"Wool Vv'e are informed that the state
ment that the Brownsville mills were pay
ing 23 cents "t lb. for wool does not apply
to the approaching clip, but was for extra
of the last year's clip. It is considered
donbtful where buyers can ofier above the
average of twenty cents p ib. Appropos
to this question, we have a few suggestions
to olfer tor the benefit of the wool grower:
Very much Oregon wool is scarcely merch
antable on account of the condition it is
in when put upon the market, that other
wise would command round figures. The
season is now close upon us, and we trust
a few hints may not be amiss. Many farm
ers, in shearing, break the fleece more than
they should, which reduces the value of
the wool broken wool of the same quali
ty and condition always being of less value
than fleece. Another error, too common,
is in ' doing up" fleeces icrong side out.
After the fleece is sheared it should be
spread upon a board, or, it clean, the
ground, the side cut with the shears down
wards ; then double the sides in and roll
from each end to the center, and tie with
two or three good strings thus you get
the best part of the fleece outside and the
quality of the wool is not only more read
ily ascertained, b:it it is a great saving to
the producer, and the manufacturer. An
other bad practice is in the handling of
wool, in dirty places. It should be kept
as free as possible from hay, straw, chips,
shavings, feathers, etc., etc. Thousands of
dollars are uselessly wasted, from inatten
tion to this particular. It can be easily
avoided by very little care.

commend to the perusal of thoughtful
readcrs.a communication headed as above,
which will appear next week. Lahrador
is a mail of experience, and knows whereof
he speaks. We invite correspondence on
this side of this important question but
do not wish to hear from uni; who favor
the system of Chinese ?.'bor. Their cause
is not worth hearing and for one, this
paper will not listen to them nor advance
their damnable schemes by even admit
ting rebutting evidence. Our advice to
laboring white men throughout Oregon is
to organize, prepare for the tight which is
inevitable. lie patient and firm. Do not
encourage trifling strikers, but prepare to
protect yourselves. Let us not wait as
they did in our sister State, until capital

Organize now, as you value your time, and
would not be lowered to the level of the
abominable trash which is being sent
hither -and thither throughout the land all
about you.
City Cleition.
Editor Enterprise :
In your issue of the 20th inst., I notice a
short article on the coming city election,
in which there is a suggestion that it might
be well to disregard politics and fill the
various offices with our best men, both
political parties concurring therein. Al
low me to say that I heartily endorse the
movement.
I am a Unnn man. and have voted the
Republican ticket ever since the organiza
tion of the party, and expect to vote it iu
all political contests that may arise, so
long as the party adheres to its true prin
ciples. ' But city officers cannot, by means
of such offices, exert a political influence
beyond that which they possess as private
individuals. No action that they may take
can or will have any influence on county,
Stale, or National politics. But the city
election is and should be more like a family
arrangement than a field for political con
test, and the officers elected should be
chosen with a view to the general good of
the entire mass of the town.
If this view of the situation is correct,
and meets with approbation of a majority
of our citizens, w hy not call a meeting
and invite all parties to participate. And
at such meeting let such parties be nomi
nated for the various offices as the public
may desire for that purpose.

Salmon-. Mr. II B. Kelley of this city
has captured, from time to time of the
present season's run. some of the finest
salmon trout we have ever seen. His new
market is in the stand lately occupied by
K. Fay no. opposite the Fost Office. These
trout undoubtedly left 44 for Eugene City
ami ,Spriug'jeld.:; when they started from
old ocean, but the insurmountable barrier
at this place, consisting of sundry gill-nets
and a precipitous cliff, prevent many of
them frotn going "on in their native ele
ment. Kelley, with that usual character
istic of his to accommodate, takes the fish
out of the water and forwards them on by
steamer. About one hundred went up in
this way on Monday last.
Editor Enterprise :
I see by the Enterprise of last Saturday
that you favor a ticket composed of men
of all parties for the approaching city
election. I will state that the Union men
of this city have heretofore made proposi
tions of that kind, and 1 would suggest
that if any such arrangement is wanted to
let it come from the Democratic camp. I
do not wish to be understood as doubting
but that you may consider the idea a good
one, yet, speaking as a man who stood by
the Union party in its darkest hours, I am
not now willing to concede that the party
is incapable of sustaining itself, and of
governing even our own quiet city on the
principles of equal and exact justice to all
men. Had.
"We think Rad. is mistaken in his idea
that the suggestion offered in these col
umns tended to any such admissions as he
has imputed. It is optional with the pub
lic of Oregon City, to do what they deem
right and proper in the premises. Iu case
a ticket such as was proposed could be
made iu harmony, we would be bound to
stand by it but if not, then fight it out on
the old line.
Falnkul Acc.dknt. We are pained to
record a sad accident which befel Air.
Arthur Warner, at his farm east of this
city on Saturday evening last. It appears
that Air. Warner, and a man in his employ,
were engaged in splitting t mber, when
Mr. W.s head was accidentally struck by
the blade of an axe in the hands of the em
ployee, badly fracturing the skull. Dr.
Barclay was summoned, and as speedily
as possible dressed the wound, but it was
understood to be a doubtful case, yet we
are pleased to state that yesterday Mr.
Warner was much easier, and seemed like
lv to recover.
City Fixanves. We have received too
late for insertion this week, the annual re
port of the Finance Committee of the City
Council. There is a surplus in the treas
ury ot $2,420.20 to the school fund. The
debt of the city at the present time is
Sl,2y.04-. The indebtedness at the com
mencement of the fiscal year was $2,761.38.
Showing a considerable reduction. The
debt would have been reduced much more,
had it not have been for extraordinary ex
penses, incurred in the collection ot city
taxes. The full report will appear next
week.

far to prove the wealth of Oregon.
