Home Mechanics A few days since our
attention has called to a couple of very
excellent freight wagons, made in this city,
which were passing by our office door, en
route for the mining regions. They were
in everyjparticular, to appearance, equal
to the best we have seen. It has always
been our pride to speak of borne mechan
ics ami knowing that those wagons must
have been made ia Oregon City we soon
found that they came from our home in
stitutions. We have twoestablishments
in this branch of industry here. One of
t'he--o we have but recently referred to,
that of Mr. John W. Lewis. The second
js not so large an establishment, but yet
the proprietors, Messrs. Smith & Mar
shall, do a large amount of work. On
Wednesday of this week we noticed a very
nice light wagon for two horses, standing
in the "shop door. eady for delivery to
the purchaser. Mr. A. J. Marshall, who
enjovs a good reputation as a mechanic,
does" the wood-work at this establishment,
and is able to toVn out one wagon per
week. The iron-work is done by Messrs.
Smith & Marshall, both practical workmen,
and thus, within themselves are engaged
iu a healthy trade. Our Portland neigh
bors will be obliged to look well to their
laurels, if thev dispose of any more stock

every article made in Oregon City is war

ly this county, but late resident of Oys
terville, W. T , vailed upon us one day this
week. He informed us that Oysferville
Mill'ered considerably from the high tides
of the p9.st winter. Several families were
I left homeless, and houseless, on account

people are jrenerallv recovering from the
lo-ses they then sustained.

ciety. At the farmers meeting, held in
this city on the afternoon of Tuesday last,
April 2, 18G7, the '-Clackamas Count-Agricultural
Society" was organized by the
election of C. Y. Beaty President, Wm.
Elliott Vice President ; D. C. Ireland Sec
retary, and J. E. Italston Treasurer. A
committe of three cousisting of the Presi
dent, Secretary, and Maj. Ilinearson. were
appointed to draft a constitution and by
laws, to govern the organization. A
committee of fifteen persons, consisting
of Messrs. Win. P. Burns, Alfred MarquanT.
Geo. Graham, Joseph Young, Harrison
Wright, Arthur Warner, E. h. Lewolling,
Jesse Moreland, J. L. Barlow, J. Barstow'.
A. 11. Shipley, Mr. McCornell, Jos. Bingo,
Almon Holcomb and J. II. Lambert, were
appointed to solicit subscriptions from the
public, to- be paid into the Treasury of the
society on or befure June 1st lSb7,"to bet
ter enable the society to hold a Fair the
ensuing fall.
A committee of five was appointed con
sisting of -Messrs., Wm. Elliott. Christian
Dierdorff, J. L. Barlow, Joseph Young and
John Kruse, to whom was designated
the purpose of securing grounds upon
which the Fair may be held, and the com
mittee were instructed to report what
grounds could be purchased, leased or
procured for.
The: President and Secretary were in
structed to correspond with parties in
Multnomah. Washington. Yamhill and
other counties, informing them of the or
ganization of this society, and asking the
co-operation of such in getting up the
First Annual Fair.
. The President, Vice President, and Sec
retary, were, appointed a committee to
procure funds due tb. c'onotv for such
purpose from the State Agricultural So-
cietv.
There was
eneral good feeling
exhibited, and the meeting adjourned to
reassemble on Wednesday, Msty 1st, 1807.
at twelve o'clock meridian, lo hear the
various reports.
It is hoped that the people generally will
attend this meeting, and take an interest
in the movement.
A Healthy Place. An old Michigan
friend called in and chatted an hour or so
with us a few days since. Becounting ex
periences of the past and present, he re
marked that the principal thing which had
kept him in Oregon in the first place, was
the health of the country. It seems like a
small item, but it is of more real import
ance to the people than the war in Candia,
the turn which politics is likely to take,
or the tariff. It has been ascertained that
the mortality of Oregon ia considerable
less than that of any" other State in the
Union. It is very low in comparison to
that of older States. This might be ex
pected, some will say, because we have not
a population which can be regarded as
symmetrical. It is true that the greatest
number of deaths occur among the very
young and the very old, but wo Wve very
near our full proportion of children, and
the aged are -'numerous. Indeed we feel
tempted to say that "vve have our full pro
portion and that the population is really
as symmetrical as u'that of Ohio for in
stance. It would be strange, if with all
our advantages of location and climate,
the conditions favorable to longevity were
not superior here to .those in any other
part of the globe. If pure sir,' rapid
streams, bracing winds, and elevated posi
tions be at nil conducive to life, we think
Oregon is the spot, above all others where
we should look tor the greatest develop
ment of health and vigor. If the millions
who are struggling and sweating along the
crowded thoroughfares of Eastern and
European Emporiums could but substitute
this for that, they might live in a highly
satisfactory manner to a green old age.
Seasonable. Spring cometlt apace. It
had a momentary interruption by dullness
and high winds, but the grass has grown
taller and greener all the tni tinder the
momentum acquired from the previous
sunshine. A select party of enterprising
prospectors rambled over the bluffs yester
day and found trees in blossom, and the
old birds going over again with their gar
rulous courtships. They returned with
bouquets of forget-me-nots, etc., which
may be found here and there in pri
vate coverts. O, Spring is'coming ! De
lightful Spring S With its balmy breath,
its verdant fields. The hopeful farmer
drives the plow, and buds expand into
feathery bloom. The joyous Ilobin screams
and wakes us up" in the morning. The
melodious voice of the cow is once more
pathetic with maternal tenderness, and as
the clouds of April Hit oer the dreamy
landscape we say :
" Come, gentle Spring ; etherial mildness
come !''
City editors like those on the Orejoruan
can't enjoy such seasonable reflections.
The extent of their observation is limited
to narrow streets pshaw : we wouldn't
live where the only indication of coining

