Prof. Ajjaiz has called at ention to the fact tlt Gt'-crjogy is net yet made a part of oat elementary education. The American Journal of5 lining in commenting on this Statement, joliuws ihe importance of teach ing the wonderful procession of processes foyj which the Father of the Universe fronted this plnr.et ; ami that even taking a more grovelling view of the case, it is plainly to our advan tage in this world, and particularly -in this section of it not morally nor men tally alone, but perui'ha.rUyUi iiare some knowledge of Geoiogy and its compan ion Mineralogy : the nsoro the better. Tiis country contains more mineral wealth thjrn uny other on the globe. To teach wl'Te to find it and how to regonize it en found, should begone of ihe aims of ail our schools. Many a princely lor- tu&e has wipped through the fingeis of OUT citizens for lack of such knowledge. "IIask Jluj.-The Clackamas Base Ball Orb are doing r-rac very fine scoring of late. They meet frequently, at the call of the Seen tary. for field exercise. On the evening of the K.th under ihe leadership Cap is. Shepp.ud.and Randall sjx innings .Were played, eaeh nine m ikJrsg 18 runs. On the following evening, with Oapt. Johnson and Capt. Bridges, seven innings were playeipwhh a tie of 40 runs. Noonday evening last, at a meeting in this city at the M. E. Church, an .tJjtviation as above named was organized J-fi the following officers : J. On - Saturday last-we" spent three hours among the business men of Portland. We regretted that we could not stay longer think . we might have learned something by so doing -at all events, as expected, we ascertained that the times are not so very dull, after w hat has been said and done. While atCorbkt & MacleayY that lirm sold ono bill of goods to the amount of $3,000, for the upper country. They have an immense stock on hand, suitable to the wants of the trade in their line. Mr. Jacob Mayer, late of the retail trade, has opened a fine assortment of general merchandise, which he has brought direct Irom Eastern mar kets, and offers at wholesale. Such an enterprise as his cannot fail to prove re munerative, and undoubtedly it will be appreciated by the retailers. We found the large store of E. J. Xorthrup &, Co., tilled. Irom the celler up just as is used, to be in the good old days of yore only more so. In fact we failed to discover any points to base calculations upon for. a crash, unless it be that the small middle dealers who concentraied" in Portland have mostly vamosed. That and nothing more ; but those have undoubtedly tound better quarters, and we shall believe they still live, wherever they are. Toon ' Economy." Saturday's Orego nlan dubbs the ' flat'' and " unprofitable' craft at Milwaukie. doing a transporting business for the Road Conrpany, Economy! Yes ; and poor economy at that. If the metropolitan directors of the Portland McAdamized Koad Co., will listen to the words of a ruralist we will venture to tell them that the concern they have instituted there is well adapted to driving travel in other directions. On returning from Port land last baturday in a carriage we were thirty-five minutes at the ferry. No blame for this delay can be laid to John, lie acted with all possible diligence. The boat carries but two teams. On las Tuesday seven wagons, in one squad, passed our otlice door for Portland. Now suppose the drivers all wished to get to Portland that night. They reach the Milwaukie ferry tosethcr. At the rate time was con sumed in crossing one bugcy those seven teams would be tico hours and ten minutes passing over the river at that point. The steam ferry boat would put them all over in 1; minutes, and the only extra cost to be taken into account would be the wood. It requires no more help to run the JVl icaukie than it doe3 to pull the cheap and nasty craft that is now in use. Government Wagons. We were pleased to see Messrs. Wallace & Miller, wagon makers on Front street, Portland, busy at work on Government, contracts. Thev are getting up 40 heavy wagons, calcu .ted for 0.000 or 8,000 lbs. each, six spring ambulances, and six heavy carts, a hey employ at the present time some 18 or 20 men. len of the wagons were delivered before called for by th contract, and ten others are now ready. They are made of work. V okth a Pkize. Mr. J. 11. Schram. sad dle and Harness maker of this city, has lately completed ten pairs "of reins from one hide, the longest of whieh measured ticeivefeet a-nd six inches, the last cut being eight leet m length. Such a hide is rarely, if ever s-en. The leather is-line, no cuts or bad places appearing in the lines as made, 'i h- hide was dressed at the Mil waukie tannery, but we are unable to say where, or by whom. the ox or cow was killed. Waste of Guain. V'e wish for the credit of our people, that persons who sack grain for market in Oregon vrould do a better job. It is absolutely a shame to see the useless waste of so much choice wheat, oats, and other grains, fur want of proper care, as may be daily witnessed at the docks in this city, while the sacks are in transitu. New Bni.mMJs. Active preparations are miking for m my fine largo buildings to be erected in Portland this season. The foundations for several of them have been already started, while the material is on toe ground for others. Mayor Iloimes lead off and about ready street. has a neat two story brick to be enclosed, on Alder Accident.