o o o o o 0 o o o o o o o o O t ORIGINAL -"tT- - .... - DEFECT1V 0 o It We Knew." If we knew the woe and heart-ache Waiting for us down the road, If our Hps could taste the wormwood, If our backs could feel the load, Would we waste the day in wishing For a time that ne'er can be ? Would w e wait in such impatience For our ships to come from sea? If we knew the baby fingers Pressed against the window pane Would be cold and stiff" to-morrow Never trouble us again Would the bright eyes of our darling Catch the frown upon our brow ? : Would the print of rosy fingers Tex usthen as they do now? Ah, those little ice-cold fingers, How they point our memories back To the hasty words and actions Strewn along our backward track ! How those little hands remind us, As in snowy grace thev lie, Hot to scatter thorns but rosea For our reaping by and by ! Strange we never prize the music Till the sweetvoiced bird has flown ; Strange that we should slight the violets Till the lovely flowers are gone ; Strange that Summer skie3 and sunshine Never seem one-half so fuir As when Winter's snowy pinions Shake the white down in the air ! Lips from which the seal of silence None but God can roll away Never blossomed in such beauty As adorns the mouth to-day ; And sweet words that freight our memory With their beautiful perfume, Come to us in sweet accents, Through the portals of the tomb. Let us gather up the sunbeams Lying all along our path ; Let us keep the wheat and roses, Casting out the thorns and chaff" ; Let us fiud our sweetest comfort In the blessings of to-day, With a patient hand removing All the briars from our way. pendicularly. putting the outer branches into this position by trellis trimming ; conservation of foliage by not removing young shoots ; by air and light ; bv con tinued cuts lengthwise into the rind on each side, and at the places where off shoots take effect; by cutting above a healthy bud ; by the suppression of fruit ; by long, but moderate trimming. Second Branches which are too vigor ous must be -weakened by bending ; by the wavy curve ; by the removal .of the branch buds: by the temporary with- drawal of air and light; by cutting above a poorly developed bud ; by the short cut ; by removal of the young shoots ; by trimming while the foliage is on. . Third The treatment of the small branches or shoots. The annual trimming of the branches gives equal life to all the buds thereon; the alternate, perpen dicular and varying direction of branches suffices to afford equal life to all buds, and to prevent the necessity of trimming it off entirely in time. The sap. which circulates in the outer, hanging down branches of a tree, will favor the buds upon the extremities, and neglect those nearer the stem. The general deduction from the above being that we should try to secure fruit branches each year ; while not over looking the life ot the numernual short ening of the wood branches and sprouts to one half or two thirds ; the removal of the buds upon the outer extremes ; trimming above feeble buds and above the crown of the tree ; breaking off the points of sprouts and the removal of more than six leaves above buds that have formed. Frcmxo Fruit Trees. The following rules for the trimming of fruit trees, are worthy of consideration : A young healthv tree, if left to itself, at first produces only wood, first period of vegetation the wood gradually slackens, and the pre paration for the production of fruifc de velops itself. A surplus of san favors the growth of After this growth of wood at the expense of the fruit ; per contra, scantiness of sap increased the production of fruit to the detriment of the growth of wood. In healthy trees, not too old, the sap tends rather to the surface of the stem and branches, than to the interior parts. The branches which shoot upward, thrive with more force than those which grow in an horizontal or bending posi tion. The greater the bend the lesser the annual growth of the branches, which, therefore, become feeble. Where branches, enfeebled as above, have offshoots in an ascending position, these acquire new vigor and strength. Branches which grow horizontally, on one side, thrive with greater vigor than those which grow in curves. Other vegetating conditions being equal, we may assume that branches thrive in proportion to the leaves they bear. The more exposed to air and light are the branches, the greater the rapiditv and vigor of their growth. The vigor of the shoots on the branches indicates the degree of future" growth and strength. -G Th stronger, the healthier, and the riper is the bud above which the wood is cut in trimming, the more vigorous will be the shoot it will put forth. The removal of the end of a branch invigorates it, when untrimraed and left to their natural growth, the branches dry up and die. The annual trimming, if too great, in jures the wood, producing knots and puffs on the branches, and diminishing the flow of the sap. Trimming strengthens the branches, which become weak if allowed to grow too long. The more fruit a branch bears, the less it will thrive. Pinching off the young shoots and trimming, while