Oukgox Citt V"oolkn Goods. Last
week we mentioned a fact that woolen
goods manufactured at the rnijl of the Or
egon City Manufacturing Company had
not stood very well in the market, at a
certain period lately. In justice to Mr. J.
1. Wortiey, superintendent, and the Man- f
ufacturing Company, we are permitted to j
state that the Board of Directors feel that I
they know the real cause of this ; that the j
goods which have damaged the reputation j
of the mill were not made by Mr. Wortiey, 1
but were produced by Mr. 11. II. Duncan! j
previous to his resignation as Superintend- !
ent. and alter he had contracted to go to i
Brownsville, without the knowledge' of the !
Company here. We last week slated what
we be ieved to be the facts with regard to
the productions of .Mr. Wortiey. The Ore
fjoiofui of Sunday last has the following :
The company has recently added largely
to the machinery of the mills from the
most celebrated loom works of the East,
and is now manufacturing more goods
and a greater variety, than ever before.
While at Oregon City on Saturday we
were shown the slock of goods on hand,
and we were satisfied that no better or
handsomer goods are manufactured in this
Slate or in the United States. Several
sorts of cassimeres shown us, are entirely
new to this coast, and are the result of in
genious and pains-takina: e-ne'-iment bv
Mr. Wortiey. the Superintendent, and hfs 1
principal operatives. A dark steel-mixed'
cassimere. which so closely imitates double
twist that only those of experience would
be able, to detect the difference, is the re
sult, ot one of these experiments. It is
made by running through the carders, the
different colored wools at the same time,
an operation which only the most skillful
workmen can perforin successfully. In
this case the evidence of skill is incontest
able. The new machinery, of. all the latest
improved patterns, enables the company
to turn out now, fabrics of a quality very
superior to anything heretofore manufac
tured on this coast, and which would not
suiter by comparison with the same style
of goods manufactured anywhere, either as
to texture, strength or beauty. The com
pany makes use of only the best grades of
wool, and every bolt turned out may be
relied on, therefore, as being truly all that
it appears to be. Xo shoddy material
goes into the mill and no shoddy goods
come out of it."'
New Books. ?dr. F. Roman of Portland,
has sent us from his Book establishment a
copy of the amendments to the Internal
Revenue Law. approved March 4th, ist;7.
This pamphlet- will be found wry useful.
It is indexed, and is from the official copy.
Everybody should have one. AVe also
find upon our table from Mr. Roman, a
copy of a work entitled " The Financial
Economy of (he United States Illustrated"
being a work of over :i00 pages, wliich
shows some of the causes which re lard the
progress of the Pacific States, wriiten by
John Alexander Ferris. A. M. Judging
from the casual attention we have given
it. the book has more than ordinary merit.
The author takes the ground that as gold
is the staple of this coast no currency
should be tolerated which cheapens gold,
or lessens the demand for it as money.
Shows the powers of Congress to authorize
the coinage of money, and regulate the
value of the same, and assumes that the
specie basis, dollar for dollar, is the only
proper regulation of currency.
Notes i kom the Lodoe Room. Our as
sociates in the order of Good Templars are
perhaps well aware of the fact that they
violate their oath if thev at anv lime dis- '
close matters in public which transpire in
the Lodge. The following is artie'e IX, of
the by-laws : "Any member who shall di
vulge the name of any member who shall
have voted or spoken against any person
proposed to become a member of this
Lodge, or shall misrepresent the discus
sions of the members, so as to cause dis
turbance or angry feelings among the
members, or be.-; ween the members and
others, or shall reveal the private affairs of
the Lodge to any person no1; a member,
shall be reprimanded, suspended, or ex
pelled, as the Lodge may decide." We do
not propose to divulge the private affairs
of the order, but wo are permitted to state
j that candidates for initiation at every meet
1 ing lately number largely. We presume
not less than thirty persons took this step.
in Oregon City, during the month of April.

vated on tiie interior. The papering was
neatly done by Mr. R. Cautield. A fine
baptismal fount has lately been added to
the chapel. It. was made in this city by
Mr. A. P. DeLin. and is as fine a piece of
work as the best San Francisco mechanic
could produce. It was purchase? by the
Sabbath school children's contributions.

Tiik Vallky Raii.uoap. Governor

He informed us when here that the article
we quote elsewhere upon the valley rail

GoooTkmti.ars Pjc-Nic The excursion
of our Good Templars to Rock Island on
May-day passed off very pleasantly. The
day was one of May's fairest, and tin?
Templars, after an informal meeting at the
Lodge, and the election of Miss Ardula
Randall as Queen of May. marched tu the
accompaniment of inspiring music bv the
Oregon City Brass Band, to the steamer
Active, lying at the Company's works.
All hands and the baskets being on board,
('apt. Pease sounded the good-b e whistle
and the gallant boat sped away, with as
cheery, happy-looking a crowd as was
ever gathered, even on May-da v. Llvelv
music woke the echoes, and maybe startled
the ghosts of departed red men yet hover
ing amid live winl romantic defiles which
enclose the Willamette at Rock Island,
threatening the hardy mariner, who
comes with rushing prow and screaming
vhistle, to score the tally of Anglo-American
progress across the continent full
wide, and to set at defiance Bryant's beau
tiful lines of silence deep profound
'Where sweeps the mighty Oregon, and
heirs no sound save his own dashings.''
Handkerchiefs waved bright eyes flashed
and -all went merry as a marriage bell."
though Bro. Locey assures us that the Ore
'joidau's item wherein he was made 10
figure in a yet more interesting ceremony
than crowning the Queen, was a flight of
imagination on the part ofme unknown
friend. Midway on Rock Island the parly
disembaiked, and after the Queen hall
been enthroned by the Marshal. Col. W.
L. White, arid Assistant Marshal Mrs. Bray,
with attending Maids of Honor, the cere
mony of crowning' was performed by
Judge J. D. Locey, who had been selected
by the ladies for that purpose. Afterward
came music, and then one of the joliiest
dinners on record. Swings were put up
on the highest scale, and so the time passed
till half past two. when all hands gathered
on board, and the prow stiil turned up
ward, a landing was made on the oid Bar
low place, once the residence of Dr. A. R.
T. Locey, afterward of W. C. Dement, both
old pioneers, who made a roof tree there
in rne almost tahied V.i days. Here m a
beautiful meadow, the boys of the Base
Ball Club had a lively game, while the
girls van some merry races on the green
sward. Toward evening all hands met on
the boat once more, and speeding toward
home, with skillful pilotage threading the
mazes of the channel of Rock Island,
passed the dinner ground, and about ." r.