Shirley r.s BunciiAnn. This case, taken
under advisement by Judge Shattuck at
tbe adjournment of Court, .was this week
decided iu favor of the Plaintiff. Shirjey.
It was a suit in chancery -which attracted
considerable attention during its hearing.
Shirley loaned Horsey certain money in
the year 18ti2 for which Horsey had prom
ised to execute a mortgage on his land
claim. Horsey sold to defendant Burchard
who agreed to become substituted to
Hersey and fulfil Ids contract. Burchard
afterwards refused to exc-ute the mort
gage and had the land conveyed to his
wife. The Court decided that the agree
ment was a specific lien upon the land,
and took preference of all except, purchas
ers in good faith, or parties who had ad
vanced money n tie land without knowl
edge of plaintiff's claim and had their lien
recordud.
Glad to Rktchn. It once was the cus
tom of Oregonians to speak more favorably
of California than Oregon weather, alter
a visit to" our sister State. It now the con
trary, not that the weather is any different,
but that pur second sight'Ms better.

items that the present sunny days of Ore
gon discounts San Francisco. He ex
presses himself hugely on the jveathcr, and
is particularly plensed to be as home

Correction. We may have been in er
ror, in another article, with regard to the
indications a city daily editor has of the
coming of spring. We remembered now
that one of the surest and most reliable
evidences ice had of these things, while
serving the public of Portland, was the
appearance of the latest aud finest stvles
of spring clothing, etc.. exhibited by Bar
man Brothers, Kohn- & Ftehel, and such
firms who never fall behind the times. The
appearance of friend Ackerman. of this
city with his new advertisement, which all
will read in our paper to day. tended to
stir us to a recollection of these things.
Such merchants deserve the liberal pat
ronage they enjoy.
Removed. Prof. A. J. Rutjes has remov
ed, aud in future his music room will be
at the Cliff House. Mr. R. i3 perhaps as
well skilled in the art of music as any
teacher upc"n the Pacific coast, and being
about as successful as any upon that pride
of musical instruments the piano, we are
pleased to see him permanently located
in Oregon City. It is a credit to" the place
to have one like him here, and we hope he
may be well sustained, e.s in times past.
Resigned. The friends of Rev. P. S.
Knight, Pastor of the Congregational
Church, who have for months past listened
to his discourses, will regret to be inform
ed that he closes his labors bore to-morrow.
He has accepted a call and goes to Salem.
Appeals. The case of the State vs. J.
C. Mann, tried at the late term of the Cir
cuit Court for this county, has been ap
pealed to the Supreme Court. Also the
case of 1. Weiss vs. Samuel Smith. The
latter is taken up by the plaintiff, the
former by defendant.