the tree is in foliage, greatly retards the vigorous growth of the branches. """" Trimming the outer branches too little, entirely prevents or at least greatly re tards the development of new branches.. On the ascending and on the little inclined branches only the buds at the upper end develop themselves well ; those further back mostly languish. On branches with offshoots, those near est the stem are favored in their growth, while the more distant ones remain fee ble and weak. Upon branches not subjected to trim ming, and which are trained alternate ly in ascending and curving direction, so that they form a waving line, all buds thrive with nearly equal ease and vigor. In kernel fruit trees, breaking out and trimming encourages the setting ot fruit. In stone fruit trees, the little branches -produce fruit as indefinitely as with ker nel fruit trees." In these rules lies the whole art of trimming fruit trees. The life of all fruit trees divides itself into , two.de tinate pe riods. First into the period of fruit, bar renness and srrowth ; next into that of fruit productions and dying off. Between growth and productions is a third mo ment, that of the prime of fruit tree life. The bifsiness of the trimmer is to step in with a view to secure, in the future life of the tree, not only a favorable equilibrium between these two forces, but also to prevent their waste. Much sap makes wood, little sap produces fruit; this is the completing idea of this task. The younger and stronger a tree is the more the sap tends to the surface of the stems. The sap flows most strong lv toward the ascending branches, and this flow is retarded by bending them. The ascending shoots or branches pro mote their vegetating powers. Sap cir culates freer in perpendicular than in -curving branches. Other things being equal, branches have the more vigor the mavo, foliage there is upon them. Sap flows especially into those branches which are most exposed to light and air. The A Powerfix Fertilizer. Every farm er has soot at command, whose presence in stovepipes or chimneys is not unfre quently th cause of fires, occasioning the loss sometimes of both property and life. This agent for evil is one of the most valuable manures, and nothing but the most culpable carelessness and indiffer ence will suffer it to remain a standing menace to life and property when it can be easily removed and turned to good account in the field or garden. Twelve quarts of soot in a hogshead of water will make a powerful liquid manure, which will improve the growth of flowers, gar den vegetables, or root crops. In either a liquid or solid state, it makes an ex cellent top dressing for grass or cereal crops. Sharp. A man in Connecticut obtain ed a winter's supply of excellent pota toes in the following eule manner: He gave out word he was desirous of ob taining a specimen of the best sort of potatoes, and would pay throe dollars for a peck of such, himself to judge. Potatoes poured into his cellar from all the country round, and when the aval anche had subsisted, the man handed over his three doll irs for the best peck, and thu next spring sold potatoes enough to more than cover the original out lay, besides having liad a first quality article for home use all the winter. " Oxe of tue Bovs.' A youngster came home after having a glorious time in the puddles, his face all aglow, and his rubber boots full of water. The punishment of staying in the house for the remainder of the day did not seem very hard at first ; but as his little heart warmed up with the recollection of the triumphs of the morn ing, when he had waded deeper than any of his playmates dared to. he could bear the restraint no longer, and went to his mother, saying : Please, mother, whip me, and let me go out again ?" A Southern Yiew of Bilk Pomert. The Mobile correspondent of the Mont gomery Advertiser says, with excellent good sense : " I had a glimpse of the far famed Brick Poixieroy, but did not have the pleasure of hearing him 'lecture.' I do not much regret it, however, for I look upon 'Brick' as something of a humbug, and believe his lectures and letters are in jurious to the South ; besides, ho makes our ' oppressed people pay to hear him tell how badly he was treated." Hard ox tue Moxkev. Prof. Agassiz, in a recent lecture, remarked : " The monkeys of South America were far in ferior to those of the east. Eastern mon keys were found so nearly approaching the human species, that some naturalists had discovered an advantage on the part of the monkey." . Kexo. The following is a Dutchman's definition of the game of "Keno," now so fashionable : '; Dat ish a leedle games von all der fellers sets round mit der dables, and put puttons on pasteboard cards mit figgers on 'em. and don't say some dings already, and den by-ancl-by one feller he says, ' Genoo." and den all dem udder fel lers say, ' Oh hell!' Boilixg by Friction.'- The Boston Jour nal says that recently an egg was placed in a vessel of cold water, which was made to revolve 2i2 times a minute. The egg was boiled in six minutes, the only heat being the friction of the water. Concise Style."
