diversity of opinion in reference to the
street next to Main streetunder the bluff:
-viz : Whether there is a street there or
not'; would it not be well if the city coun
cil would let the citizens know whether
they have bought iind are holding their
lots according to the Applegate map. or
the A. Lee Lewis map 1 The Applegate
map was maie. in 1843-44 ; Mr. Applate
having crossed the Plains in 1843. All
the lots in Oregon City, for several years
after Ins map was made, were sold with
most positive assurances from Dr. Mc
Laughlin that the plat of lots and streets,
: us laid down on that map, would be ad-
Hiered to by him. If there is a new map
i called the A.Lee Lewis map. and if it is
recorded as such and the citv is bound by
the record, so be it and let all hands cry

Oregon Citv, awhv will not the citv save
money bv pavingaMr. Applegate for a du
plicate map. I understand that he thought
when last in Oregon eity, that he had his
; field notes of 181:1-44 That there was a
Htreet indicated between the bluff and
Main street, is self evident to my mind, as
many lots were sold fronting toward the
. east, and no man of sense would purchase
a lot with his frontispiece boring into a
,rock except he be a miner, and 1 never
i heard those lots were purchased with this
intention and with no chance of tlet
except by the rear, and that again only by
and with the permission of his neighbors
on the front towards Main street. If there
was no Liuff street, of what use were the
alleys ami streets leading east from Main
street? I submit these suggestions for

Lyceum. The question ' Shall the U.
S. extend an immediate protectorate over
the Mexican Republic' was ably argued
before the Lyceum of this citv n Tues
day evening last. The Chairman remark
ed, at the close of the debate, in substance
that the question had been so ably con
tested that it made it difficult for him to
decide, nevertheless, he held that the af
firmative had the best of the argument, in
showing that the I nited States have a right
to extend such a protectorate, the better t
carry out the Monroe Doctrine. That th
negative have hovn that it would-.be bad
political economy to meddle with Mexican
affairs at present. The next question f.jr
argument is in regard to Capital Punish
ment, but being Christmas, it is probable
the Lyceum will not meet on .Tuesday eve
. ning, but in imitation of the National ((511
gress will "adjourn over for the holidays."'
Ciiristmas Time. Refore another issue
of the Enterprise. Christmas will have
.passed. fs01d Cris Cringle has already be-
..gan his work informally in this communi
ty', by filling his depot, at the Lincoln lia-
' kery, and other established headquarters,
.replete with toys.preparatory to dispensing
his gifts. This is a good old-time custom.
-which annually springs up Phoenix-like in
the freshest youth, reminding older heads
. of what they have just buried. The ancient
.custom of erecting Christmas Trees, in
jarlor and church, will be carried out in
this city, on Monday evening, at various
places, ami churches will be decorated with
evergreens. We wish all our patrons a
Merry Christmas Holiday, and a continu
ance of the many " gifts"'"of the Bountiful
Hand which prospers them.
'6tovk Transfer. Mr. I). P. Thompson.
- of this city has has disposed of his interest
in the Woolen Factory, Ave understand at
a handsome premium. The operation in
cluded an amount of $13,500. Messrs.
Brown Bros, of Walla Walla, were the pur
chasers. The county can lose nothing by
the transaction, as Mr. Thompson is still
greatly identified with interests here, while
tlie transfer brings another to become in
like manner identified with our, increasing
prosperity.
Is it Right ? Young gentlemen and
'l.tdies of Mount Pleasant feel themselves
jj-ujured. because of a change in the pro
gramma for the Christmas festivals in tnat
neighborhood. They selected Christmas
evening, it appears, for a social reunion
among themselves, when the evening for
the Christmas Tree festival was changed,
t designedly 0to interfere. It is not our p-nSv-ince
to discuss such matter, but we very
jnueh question it as being right.
.Masonic Election. At the election of
-officers, A. F. and A. M., held at Masonic
Hall in this city on Saturday evening last,
-the following named gentlemen were elect-
d officers tor the ensuing Masonic year
J. E. Hurforvl, W. M.; J. R. Ralston, S. W.;
David Philglish. J. W.: Forbes Barclay.
Treasurer ; N. W. Randall. Tyler. The in
stallation will take place on the evening of

