On Thursday last th; youngsters and voting misses? of this city enjoyed a pic nk- aod steamer excur sion to Rock Island, having, as we Under stand, a good time generally. We love to see everybody enjoy themselves. H we are too much occupied wish business to go frequently or occasionally ourseif. We cannot take the one-shied view of such oc currences that some crusty old bachelor of Sacramento does. Hear him ; be says : Why people go to picnics is a mystery more inexplicable than Heller's ".Second Sigh- ;"' because I know a dozer, men here vao positively know twelve dLTe .vat wavs of explaining the latter, and I have nev er seen one who could give a good reason for the former. The discomforts attending the trips, even more than a similarity in name, have often suggested to me "that there is but a trifling difference between going to a picnic and going to the oid nick. With me - all things always are the same"' on these excursions. I invariably have a headache. JJetwixt dust and per spiration 1 invariably have a soiled sensa tion. I invariably have a straw hat blown away, and although I sincerely admire the economy of nature, which provides that straws shall show which way the wind blows, still, when a whole hat insists upon imparling the useful information and never returning to fulfill any of the sec ondary duties of straw, it is'disasreeab'e. Picnics are this year peculiarly prevalent. There were last week two excursions to Cisco, a picnic up the Valley Railroad for tin; High School scholars asa final climac tic tort lire after the recent examinations, and a picnic over to Yolo for those of the Grammar School. For this week's penance the Progressive Lyceum will proceed to Rosevilleon Tuesday : the Good Templars will go there the next day. r.nd on the fol lowing, the Emmet Guards and friends vill set sail for a grove near Freeport. No class of citizens are exempt. It will break out presently among the Sunday School scholars and rage unabated until all the vicious insects and terrible bugs and frightful spiders are dead, and the thermometer decreases to 100 degrees and the dust is laid, when it will cease its rav ages until another summer." Okkcox Citv Fi.ont. We clip the fol lowing flattering notice of Oregon Flour and Wheat from the New York Ship ping and Commercial List : The arrivals of Flour and Wheat from our Pacific States during the last few months have been timely, since the supplies of sound qualities- m the great producing States this side of the Rocky .Mountains h.ive fallen short to some extent. At first, our bakers and others had an aversion to Oregon Flour, on account of its lack of gluten and its being mostly in sacks, but this has been measurably overcome, and it is now sought after." and used freely for pastry and for mixing with inferior AVestern Flour to bring up the color of the latter. .Millers have also gained in knowledge as to the proper treatment of California Wheat, and they are new buying quite as freely of this as of any oilier kinds. A considerable portion of the late receipts of Flour i-ia the Isrhmus. has consisted of Oregon, and the best kind ret c-ived. Oregon City Milis." compares favorably with (Mir best Atlantic States samples 0!iChange. The last steamer brought .0;)() barrels to Charles Dimon. in ;0 days from Portland Oregon. Our attention has been called to th..' fact that the statutes of Oregon. a at present existing, do not de fine any stand ird for the government of farmers in ihe buiid'ng of their fences. An evil disposed neighbor ma7 take un due advantages of another in such case, by bringing suit for damig 's done to his fields when in fact he had not even an ap'd.ogy for a fence to restrain the herds i-f the adjoining ciiizen. llesides this, poor fences are greater inducements to breachy cattle than green grass at any time mat er should receive some tension by our legislators at its earliest session.
