportion'--, which is to insure to
both seed and tiu;er the ability to
transmit a perfect organism to the
next generation. It this natural pro
cess is frustrated in-a small decree,
the organism must be imperfect, and
although a tribe of tubers may carry
on the wrk of reproduction for a

their vitality must at

ground to be dug up at the time of

record or even third growths or

Generally no selection is made for
the next year's sets. Those not sold

ones left for seed which is wrong.
Choose the best known variety w hich
has the quality of maturing in a mod
erately short time. Take it uuder
your especial care. Plant it either
for Summer or Winter use the dif
terenee being only in the time of put
ling it in the grolind, which your best
judgment should dictate. Now be
cartful not to disturb the roots, after
blossoming. When the vines are ri

riety, and reject all others. Let them

they will be secure from moisture,

-two years yon will be astonished at
your success in reclamation. It is
not too late, perhaps, to begin this
selecting process in the year ls07,and
the matter is earnestly recommended.
As you care for Nature, so will she
care for you. Carry out her designs

ward you. By persevering in the
manner above indicated, a few years
will be sufficient to give the potatoe
its primitive health and vigor every
