HOW TirAKE CAKE OK A PlAXO. We COpj 4 the' following plain and simple directions for the proper care of pianos from a cotem porary : It should be rememberd thatr the pianoforte, is susceptible to the change of temperature; and -when tuned ' in one tem penmire. will be out of time in another. Good' andt well .made, piano fortes will f stand: m tune; id they are tuned at proper periods". jMany people, as , they wihh to avoid expense, will let their instruments rem.iiii long out of tune, which is a great detriment to them, as they are less likely to siand well after having been so left. We will oiler a lew hints in reference to the nutter. A piano-forte ought justly to be tuned twice a year, at least. First, .when you commence with a fire in the room ; second when a fire is discontinued. Iiyfbllowing this course you have the best guarantee that the instrument will rem tin in tune for the longest period of time. Again, the instrument should not be suffered to remain below concert pitch ; if it is for years tuned below, it will never aftei,Gstand up to the pilch without a great deal of labor, if. indeed, it ever stand at all. Many otherwise beautiful instruments are neat ly i or quite t ruined for w ant ' of ? roper attention p to I these simple facts, "et it wiil never answer for a professional tuner to recommend these things ; if he does, the people will suspect lam imme diately ol sellish motives, and say that he is planning lor his own advantage. Own ers of piano fortes who are not acquainted with the nature of the instrument ought to bear these facts in mind, when, by a yearly outlay of a trilling sum they might save themselves infinitely more than they really expend, by the preservation of their instrument, in which they have invested 60 much. ' ' ; - . . ;- Extracting Perfume. The bisulphide -of carbon, a very volatile, colorless li quid, of a foetid smell, readily uissolr s J he essential oils of flowers to which they ,owe their agreeable odor. M. Sebnaiter'e process for obtaining perfumes is to fill a large phial with the petals, just gather ed, of the flower" he wants to operate upon, and having poured upon them a sufficient quantity, of bisulphide of carbon (sul phnret - of carbon) to cork the plihil. shake it. and let it stand. The bisulphide penetrates into the substance of the petals and expels the water they contain which goes to the bottom. After six days' m asceration the bisulphide of carbon charg ed with the essential oil of the flowers is decanted into another phial containing fresh flowers, and this operation is repeat ed four times; after which, if the quantity of flowers is t considerable the bisulphide will be tiiflily colored. It is now necessary .ti separate the bisulphide from the per fume. If the quantity be small it may be left in the open air. by which the olatile bisulphide will soon be evapo rated, and the residue is then to be treat ed with alcohol having the strength of about eighty-three per cent. This pro cess can be performed' by any farmer's daughter, but when the amount to be made is very large - the oil of almonds -should be .added to the saturated bi--JBuiphide and the whole distilled at a very w temperature, so as to save the bi sulphide, and the residue is treated With alcohol as before described. " G "Preservation of Flowers. At several fairs of the American Institute dried flow ers in their natural 'colors and shape have been exhibited. Flowers thus perfectly preserved are now for sale in London Jops. The process of preservation is this: A metallic vessel is provided with a movable top and bottom. The top cover q is removed, and a wire gauze of moderate fineness is fitted into the top of the vessel, when the cover is replaced. Sufficient sand to fill the vessel is first sifted and tlwm placed in an iron pot with a small quantity of stearin about half a pound to 1 JO pounds, of sand. The .-mixture is heated, and carefully stirred, so as to equally diffuse the stearin. The first ves sel is then turned upside down, the bottom cover xetaoved. and the flowers to be op erated on are placed m tue wire gauze, after which, the. prepared sand is gently poured in so as to cover the -powers en tirely, the leaves being thus prevented from touching each other. This vessel is th.ee put in a hot place such, for instance, as the top of a baker's oven and left for 48 hours. The vessel is then taken out. and, while still bottom upward, the lower cover is removed and the sand runs out through the gauge, leaving the flowers vic inj tired and dry, yet still retaining their natural colors. A GoonIxyEN"no.v. A valuable fire es cape has been introduced in England in a form convenient for travelers; and as safe G .and t asy to use as a flight of stairs. Within a thin metallic case only 7 inches in diameter, are coiled on a pulley thirty feet of light, strong and flexible steel-wire rope or tape, passing out between rollers adjusted by a huh. 1 screw to any desired pressure, and terminating in n" hook for. -fastening to a Window seat. A chair for the body, formed of leather straps, is at tached to the case, and the hook