Mamixa Fai-ek. On Tuesday last the
I Oregon City Paper Manufacturing Compa-
; iiv started their machinery on the produc-
f ii.m of manilla paper, which, like the
previfJUH productions of this mill, is vastly
Miperior to any thai can be purchased else
where for the same money. There has
been an impression abroad that the paper
mill was running short handed. This is a
mistake. With the exception of the O. 0.
Woolen Mills, which is running but half of
the looms, all the machinery in this city is
being pressed to its full capacity with a
demand for more. The Taper Company
employ two full changes of hands, and run
their works night and day. On Tuesday
we found Mr. Wortrnan preparing 1200
reams for shipment to San Fraucisco by
the next steamer, being a duplicate of an
order that had gone forward by the Ori
ibtmme. The Company have on hand 3500
reams of straw paper, and hope within the
next week to have a stock of manilla suffi
cient to keep in advance of orders. The
prices at present ruling are : for straw
wrapping 1 o) ; ream ; manilla, 20 c. "r3
lb., the average being 10 lbs ream.
Lawks' Faik. Masonic Hall in this city
was the scene of a fine display of fancy
goods, and articles usually contributed to
make a successful Fair, when prepared by
fair hamlsQjon Thursday evening last.
Tjfe occasion was a benefit given in aid of
St. Paul's Chapel. We were present for
sOaie little time, aud feel that our duty
compels us to say that considering the
brief interval for .preparation, the commit
tees did creditable work. Miss M. II. was
;-q etticient as door-keeper; Miss F. II. was a
I credit to the kitchen ;' Miss L. M. and
Miss A. ( afforded excellent amusements
' in their department of "grab;" Misses 13.,
1 T. and , had some of the choicest bou
quets for sale and realized handsomely;
OMrs. E P. was a capital clerk, in the fancy
goods line, and Miss A. J., officiating as
clerk in the Post Office, proved her profi
ciency, notwithstanding letters" were oc
easionuly delivered to the wrong persons.
For instance: we found with regret that
an affectionate epistle, no doubt intended
for our friend J . 1). L., had been opened
by us, and the secrets contained therein
"published" before the error was apparent.

announcement of the death of Mrs. Robert
Newell, the Lewiglon Journal says : ''De
ceased was born in Iowa, emigrated to
the Pacific coast in 1X15, lived a long
time in Oregon and recently came from
there with her husband and family," in
tending to make a permanent residence in
Idaho. She leaves seven children one an
infant. llc-iOfuneral obsequies were per
formed on Monday the 20th hist. A. W.
Sweeney delivered the discourse, and her
remains were interred in the city ceme
tery. The death of this estimable woman
wiiile iP has brought' affliction to her
bereaved family, has caused deep sor
row to the entire community. A hus
band has been deprived of the aid and
solace "of a faithful and affectionate wife.
A family of children of whom many are
voting ami helpless, have lost a "kind
ani) indulgent mother, and society an hon
ored ami respected member ; but we
cannot but feel that what is their loss
is her gain, as she died in the firm convic
tion of redemption through the atonement
of our Lord Jesus."
Anotiteil Qr.wnir. A limestone quarry,
fays the Jlecord, has been discovered by
Frank Cooper, at the mouth of Beaver
creek, or Butte creek, in Clackamas countv.

Such a discovery is of great importance,
h.s the existence of lime-tone in large
quantities has not been before established.
The lime for the University was in part
made from limestone found in that vicinity,
hru Frank thinks he has found the main
deposit. We hope he has ami that it will
d ;hi;f? some good. 1 Us enterprise and en
ergy in prospecting the mountains deserves

The Tetjcghaph. Foremost among the
wonders of this age of marvels stands the
electric telegraph. We feel justly proud
of an invention so peculiarly American,
but, as Mark Twain would say, it is the
" darndest thing"' out, after all. It is in

