Always Love.
Because Lore's sigh is but a sigh, -Doth
it the less Love's heart disclose?
Because the rose mu!t fade and die,
Is it the less the lovely rose ?
Because black night must shroud the day.
Shall the brave sun no more be gay ?
Because chili autumn frights the birds,
Shall we distrust that spring will come ?
Because sweet words are only words,
Shall Love forevermore be dumb ?
Because our bliss is fleeting bliss,
Shall we who love forbear to kiss?
Because Uiose eyes of gentle mirth
Must sometime cease my heart to thrill ;
Because the sweetest voice ou earth
Sooner or later must be still ;
Because its idol is unsure,
Shall my strong love the less endure ?
Ah no ! let lovers breathe their sighs.
And roses bloom, and music sound,
And passion burn on lips and eyes,
And Pleasure's merry world go round ;
Let golden sunshine flood the sky,
And let me love, or let me die !
A Dkaw Bkiikjk Across the Willam
ette. A scheme is on foot in this city
says the Oregonian of Saturday, to con
struct a draw-bridge across the Willam
ette, connecting this shore with the high
land at East Portland. We were, yester
day shown a draft of the proposed struct
ure, together with : a profile view of the
river' bottom, surveyed from the foot of
Stark street. The survey was made by
$Ir. T. It. Brook, Civil Engineer, San
Francisco. The drawings show a length
of 1.4G1 feet, with six spans, including
the pivot draw." The estimates and speci

Shipping in Bulk. j
Speaking of a much needed reformer
in the grain trade, the-- Alta says : We
are, informed that parties, have it in con
templation to build grain warehouses in
this city, provided with elevators similar
to those used at the grain marts in Chica
go and Buffalo, for loading and unload
ing cargoes of wheat and barley in bulk.
It is to be hoped nothing may interfere
to prevent the realization of this pro
ject. The saving to the farmers and
grain-dealers will be immense when we
once reach the point of shipping all
our grain exports in bulk. The surplus
wheat of 18b'G was, say 4,500.000 hundred
and twenty pound sacks. The cost of
each sack to the farmers was about twenty
two cents, or a total of $000,000. This
was a dead loss to the farmers. It will
be at least a fourth greater, or $1,237,
500 for the present year. When wheat
is worth $2 per hundred the farmers can
stand this discount, but when it conies
down to $li or $1 1-5 Western rates
in a full harvest they cannot stand it.
All the grain of the 'West, and of Rus
sia, is shipped in bulk. We must adopt
the same plan or we cannot count up
on successful and regular competition in
the markets of Europe and the Eastern
States. It will require a remodelling of
our river steamers which do the bulk
of the interior carrying-trade ; but the
saving in sacks tor a single, year, and in
the cost of handling the grain, would
more than build the necessary ware
houses and new vessels. We had just as
well do this thing now as postpone it.
Sooner or later it must be done. Grain
is our staple In less than a decade
our average surplus wheat crop will
be from thirty to forty millions of bush
els; worth as many millions of dollars,
and we can't afford to discount from
twelve to fifteen per cent, of this amount
each year in a waste of backs.
hoard measure : cost. $149,012 SjS. This
sum. it is st.ited. is the price at which
a responsible linn of San
wiliin'' to take a contract.
at liberty to state at present, what steps
have been taken or what may soon be
;lone in the matter ; but we can say
that decisive measures will be adopted
as oo:i as .tae preliminary alfairs shall
-be "settled. The CviCge proposed is pre
cisely such an one except as to length,
as the -Yolo bridge at Sacramento. That
:has seven piers built ou piling, very
Leavily timbered ; four spans of 147 feet
eaeti in the Clear oi piers; ooo nuu
draw of ICS feet 0 'inches in length; to-
th of bridge S01 feet : the roa'd-
1!) feet in the clear. The cost
'for spans was $78 per foot ; cost of draw.
$97 per foot. It was built several years
ago, w hen material and labor were much
higher than now. Mr. II. R. Leonard,
civil engineer an I bridge builder, ot
Sacramento, estimates that he can build
a good wooden bridge now of the same
width for $100 per foot. At that price
the proposed bridge here, would cost $87,-
.Sld. ; but the cost of material a id labor
being less here than in California: it is
quite probable that a much less sum,
say $(i0.000, may be made to complete
the bridge. It is to be ardently hoped
' that the enterprise will be undertaken
and carried to completion at an early
day.
Garden- Seeds. It is proposed that the
American Institute Club co-operate to have
foreign garden seeds admitted free of duly.
Plain farmers will be astonished to learn
that our people are such a miserable set
of wretches that we import tuns of garden
seeds every year from Europe. Seedsmen
tell us that we get better seeds than are
grown here ; but when we ask them to
name the kinds, they mention flower seeds,
and perhaps peas. To a great extent the
seeds distributed by the Agricultural De
partment are imported, as though we were
colonists and had only commenced farm
ing. A farmer's IS year old boy, in talk
ing with his old daddy about what crops
th.ey would raise, said they had better not
sow any of this or .any of that, because
ihey could buy it cheaper. -; Very good,"7
says the old man. - but what are you go
ing to pay with."' The young chap had
not thought so far, and was silent. In
Laraum s old .Museum there used to be a
letter hung in a frame, from George Wash
ington to his gardener, who had requested
liim to send him some garden seeds. George
did not like the idea at all, but he sent
some, and concluded in nearly these words:
This will be the last time ; and I want
you to understand that I cannot be eter
nally buying you garden seeds7
Propagation ot' Root Plants. Root
plants- are freely grown from small pic-res
of roots cut from the parent plant. We
think few amateurs are aware how easily
Ihey may increase their stock of raspber
ries, blackberries, or of seedling peats, ap
ples, quinces, Ac., by simple pieces of the
roots. Early in spring, dig the earth away
carefully from around the tree or plant
that you wish to propagate j then, with a
sharp knife", cut from thy roots pieces of
from an inch to three inches long : take
them to a piece of well prepared ground,
raked smooth on top ; lay them on it, at
distances of Irom three to six inches apart;
cover with an' inch deep of clean sand, and
thou about two inches of peat muck, or
light rotten leaf mold. Nearly every piece
oi root will grow, and in the fall present
you g'ood strong plants.