- -On Monday evening last Mr. Abel Mattoon of Ws city, met vith a seri ous accident, having had both bones of the left arm broken by the fall of a tree. We are pleased to learn from Dr. Barclay, however, who attended the patient, that be is doing well. The base ball club will regret to fose the services of Mr. Mattoon for the lime being, as he is among the best of ilieir players. Con. " Why is Oregon City like a mod ern lady of fashion ?" asked our friend Isaac a few evenings since, of the Pope and several others, who were viewing the new walk and street above ihe Barlow House. "Give it up." was the usual ac clamation. 'Then I will tell you,'' said Isaac. u It is because she sports a huge waterfall." Umpire. At the regular meeting of Clackamas B. B. Club, May 21st, 18U7, A. J. Apperson was elected Umpire for the season. The Club meet for field exercise every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, at 4 o'clock, r. m. A general invitation is extended to all to participate. When Teams Quit. The Denver Xeics says teams quit crossing the Missouri river on the ice. between Omaha and Council Bluffs, on the first of April. They gener ally quit passing between Portland and Oregon City after a rain storm. New Discovery. Mr. Harry Nevison, of White Bluffs, informed us a few days since that quartz of exceeding richness has been discovered interior from that poiotj uiu. it xpeeioi are uoi- yet prep.tuvea. 10 make the exact locality public. Li'mreu for Lafayette. The Canemah Lumbering Company are now busily en gaged ia tilling as -order for luaiber for Lafayette. Yamhill .county. We under stand the material is to be used in the hew Lafayette School House. Exhibition-. The exhibition advertised to take place in this city on two evenings of next week, is recommended highly by many who have witnessed it in Portland. The programme shows that it is both in tellectual and amusing. A New Coat. Everybody who is able to wear good clo's seems so proud of them, that Doc. Apperson has decided upon giving the Imperial Mills a new coat. ScrcrnB. Mr.; Thomas Waterbury, an old resident and citizen of Clackamas county, committed suicide one day lagt week south of this place. Religious. Rev. P. S. Knight of Salem, w ill discourse in this city to-morrow, we presume at the Congregational Church. . Oregon Flock. If any further evidence is wanted of the superiority of our flour in the great markets, see the following para graph from a letter to a P.rm in Portland. ' The Imperial flour is making progress in the estimation of consumers as well as in trade generally. On tbe"l5ih, il'-- telegraphed to a Louse of high standing in Philadelphia that he had shipped 1.000 bbls Imperial Mills extra flour, on board the clipper ship Seminole, which he would place to their credit. He received an ans ver yesterday that they would take the said 1,000 bbls at the fig ures mentioned. You will se by thTs transaction what the advantage is to have a good reputation established" for a brand here. Befor all the fiour had left the mill in Oregon City, it iras 6ooA-Z us purchased in Philadelphia. The Oregonian, in this connection, adds that a gentleman, long resident in Portland and lately in San Francisco, while there, had a conversation with the head miller of the Golden Gate Mills, in which the latter admitted the su periority of several of the Oregon brands, and that to bring California brands up to them it icill be necessary to mLs Oregon wheal ieliJi California arain. This is an honest confession from a California miller of a fact of which we may well be proud, and which California papers persistently and carefully labor to conceal. The fact is Oregon is just now getting pretty well ahead of the hounds, and we must be par doned if we toot our horn unpleasantly loud in our big sister's ear. TiiK Roads. Since the date of our last issue we have passed over the. roads be tween this city and Portland twice, but we have not time to mention the memoranda we made. ' by the way," in detail' this week. It would not flatter the citizens of Portland, nor this county (owning the Ca son bridge) . very much, for us to do so. We presume the condition of the roads is well known to all but now that the pub lic are interested ia the bridge, and would undoubtedly like to see it patronized, a few matters ought to be suggested with re spect to its care. " By St. l'An."-" The work" of erect ing an extensive oil mill at this city the ensuing season " goes bravely on." The machinery is now on the way out from Atlantic ports, and is expected soon to ar rive. Negotiations have been pending be tween Mr. Cartwright. of the Salem com pany, and the company at this city, and a consolidation of interests will perhaps be effected next week. Mr. Cartwright is ex pected to arrive here on Wednesday next for the purpose of arranging for a site for the works. I. O. O. F. The Grand "Lodge of Odd Fellows for the State of Oregon, adjourned to meet at Oregon City in May, 1868. The following officers of the Grand Lodge were elected to serve the insuing year : J. T. Bloomfield. M. W. Grand Master ; Silas J. Day, R. W. P. Grand Master ; John M. Bacon. 