Mr. Carnegie thinks the labor revolt

his long managerial career has Mr.
Cole presented so much that w new,

Europe and Ameriaa have contributed

a "Wild West" exhibition. Tho latter
is headed by thn illustrious wizard

of the Plains and one of tho most
prominpnt fijurMs in Western history.
Tht Wild West combination includes
many noted scout", cowboy?, Sioux

whom appear in thrilling scenes illus

Manager Cole is said to have thn best
equipped and most realistic Roman
hippodrome ever seen in this country.
The horses used in the races are of the
finest English and Kentucky stock, and
their contests for supremacey are pro

the great turf meetings of St. Louis,
Long Branch and Saratoga. That
Cole will be warmly welcomed, here
goes without saying.

A Musical Ircab
The "Yankee Doodle Band" from
Roseburg favored the music loving
people of our city, last week with a
musical concert and variety entertain-
ment which was highly appreciated by
the lovers of music and minstrelsy.
Theirerrcg'''lu.,lii'aiiitli9 Rftamoou
which was conducted with military ex
actness, awakened the enthusiasm, and
challenged the admiration of all who
gazed upon the ranks as they marched,
finely uniformed, through the princi
pal streets of the city, to thn tuna of a
superb quickstep; a beautiful compo
sition ami arrangement, which was
brilliantly played. Before marching
to the hall, they played ajfaw selec
tions at the junction of Front and
Main streets, after which the boys
were at rexf, so to speak, until evening.
A conspicuous figure which attract
ed much attention, as that of one of
our former Jaccki-onvillo boys, Fred.
M. Zigler. It was not alono the tall
commanding figure and military bear
ing that was particularly attractive,
but rather the masterly manner in
which be handled his instrument. In
the execution of some of his difficult
baritone solos, he was "great," consid
ering the fact that he has recently tak
en up the study of music, and more
recently that speciality.
Tliu open air concert in front of the
hall in the evening was a pleaeant sur
prise to those who were pleased with
their former efforts. It was simply
"Grand." A large audience greeted
their performance with well merited
expressions of aelight. One selection
in particular an overture was ren
dered in magnificent style; each part
being admirably sustained throughout.
One of our townsmen who heard tbe
celebrated "Alvin JosIin"ten thousand
dollar baud in Portland last winter,
declares that tho music played by the,
that piayed by the "Alvin Jotlin
professionals, although that celebrated
band is composed almost entirely of
solo players. With little strengthen
ing of some of the parts, and a careful
avoidance of some errors that amateur
players habitually fall into, the Y. D.
beys under the tutorship of Prof. Gil
lam, will have attained a decreo of
proficiency second to no band in the
State.
A variety entertainment was given
in the evening in the hall by the mem
bers of the band, to a good sized audi
ence, the major part of which enjoyed
the fun. The local hits were immense
and produced much merriment. Tbe
orchestra work inside the hall, was in
terfered with to a great degree, on ac
count of the steaming condition of the
atmosphere in the worst of ille ventil
ated halls. The violin strings were
continually breaking or "fraying out"
whieh rendered impossib'eany success
ful attempt to keep the instruments in
harmony. The opening overture, how
ever, taken from the Mikado,' was ex
ceedingly well rendered; that piece be
ing performed before the instruments
were seriously affected. Taking it al
together our people were immensely
pleased, aud the most sincere prais.'s
were bestowed particularly upon the
musical, ptr. of the programme. We
hope the boys from Iloseburg are sal
isfml with their excursion, aud we
rust that this, their first visit to our
part of the coast, will not be their last
ono.
An attempt was made on the 4th to
assassinate the Grand Vizier of Tur
key, by a crazy Tartar, who fired two
shots which missed the mark. He then
chased the Yizisr, who was riding in
his carriage at the time, with a sword.
He was arrested, and will, in due time
have his head cut off" in regular Tur
key fashion.
An Austrian engineer gives the fol
lowing method 'for restoring burnt tool
steel, which melt in a crucible three
parts by weigh of pure colophonium,
and, slowly stirring, add two parts by
weight of good boiled linseed oil. Par
ticular care must be taken in doing this,
because at a high temperature the mix
tare is easily ignited. Finally, a dark
brown mass of the consistency of syrup
is obtained, which, after a cooling, is
kept near the smith's fire, in a closed
pot for use. Any piece of steel, how
ever burnt, dipped red hot into the
liquid, isrestored to its original quality,
aud if the operation is repeated is even
improved. The steel is hardened best

constituting the fraud must be specific

party may. contest a right to such lands
prior to approval and certiScation; by
alleging and proving settlement prior to
such approval, and that the land is not
swamp and ovei flowed, but is fit for cul

All lands approved and certified

Resuscitation of the Drowned-
The moment the body is taken from
the water it should be stripped to tho
waist. Tbe clothing having been made)
into a roll to raise the pit of the stom
ach abovo the level of tho mouth, al!
fluid' shou d be forced out by pressure, v
just below tho shoulder bUdes, and tba
other on tba chest at a point directly
opposite. Having proceeded thus far,
with as little delay as posiible, turn
the body upon its bark, place the roll
of clothing under the small of tha
back, and practice artificial respiration:
as follows. Grasp the chest on either
side of the pit of the stomach, gradu
ally pressing forward and upward
until the whole strength is uxed, and
then suddenly letting go; continue to1
repeat this opperation with the regu
larity ot natural breathing. As thera
aro cases on record when ths respiraty
function has been re-established after
having teased for more than an hoar,
it is well not to be impatient of rulls;
any time within two hours your efforts
may be crowned with succes, without
there being any previous sign to lndi
cato it. Tho instructions are adopted
and published by the United States
Life Saving Service.
A living machine has been invoated
by a French aeronaut, and proven by a
trial trip'to be a success.- The aeronaut
dropped miniature bombs on some fort
ifications as he passed over them, to'
show what might be done in case of
war. This is Just what our war de
partment needs, and we recomeud that
they immediately purchase one for
Gen. Miles. It is just the thin-t: to
catch Geronimo. Hecanquietly swoop"
down on tbe old man in some cactus
thicket, drop a lasso about his neck
and hoist away. Tbe expence of hang
ing would also be saved, and Gn.
Miles could do the who e job himself,
there would be no dispute as to the
division of glorv. We aro indebted to
the French for many things besides
a Barranquilla consul and-a Bartholdi'
Statue of Liberty.
