The Alfa has an article upon the treatment of wool, and shearing sheep which contains some useful suggestions, in addition to what has already been given in the Ex tkrpkisk. We quote: "Certain fanners having a wrong idea of the influence of the condition of Iheir Wools in regard to prices, we annex a little calculation, show ing the actual relative value of prices and condition : 1.00') clean Wools bought at makes $220 ; loss by scouring 3. "ft cent., (the least can be lost in wools in the grease,) gives C.oO lbs. of washed wools, and will then cost 33 84-l00c. lb. Wools bought at 20c., losing 40 $ cent., will cost 3:Jic, lb. washed ; bought at lSic, losing 4" cent., will cost 3.1 03 lditc; bought at 17c. losing 50 f cent., will cost 3 bought at 13c., losing (i0 cent., will cost 33 75-loOc. This shows that a factory paying 22c. for clean wools, cannot pay over 13c. for heavy wools of the same quality. The farmer, therefore, ought to take the best care of his wool and sheep, as the good conditioned Wool will always sell readily. Serious complaints are made this year by the fae-tories in ref erencs to certain flocks whicl have been tarred. For instance, a fanner has one thousand fleeces, all mare or less tarred, and when this wool goes to the factory, all the tarred ends have to be clipped by hand, causing a great expense and loss to the manufacturers. Lurry wools can sometimes be cleaned by machinery, but tar cannot be removed in this mariner. Another serious complaint, and one which must be avoided, is shearing a sheep twice over at the same shearing, or reciipping where the shearer has already passed over. This wool, so clipped over is a great detri ment in manufacturing, and all wools in which these clippings, or frih.it, as they are called, are found are of much less value to manufacturers. Another very serious complaint is made about the short ness of the staples of certain clips. Some farmer."! have shorn late hist fall, and had to shear early this spring before the alfiar illo and clover burrs ripen. The result is that the staple of their wool does not ex ceed or d" an inch, and is unfit for manufacturing purposes. If (he wool raisers have to shear in the fall for the health of their flocks, they should provide proper means so as to allow at least eight months' growth for the good condition of the spring clip."' A Goon Ixvkntiox. Mr. J. W. Lewis, of this city, has purchased the right for Clackamas county for a splendid inven tion, which, although a blacksmith himself, is recommended by him to the owners of vehicles, us saving considerable expense in the setting of tires. Jt is claimed by the inv entors. I). J. Kirkman and L. II. Gray, of Winchester. Scott county, Illinois, that by the aid of this improvoui"nt wheels can be kept so adjusted that they will wear twice as long-as with the old plan. Their process for tightening the tire, is neat and durable, and so constructed that any per son can tighten or loosen the tires on a vehicle without removing the wheels from tin .xles, in twenty minutes time Mr. Lewis will furnish circulars explaining the process, or show t lie lire in use, upon ap plication. The invention is described as follows : The tin? is parted in one place and in the two ends lodes are drilled, into which lit a double-end right and left screw, which being turned one way tightens the tire, and turned the other loosens it. Where this part of the tire comes, a section of the felloe is cut out to make room for (he nuts and screws, and the cavity thus made is filled on the inner and outer side by a clasp arrangement secured b-y screws.