The Fikst in the Makket. Since the
acquisition by our Government of Russian-America,
the attention of many of
our people has been attracted that way,
ah I several of our acquaintances have
expressed a determination to migrate
thitherward during the summer. We no
tice, however, that while many are think
ing and talking, Messrs. Allen & Lewis
are acting. A lot of goods, consisting of
flour, dried fruit, soap, wrapping paper,
etc., from their house, was placed on
board the Fiddlier yesterday says the
Oregonki.t of sa'urdav. marked O P,

shipment of goods to reach Sitka from
any point'in the United States, tince the
territory changed owners.
A G"eat Plough. The great Fowler
steam plow has been in successful use in
England for the last ten years, and is capa
ble, in all kinds of weather, of going
thoroughly over an acre of ground every
hour of the day. The plow, which is at
Xew Orleans, was constructed at a cost of
about 2.500 sterling, and was sent over
here for the purpose of being tested on
the immense plantations on the banks of
the Mississippi.

Ty earning How to Do It. The Oregon
ians have had a hard experience In learn
ing how to prcpiar their products for
shipment, and many articles of really
superior quality have been oftentimes
driven out of the California markets, for
no other reason than that they were not
in lit shape to oner for sale. Good Bacon,
for instance, has often gone begging
buyers at reduced prices, where Califor
nia bacon no better really, but nicely
prepared, has sold at good figures. All
this is being remedied in these latter
days. Our people are learning, at last
f-ays the Oreijonian, that appearances in the
California, markets, go for about as much
as genuine merit, and are acting ac-.-coieisgly.
We are led. to make these re
marks from noticing of late, packages
of bacon, half 5'arrels of dried apples,
salmon raid many other articles, put up
in very neat and inviting style, for ship
ment to San Francisco. Oregonians have
many things yet to learn before they can
ginto every market on terms of equal
ity with all other localities ; but they
are notably improving, and evidently
.on the road to knowing '-how to do it.-'7
