Enterprise lost overboard her smoke stack
on her last trip, at llarrisburg, it having
caught on a ferry wire at that place.

tain and crew might probably have been
squatted, in which case we Viionld have
beer, called upon to publish an obituary
notice.
The Skinu Seeding. The farmers of
the Willamette valley have been actively
engaged during the last three weeks at
planting and seeding, and from the best
information we can get, haye p.ut n more
acres in whe;ft this year than at any pre
vious season.
Fike in 1'owei.is Valley. On Tues
day last, we learn, the fire hi the woods
east and north of this city extended to
1'owell's valley, and destroyed consider
able property r Mr. Roberts appears to
have lost the greatest amount as his build
ings were burned.
T oou Our city purchasers are taking
in considerable wool. The average prices
are from 19 cents to 20 cents per lb. We
should think, as an inducement for good
"wool, properly baled, that the price ought
to be u little better for such qualities.

heard of the honest Magistrate described 5
by Washington Irving, who. in his anxiety
to administer exact justice, ?o far forgot
the law as to settle the case by requiring
the Constable to pay the costs, but Marion
couutv has recently lurmsLcd a Magistrate
who. though too smart to commit the same
blunder, was caught in a worse trap. . Two
of his neighbors wnt to law, but the
Squire, in the goodness of his heart, per
suaded them to settle the matter before it
came to trial, but as there was a touch of
nature about him he did not forget his
own lees, and accordingly be proceeded
to assess the costs, but enlircij forgot the
Constable's fees, which amounted to more
than his own. What was his surprise and
mortification therefore, when the Consta-

called upon him for his fees. Ia vain the
(pure remonstrated, the Constable told
him the roads were too bad to ride for
nothing, and as he had property in bis
lauds, he would certainly sell it. unless
the fees were paid and the squire was

If. instead of sunning ourselves in specu
lations with reference to dull times, a few
picks and shovels were put to use, we
would see a decided change in affairs be
fore many winters? . This matter of roads
is one upon which the most over nice in
dividual might well lend a hand, to help
along.

se for excursion!::;. Turn which way
he will the pleasure seeker is sure to find
what he hunts. Does he rea l Bryant, or
Goldsmith, or Irving, he jumps upon the
Columbia River boats, that are so luxuri
ous in every respect.- and sails up as
far as the Dalles or Celilo and enjoys one
of the most beautiful panoramas in the
world. Is he a reader of Downing, and
fancies rural scenery, lie goes up the Wil
lamette, turns into the Yamhill, or finds
his way to the beautiful places on laud.
If he reads Byron and feels the "rapture
by the lonely shore," he seek- some one
of the ocean resorts either Clatsop, Baker's
Bay. Tillamook, or Yamuna, or if he
chooses to be rocked in the cradle of the j
deep." he purchases a ticket on some
steamboat that is advertised for the north
or the south, and if he becomes tired of
life on the ocean
to his home by
wave he may return
coach and four, from
Olympia. or Lincoln. Either way the
panorama is one of nature's best.
Sunday School Excuii.;:ox. On last
Thursday week, through the favor of the
President of the P. T. Company, the Sun
day School children of this city were given
a free steamboat excursion to Rock Island,
where they enjoyed a pic nic. A few days
after that the smvi favor was extended to
all the Sabbath School children - of Port
land and now we observe that a steamer
has been placed at tin; disposal of the
Sunday Schools ot Salem, and an excur
sion has been decided upon for Albany, on
June 51b where the Albany and Corvaiiis
schools will join, in a grand festival.
Committed to Jail. On Tuesday last
G. W. Dodson was arrested by Officer
Vandervort and upon heating before Jus- j
tice Moore was committed to jail i:i de- j
fault of payment of penalty for larceny of !
funds belonging to J. D. Manning. On !
