Or, if you hold title derived from or through the original locator, our advice is : see to it that the Patent is issued, and properly re corded. Many people, indeed we may say people generally, suppose that a duplicate receipt is a sufiieient title. It should be known that the duplicate; as it generally called, is not evidence even of a legal title from the government until the act'of issuing the duplicate receipt is confirmed by the Commissioner of tlie G' ener.il Land office at Washington, the title of the gov ernment has not passed, and it is aot un frequent that entries of years standing have been and are being canceled. Hence we can give no better advice to our pat rons than to say, save your homes aud your family from the liability of trouble, by securing your patents before adverse claims arise. It will prove far cheaper to employ some person familiar with the business to procure the issuance of the i'atcnt. than to de.end asramst an adver se claim, even though you succeed in sus taining vour title. Fjcsxe Mixdkd. There are to bo found in all coramunities men who, themselves unfortunate in business, or " out of luck," curse that community to the bitter end. Others seek revenge for ill success bv pub lishing their abusive falsehoods to the world through newspapers. Tho St. Paul Pioneer lately gave its readers one of the most chari'Cteristic letters of this class of men (a returned Minncsotian from Oregon) that we have ever seen.. It was false irom the beginning to the end and its author must certainly have known it, when en gaged in his cheap business. Oregon can not guarantee prosperity to every worth less man who may happen to be "cast up like driftwood here. But she can oiler ys many advantages for men with willing hand3 as any State Jn the Union. The Gamks. Four games of Base Ball were played in this city on Thursday last. Those between the Pioneers and Claka inas Club netting runs. Next tho Wide Awake Club of Portland played the Second Nine of the Clackamas Club, five innigs, the net runs being 71. Next the Highlanders played the f umwater Club nine innings, winning the game by I!) runs, the total runs on both sides amount ing to S7. The Juveniles then played each other in the evening, but we have no report. CELEnitATiox at Rock Cuss;:. The Sab bath School Celebration at Rock Creek, was a pleasant affair. Hon. J. W. What Was Wanted ov :Em. Some of our co'emporurios are uneasy, in their anxiety to know what the people of Ore gon City wanted of those Indians, brought back here. The sex was principally fe male. They were wanted to do washing and otherwise wait upon modern Ameri can women amongst us, who are wives mothers, and in expectation. ITeaui) From. At the conclusion of the base ball games pn Thursday, in this city, the bats, wickets and ball for a genuine old fashioned game of Cricket were brought out. The play attracted great attention. Mr. Thomas Charman finally securely housed the ball inside the base drum, soon after which general practice terminated. Needs Repairs. Whoever the business belongs to, ought to repair the upper end of the Clackamas bridge. A reasonable sum would fix a defect now, which, if left, may cost hundreds. This bridge belongs to the county now, and it cannot be ex pected that the old proprietor will keep it in repairs for the people. Co.mixg. The pip.' for the street mains of the Oregon City Water Works Company were ordered to come along as speedily as possible. The preparatory work for erecting the reservoir, on tho bluff, is progressing fully. Main street will have ten hydrants. Won't that be healthy for a warm. day. Oukgox Leather Uorkectiox. Tn the new advertisement of Mr. Thomas Arm strong, of the Milwaukie tannery, we ac cidentally made quite an error in the prices at which he furnishes leather. The list appears correct to-day. Read his ad vertisement. Caricature. Tho Columbia Press asks us what part Colfax performed on that " charicature of Oregon"' which Richard son posted up in the Metropolitan at New York. We venture to assert that Colfax had nothing to do with it. He never lends himself to dirty trickery of any sort. Saxpwiched. The weather clerk fixed our Fourth of July just right this year. It was nicely sandwiched between two days of thin mist, which greatly accelerated all nature. Clackamas Wooe. "We have a visit in con templation for that pari of the county soon, when we shall be prepared to speak farther of these improvements. The house will cost about S5.000. Advertisixu. In relation to advertising Horace Greeley has credit for giving ut terance to the homely truth that the trader who pays more shop rent than advertising, don't know his business. It may seem to be putting it very strong, but it is nevertheless too true, "it is a settled fact that he who has succeeded has been a lib eral advertiser while on the other hand those who have failed in business, have not, as a rule, been in the habit of adver tising their business.
