" Thompson Dray, of Cathlamet, Washing
ton Territory. Mr. D. is quite an aged
man, but is as vigorous and hearty as most
: men who haveno more than attained the

: tributes to the healthy location, in which
i lie resides, lie settled in Wahkaecum
county thirteen years since, and has never
f desired to better his situation indeed, it
would be hard(-io do so. even did he desire
3 it. The region abput Cathlamet is but
sparsely settled, and yet there is an abun
, dance of beautiful farming land in the
. a icinity. The valley in which Mr. Dray
I lives is seven miles in extent, and begins
ot a point two .miles from the town of

comers have located there. They have a

: country, and are everyway beginning -to

another valley, which Mr. D. says is better

to " feel flattered" when it was ascertained
Clackamas county flour sold at one dollar
better on a barrel than the best California
brands in New York, why may we not feel
flattered at the success of Mr. Thomas
Cross, of Salem, who has received a pro
posal from the President of the P. M. S. S.
Company, to furnish Oregon beef for all
the steamships of that line in the Pacific.
This will include the Panama line and the
Colorado, or China mail route. Captain
Eld ridge states that after thirty years ex
perience at sea, and testing many qualities
of beef, he hm never found any to equal
the article put up by Thomas Cross. Mr.
Cross recently received an account of
sales from San Francisco for a choice lot
of hams the return shows that his product
brought, in round figures, 33 cents per
lb. it will be well for farmers throughout
the State to ponder over these facts.

Maj. J. S. Rn, on the street a few days
since in company with another pioneer,
the subject turned upon the date of arri
val of the parties in Oregon. Major said
he came in 1815, that then he was consid
ered a good looking young man. "Well,
says his companion, "I think vou hold
your own pretty well.' "Yes,"" rejoined
the Major, "1 am yet tolerably good look
ing" which is a fact 'none the less impor
tant when taken in connection with an

Vacation. The City Seminary closed

ly he stood on heights back of Newport
and watched a Portland steamot pursuing
her lonely way southward. He v"is in
error. Portland owns none such. J-" he
undoubtedly belonged exclusively to Sl'R

A Few More Left. Mr. E. D. Kelly,"
across the way from this office, says he has
a few more steel engravings of Washing
ton on hand, which will be distributed to
the purchasers of goods at his store. See

week.
Oregon Trade. During the month of
January and February eight steamers ar
rived at San Francisco from Portland, car
rying an aggregate of 8,103 tons. For
the same time nine steamers cleared for
Portland, carrving 9.740 tons.
In Limiso. George Russell, who was
suspected of robbing one of the Alert's
deck hands recently, passed through this
city yesterday in chargo of Deputy Sheriff
Elake of Portland. The prisoner was ar
rested in the upper part of the valley.

The Wooly Horse. The veritable
V00ly Horse, with which Fremont found
the pith years ago, was in this city on
Tuesday. lie is now owned by a farmer
of this county, and looks about as dashing
as ever but a trifle the worse for age.
Relic-iocs.--Rev. Mr. Earle preached in
this city on Tuesday and Wednesday last,
as announced last week, since which time
services havu been held daily by Rev. P.
S. Knight.
Sold Oct. We learn, savs the Herald of
yesterday, that Weil Bros, have sold their
business to Kohn & Fishel, who will re
move to the new stand as soon as possible.

Rather Rocgii. The Corvallis Gazette
says that oa the last trip of Capt. Miller to
points up the river he refused to take on
a -band box' at that place, the Enterprise
was so heavily freighted.
Episcopal. There will be no services
at the Episcopal Church in this city, tq
morrow. On Wednesday evening however,
and on Friday next (good Friday) at 10 i
k. l. and in the evening, services will be

Axxcal Meeting. On Thursday June
20th, next, the annual meeting of the Con
gregational Association. of Oregon will be
held in this city.

Miraculous Cure. Dr. William
