having crossed the Plains in 1843. All
the lots in Oregon City, for several years
after Ins map was made, were sold with
most positive assurances from Dr. Mc
Laughlin that the plat of lots and streets,

and with the permission of his neighbors
on the front towards Main street. If there
was no Liuff street, of what use were the
alleys ami streets leading east from Main
street? I submit these suggestions for
what they are worth'

Lyceum. The question ' Shall the U.
S. extend an immediate protectorate over
the Mexican Republic' was ably argued
before the Lyceum of this citv n Tues
day evening last. The Chairman remark
ed, at the close of the debate, in substance
that the question had been so ably con
tested that it made it difficult for him to
decide, nevertheless, he held that the af
firmative had the best of the argument, in
showing that the I nited States have a right
to extend such a protectorate, the better t
carry out the Monroe Doctrine. That th
negative have hovn that it would-.be bad
political economy to meddle with Mexican
affairs at present. The next question f.jr
argument is in regard to Capital Punish
ment, but being Christmas, it is probable
the Lyceum will not meet on .Tuesday eve
. ning, but in imitation of the National ((511
gress will "adjourn over for the holidays."'
Ciiristmas Time. Refore another issue
of the Enterprise. Christmas will have

his gifts. This is a good old-time custom.

.custom of erecting Christmas Trees, in
jarlor and church, will be carried out in
this city, on Monday evening, at various
places, ami churches will be decorated with
evergreens. We wish all our patrons a
Merry Christmas Holiday, and a continu
ance of the many " gifts"'"of the Bountiful
Hand which prospers them.

- of this city has has disposed of his interest
in the Woolen Factory, Ave understand at
a handsome premium. The operation in
cluded an amount of $13,500. Messrs.
Brown Bros, of Walla Walla, were the pur
chasers. The county can lose nothing by
the transaction, as Mr. Thompson is still
greatly identified with interests here, while
tlie transfer brings another to become in
like manner identified with our, increasing
prosperity.
Is it Right ? Young gentlemen and
'l.tdies of Mount Pleasant feel themselves
jj-ujured. because of a change in the pro
gramma for the Christmas festivals in tnat
neighborhood. They selected Christmas
evening, it appears, for a social reunion
among themselves, when the evening for
the Christmas Tree festival was changed,
t designedly 0to interfere. It is not our p-nSv-ince
to discuss such matter, but we very
jnueh question it as being right.
.Masonic Election. At the election of
-officers, A. F. and A. M., held at Masonic
Hall in this city on Saturday evening last,

larger and more advanced.

city closed yesterday for vacation January
2d. The attendance has been larger than
ever heretofore there being about 183

I promised in my last communication to
keep you and the .public posted on the
subject of the city fire department. Since
that date I am glad to say there is a fair
prospect of a water company being organ
ized. The draft3 and plans will be sub
mitted for approval at next meeting of
the city council, and I have no. doubt jll
be accepted. The sooner such a necessary
enterprise be perfected the better. Last
week we came near having a conflagration
followed by a fearful howling of " no
water," no engines," " no ladders' " no
nothing.1' and a little fault finding at-ihe
filling up of the cisterns. Pray whatan
be done with rotten cisterns and a broken
engine that can hold no water ? It is true

will be kept running the entire winter.

rium friends here daily -our hotelsvould
be stopping places for hundreds where
now only those who can't help themselves
stay with us. Our livery stables would
be worth something to their rCjoprietors,
and stock of whatever nature would come
up. What travel now gives us the slip,
and edibles the Boone ferry route to pay
handsome dividends, woM pass through
Oregon City. Who will Tell what it will
cost, to put the road through from the
White House to Oregon City, via Oswego?
If intended to have tlvj road built, give
us the facts and we will work them up.