11. W. Grand Warden ; Chester N. Terry. R. W. Grand Secretary ; L II. Moores, R. W. Grand Treasurer. Repre sentatives to the Grand Lodge : Cris. Tay lor and S. Ellsworth. Knapp, Burrell. & Co. In another col uran will be found the advertisement of the above firm. It is important to farmers that they should have the most improed kind of machinery, and it is their intsrest to examine tne merits of ail new inv en tions that promise to give them greater re turns. These gentlemen are largely en gaged in the importation of the best kinds of machinery for agricultural purposes and as they devote their sole attention to their business they are enabled to sell all kinds ot machinery as cheap if not cheap er than any other establishment on the Pacific, coast. All orders will be prompt ly attended to. Sei.f.ct School. We are pleased to state that Misses Josie DeVore and Flora Olney have opened a select school at the Baptist. Church in this city. Both ladies are competent teachers. Miss DeVore is a graduate of the Portland Academy and Female Seminary, tvnd comes highly re commended by rrol. Gatch. We are indebted to Messrs. Kelly & Pillsbiiry for sundry bot tles of soda and ginger-pops, fresh from their fountains. These gentleman will shortly open a tasty sa!oon, one door south of the Post-office, with billiard table, etc., which is to be conducted on the principles of temperance, and be known as the Good Templar's Resort. Shut Down. A portion of the machinery of the Oregon City Woolen Factory has been stopped, in consequence of the dearth in trade. The Company have a large stock of cloths, etc.. on hand, however, which will be sold at market rates but, in reality, are 30 per cent, better goods than auy brought from abroad. Trok Grob. Prof. Grob, who has gain ed quite a distinctive reputation in Port land for his proficiency in the music line, will give a grand vocal and instrumental concert at Oro Fino Hall, assisted by his pupils, on Thursday evening June 6th. Prof . G. deserves a crowded house. A Goon Hotel. SoEte of our citizens, returning from Pojtland, speak in the highest praise of the American Exchange. They say there is no better hotel in the country, and we believe them. Mr. Quitn by deserves success. He has made very great improvements over the mutations of that house since it was known as the Pioneer. Furnitfre House. We took a look thronGrh the extensive furniture rooms of those enterprising and liberal dealers. Messrs. Hurgren & Shindler, on a late visit to Portland. We found everything about the premises neat and tasty. The st o civ is kept full by repeated arrivals, and every article lor the household, from a marble-top to a plain deal set. may be seen there. See advertisement. Pianos Their Care, By special re quest we re-publish, the article on the fourth page to-day, giving directions with regard to the care of pianos. W. T. Shan ahan, whose elegant gallery and music store is on the corner of First and Morrison street, 'Portland, is recommended as one of the ablest tuners in the State. We be lieve him to be such. Poix Tax. IVU tax is now due. The City, Council have authorised the Collec tion of an amount similar to that paid the county for every individual between the ages of 20 and aO. and one additional day for every thousand dollars, worth of prop erty. IxpisFENsiDLEs. A good blotting pad, smooth paper, clear pen. and pure ink, are inutspensioie arueies to a ousiness man. Mr; John Fleming, of the Main Street Book Store has them for sale, GJ ? e him a call. - Ths Bilk -We believe we lead off in the matter of exposing the rascally practices of "J. J. Knowltou & Co.." of rian Fran cisco. Since we published our notice of the scamp, the Albany Democrat. Amador Di-i- vaU-Ji, Democratic Standard, and other pape-s ated the scoundrelism of the rogue. Kuowl ton. Pass liini along, brethren f the press. We clip the above from the Lafayette Courier. After so much being said, to show that the firm alluded to were gross swindlers, the publisher who is beat by them should, not expect much sympathy. Knowlton & Co. have received cash, from all advertisers whose business they had in hand, but f'aat does not help the case of the publisher. Our advice to publishers is this : accept of no ads. from San Fran cisco except they come through the hands of L. 1'. Fisher. 620 Washington street ; then all applications for lease of your col umns in that quarter will be paid promptly. This is our experience, and we think every publisher who has had business with Fisher will be ready to testify to the same. Vegetable Poem. At a tableau exhi bition in Auburn, New York, the following vegetable poem was produced : Onion garden bed reclin ng Beets a youth his aching head ; Cauliflowers? Lo, weeds confront me! Lettuce hence, he sadly said. Carrots out the ctontest manhood, Peas my weary soul doth need. Bean. O ! strife for me hereafter, Else my heart will go to seed. Alley Improvement.