School District No. 11. We are pleased
to learn, from Mr. B. C. Lewis, that our es
teemed young friend Will. Kelly is meeting
with satisfactory success in his elTorts as a

numbers about thirty scholars, ranging
from the" ABC littlcones, to those much
larger and more advanced.

very appropriate. On Christmas evening,
we feel tfured .that all who attend the
opening party at the Cliff House will be
well repaid for it. Tickets S-l 00.

I promised in my last communication to
keep you and the .public posted on the
subject of the city fire department. Since
that date I am glad to say there is a fair
prospect of a water company being organ
ized. The draft3 and plans will be sub
mitted for approval at next meeting of
the city council, and I have no. doubt jll
be accepted. The sooner such a necessary
enterprise be perfected the better. Last
week we came near having a conflagration
followed by a fearful howling of " no
water," no engines," " no ladders' " no
nothing.1' and a little fault finding at-ihe
filling up of the cisterns. Pray whatan
be done with rotten cisterns and a broken
engine that can hold no water ? It is true

Dear Sir : As you are comparatively
a stranger in Oregon City and not acquaint
ed with the early history of the maps.
plats, &.c, of this enterprising place, I take
itie liberty ot correcting an error in an ar
ticle in the December 15th No., headed
" lil)ljImprovements."pJn that you say
you consul tedsthe orifuittv plat. Now if
you have seen that original plat, and can
inform the citizens ot Oregon Citv where
it can be found, you will coni'ea very
great favor. You infer also that all land
under the bluff is the private property of
Daniel Harvey. If such is the fact; then
it sfeuld be assessed to him. q
Yours, Arc, Citizen.
The plat which we consulted, and which
we understood to be the " original plat,"

Tiie Road to. Portland. We learn
from the Pdgtland papers that the McAd
amized iu good trim for riding and
driving, and that the ferry at Milwaukie
will be kept running the entire winter.
Oregon City is noay station in the win-
ter e hafe no rfSilds. and are cnse-
queniiy proof against any raids into our
streets of horses and carriages, oixvehieles
of any kind from Portland, nor can our
liverv stable owners make anv onsets
0(9)tipon the tranquility of Portland. Ain't
e y we a happy set here ten miles apart and
utterly unablo mae the connection ex
cept by steamboat, the entire winter. The
McAdamized road from Portend fS) Mil
waukie is one of the finest drives to be
found anywhere on the Pacific coast and
the expenditure of a few hundred dollars
vo(gxI extend it to Oregon City ; then we
might see the cheerful faces of ouiEmpo-
rium friends here daily -our hotelsvould
be stopping places for hundreds where
now only those who can't help themselves
stay with us. Our livery stables would
be worth something to their rCjoprietors,
and stock of whatever nature would come
up. What travel now gives us the slip,
and edibles the Boone ferry route to pay
handsome dividends, woM pass through
Oregon City. Who will Tell what it will
cost, to put the road through from the
White House to Oregon City, via Oswego?
If intended to have tlvj road built, give
us the facts and we will work them up.

CONSUMPTION!
An Interesting mLelter,
Very few persons, even among physicians,
would have been wilhg upon any terms to
have been in the condition of the writer of
the following letter on the 14th of February
lpst. I will anticipate somewhat his report
of the facts by saying that on the 15th of
August he made me a visit, " the very pic
ture of good health." Time, which trie
and proves all thingshas. sufficiently tested
this case, and shown that neither relapse nor
collapse have followed, the cure is perfect,
and can be cited amoncjthe stores of similar
case the result of my improved modu of
treating; diseases without medicine.

Bourne, who stated that a trip to the Islands
would probably result disastrously, was
wholly unnecessary, as I could be speedily
