I ? Tint the Citv Council appointed a
f ! committee to examine the matter of tue

upon the ground, and made examination
of the whole matter, and reported in sub

' M'hat the subject matter of the petition,

lnd tbev did not so figure with the purpose

That the valuation established by said

what the property was worth, and if erro

Washington Tkrimtorv. We were glad
t) receive a call recently from Mr.
" Thompson Dray, of Cathlamet, Washing
ton Territory. Mr. D. is quite an aged
man, but is as vigorous and hearty as most
: men who haveno more than attained the
scale (vf years for'ctive life. This he at
: tributes to the healthy location, in which
i lie resides, lie settled in Wahkaecum
county thirteen years since, and has never
f desired to better his situation indeed, it
would be hard(-io do so. even did he desire
3 it. The region abput Cathlamet is but
sparsely settled, and yet there is an abun
, dance of beautiful farming land in the
. a icinity. The valley in which Mr. Dray
I lives is seven miles in extent, and begins
ot a point two .miles from the town of
t "athlamet. The past year several new-
comers have located there. They have a
ro;nHaid out and leading to the Sound
: country, and are everyway beginning -to
1 prosper. Six miles below Cathlamet is
another valley, which Mr. D. says is better
, land, and more extensive, than the one in
- Attnch he resides) These lands can be pre
; pared for cultivation with more facility
; than lands generally throughout Ohio, the
; Sate from which Mr. Dray" hails.

to " feel flattered" when it was ascertained
Clackamas county flour sold at one dollar
better on a barrel than the best California
brands in New York, why may we not feel
flattered at the success of Mr. Thomas
Cross, of Salem, who has received a pro
posal from the President of the P. M. S. S.
Company, to furnish Oregon beef for all
the steamships of that line in the Pacific.
This will include the Panama line and the
Colorado, or China mail route. Captain
Eld ridge states that after thirty years ex
perience at sea, and testing many qualities
of beef, he hm never found any to equal
the article put up by Thomas Cross. Mr.
Cross recently received an account of
sales from San Francisco for a choice lot
of hams the return shows that his product
brought, in round figures, 33 cents per
lb. it will be well for farmers throughout
the State to ponder over these facts.
Hours His Owx. Meeting our friend
Maj. J. S. Rn, on the street a few days
since in company with another pioneer,
the subject turned upon the date of arri
val of the parties in Oregon. Major said
he came in 1815, that then he was consid
ered a good looking young man. "Well,
says his companion, "I think vou hold
your own pretty well.' "Yes,"" rejoined
the Major, "1 am yet tolerably good look
ing" which is a fact 'none the less impor
tant when taken in connection with an
other, that whenever there are any extra
doings going on in town where ladies and
gentlemen are associated, he is invs 1

a little better.

Patent Medicines. We have but
little confidence in the trumpet tongutd
statemeuts of the proprietors of advertised
medicines generally, says the Salem (Mass.)
Observer, but we are forced to concur in the
opinion, uniformly expressed by all who have
used Perry Davis' Pain Killer, that it is a
very valuable article, and one that it would
be well for every household to have at hand,
in case of bruises, scalds, burns, diarrhoea,
dysentery, cholera, fever and ague, and the
host of diseases, external and internal, which
it is adapted to cure or alleviate. No article
of medicine ever attained to sucb .unbound
ed popularity attd" expensive diffusion. It
has penetrated to every part, even the most
remote of the known world, bcar with it
its healing influences rr.ore ootent than those

Miraculous Cure. Dr. William
Heoley Dear Sir : I feel it but a duty to
inform you and the public what a miracu
lous effect vour Royal Balsam had on my
wife. She had been affected with a severe
cough for several weeks, which had assumed
a dangerous feature, for which many physi
cians have been trying without any material
benefit, and all the remedies failed to gi.'e
her any relief. Without relief was got, I
feared for the worst, in her present condi--tion.
The cough appeared to be worse at
nigLt, she could get no rest when Mr. Ran
dall, of this place, advised me to trv your
Royal Balsam; all other remedies having
failed, I concluded to try it, and I purchased
two bottles. Strange to say, by the time I
gave her three spoonsful of the Balsam she
got relief, and slept, a thing she had not done
for three nights previous. By the time she
had taken one bottle the cough wa3 checked.
Its effect was truly miraculous, as the cure
was effectual ; hence, I have no hesitation
in recommending the Royal Balsam to nil
who are afliicted and it appears astonishing
to me that medicine of such great merit, and
I might say magical effect, is not more 111
use." Mv eandid opinion is: if persons use
it once they never will be without it in the
house. u. cochuax.