being se .Cttved to the window seat, the person seat ed in the chair ni.iy regulate or arrest at pleasure his own descent, by means of the screw. By using fincU-d -.wire, woven into a tape, sixty feet might be coiled in ? smaller case than that Above descr.bed. making a perfect fire escape portable in every one's carpet bag. Save Yock 0.. Put the wick into .the lamp and 11 the latter about half . full of coarse salt, and then put in one inch of oil, and it will be found that a 'great saving will be the result. . The salt w astes gradually away during the burning, and must, therefore, be renewed from time, to time. The light is purer and more .brilliant than without the salt, and the - MM j, - - ' t 1 ' 1 . BwMHk- Classification- of Meteorites. Prof. C. W. Shepard, of Amherst College, has newly arranged meteorites in three class es, viz: I Litholites. or stony, the word being derived from the Greek word Lithos. a stone. II. Lithosideriles. or mixed stone and iron; from "the Greek LUkos and Sideros, iron. III. Sidtrites, consisting chiefly of iron. The first class Litholites embraces three sub -classes. 1. Eutrictic, or distinct earthy individuals; Crystalline. , ...... 2. Dyscritic, or indistinct earthy individ uals. 3d Anthracite or black. The second class Lithosideriles embraces two sub-classes. ; 1. Pleiotholithie or more than half stony. 2 Meitholithic, or less than half stony. The third class Sideriles. includes two sub-classes. 1. Psatharic, or brittle. 2. Apsatharic, or tough. Each of these sub classes is subdivded into several orders, which cannot be here i r .-i tt i i v enuineraieu. u uuer leese oruers ne uas arranged two hundred and eleven varie ties, stating when and where each was found. Under the bead of Meteoric Minerals he enumerates. eighteen species which are supposed to have existed in meteorites anterior to their arrival within our at mosphere. e i A New Word Photogram."' A cor respondent proposes to rectify a manifest error introduced of late years into our language, in the progress of invention. ' Photograph"' has a termination devoted to the verb active, or otherwise to the name of the agent; photograni"1 is the proper torm tor tue name ot tne euect or product. The suggestion is unimpeacha ble. The same argument by which the introduction of the word telegram'', was successfully enforced requires us to accept phonogram. Yve might as properly speak of sending a telegraph as ot buyinj a photograph. Doth are abhorrent to classical order. The reason is, that graph is the root ot the present active to write. or, using the participle substantively anything writing ; while gram is the root of the perfect participle passive written. or, substantively, anything written. Wn.n Rick. At least 00.000 bushels of wild rice yearly are gathered by the Indi ans in the .Northwest. In tne rail it is worth SI. and in the Snrino-from S4 to a bushel. It is dark-colored when cooked and similar to the common article. It grows only under water on a muck bot tom, when; there is a uniform depth, and yields from 20 to '63 bushels per acre. If the Agricultural Pureau would send to Minnesota for a good supply of this wild rice, possibly the country would be served as well as by the importation of squash seed from Europe. The question of whether it will grow anywhere, by proper treatment, is one or tne important tnimrs people would liki '-rto-.v Potato Pocia.c. iva.. iu.e is the necessity to use a poultice, no person who has once experienced the comfort of a potato poultice, will again use bread. Pare and boil the potatoes, strain and then mash them with a fork over the lire. Put them in a bag. and apply the poultice as hot as the patient can bear it. Putting Out a Fike. During the pro cess of extinguishing the fire in the colliery of Clackmannan, near Stirling, England in 1851. about 8.000.000 cubic feet of car bonic acid eras were required to fill the mine, and a continuous stream of impure carbonic acid woskept up night and day for about three weeks, lhe .mine ex tended over a surface of twenty-six acres, and had been thirty years on fire. The Magic Cocker Settler. A new kitchen utensil called the Magic Coffee Settler has recently attracted attention. It costs only fifty cents, and is said to do its work well. It is a perforated cup of tin, surmounted by a cone, and literally traps all the coffee grounds and strains the liquid clear of all sediment. The Settler may and purchased of D. II. From Herkimer Co., alone, IS. 172,911" lbs. of cheese were ship ped last year. Want of Enterprise. Spain and Brazil have abundance of coal, but import the article at heavy cost from England, for want of enterprise to work their own mines. It is believed that a coal field fringes the coast ot Brazil from the river Platte to Cape St. Roque. How to Kill Brakes. Mow them early and continue to do so two or three times in the season for two years, and if you do not have grass in their place the ground is too poor to grow it. Jf ladies appreciated the beauty of their feet as they do that of their. necks, shoul ders, &c., they would probably go to balls barefoot.