oh newspapers ! ! I If we could only be
lightning about ten minutes we'd rip it
from the earth ! you bet, we would. Here
we have got a nice, full, reliable, and com
paratively late file of Eastern papers but
to go back over them and review the
hashed and befooled dispatches of corre
sponding dates, would only take up our
time, and till up our pages" without pay Ur
ourself or readers it would be a dish
warmed over, but no doubt would tast-
better, cold, than the flashes we have al
ready printed, yet who is to decide ? We
recollect once blessing the name of Cyrus
W. Field ! We stuck his portrait over our
writing desk there it is we looked upon
him as the originator and true contriver
of a bond of peace more potent and en
during than anything that Statesmanship
couTd contrive, or that even patriotism
could suggest. This was at a time when
everybody was in the justifiable ecstacies
of joy that " that girdle' wassoon to be
put around the world in " 40 minutes,"
that we all should have prompt intelli
gence, and, though costly, yet invaluable
saving legitimate trade and defeating
roguery. At a time when the prayers of
the Godly closed with a sincere aspiration
that the liuler of the winds and the waves
would take under His care and guardian
ship the long-wished for means of instan
taneous communication with our brothers
of the Eastern Hemisphere, hailing it as
the inauguration of the reign of Peace on
earth, good Avill towards men." Put
with us now all that is passed it was
very fine like an old liamage" it did it
duty in its day, but in order to meet the
justification and make amends for gross
neglect, were we paying $500 per month
for the privilige, as some of our friends do,
we would advocate grappling the nuisance
at both ends, and demand an immediate
explanation of why it is that so few intel
ligible dispatches reach Oregon ?
Daily IIkcokd. Our fellow-craftsman,
and late Editor of the Argus in this city,
I). W. Craig Esq., has started a little daily
with the above head to it at Salem.
Among the list of principles w hich are to
govern the Jlecord, we find the "following.
which we endorse : ' We plainly state that
our intention is to iurnish a good local
paper for the people of Salem, irrespec
tive of politics. There has always been
too much of that article dished up for
common use, and the public digestion has
not been improved by it. c desire the
people to understand that in sentiment
we favor Union principles. We recognize
the right of persons to differ from us in
belief, though we don't see how they con
scientiously can do so. The reward of
newspaper-men lies in their success, and;
intending to deserve success, we respect
fully invite everybody to lend us a hand.''
Good Tkaii'lar's Documents We are in
receipt of a tract upon the cider question,
from the pen of James Black, Esq., Grand
Worthy Chief Templar of Pennsylvania.
It is not written with a view to iind ex
cesses for the indulgences of Good Temp
lars in sweet cider decoctions, but on the
other hand, proves conclusively that the
use of cider by any member is a violation
of the obligation. . . . A " Manal or exposi
tion'' of the order of Good Templars,
written by S. P. Chase, author of the Di
gest, is -also before us. The work em
braces the historyr. object and workings of
the Order, and was prepared under a reso
lution of the P. W. G. I j. Members will
find these works of service to them.
BoryuKTs. We are under many obliga
tions to Mrs. L. Diller, for a truly beauti
ful bouquet of the fairest, and freshest,
and choicest flowers. They have embel
lished our sanctum for several days, and
yet seem blooming, which, considering
that we are for the time being " alone,"'
not as Jeff. Davis wished to be. but as
Scriptures say we ought not to be, (Gen.
ii. PS..) such a present is the more ac
ceptable. We would also tender our thanks to
Misses Mollie and Frank Holmes, Miss
Ilensley and Miss Moss, for their kind
favor on Thursday morning.
Sunk axd Raised. The steamer Active
with a very heavy freight on board, ran
upon a snag near Peoria, on last Sunday,
and made a hole info her hull, sufficiently
large to sink her. This news being tele
graphed to Oregon City, Capt. Pease
started up Monday morning with the JJcho
having on board appliances to raise her.
b ut she reached her dock without material
injury. Maybe Congress thinks an ap
propriation for improving the navigation
of this river unnecessary, but the P. T.
Company do not.
Convict IIetvkxei). On last Thursday
Deputy- Sheriff Deal of Sacramento, passed
through town en route for Salem with
llifalutin Aug. White, convicted about
one year ago for bigamy, and who, after
about six weeks imprisonment, escaped.
Sheriff Deal found his highness In Califor
nia, and the opportunity to snuff a little
Oregon air, aud receive a bonus for the
trip, was too good a hand to pass.
Match Game of Base Bai.i.. On Monday-
at 1 o'clock r. m. the steamer Alert
will leave Oregon City for Portland, tak
ing all passengers who may be desirous of
witnessing the Match Game of Base Ball
on that day between the Clackamas and
Pioneer clubs. After the game has been
played the same steamer will return to
this city- under charter of the Clackamas
Club. Fare for the round trip has been
placed at Si, only.
Roads. The Road Supervisors are busy
with their ofiicial duties throughout the
county, and the roads are being improved
in many places, but whether for any per
manent good, is doubtful. Such l road
work"' as we have in times past had here
might as well not be done. AVhat is
wanted is good, systematic work. Get
ready first, and then properly make some
improvement every year.
Returned. We are pleased to hear
that Mr. J. C. Gardner, inventor of the
Oregon Shackel, has made money out of
his patent and returned to Oregon. - The
State never more than half paid him for
his valuable services when here, but by
this invention he is " ahead of the hounds'
Body RECovEUEix-Tbe remains of young
Eisgrau, lately drowned at Harrisburg,
were recovered on Sunday, and on last
"Wednesday passed through to Portland in
charge of friends of the deceased. We
understand the remains will be forwarded
east for final interment.
Where is it ? The newspaper fraternity
are bound to keep Fort Phil. Kearney in
in the shade. A few weeks ago we thought
we knew just where it was. but now, hav
ing seen so many different explanations of
its locality darned if we do!
