John W. Hillman, for many years n
resident of Jaeksonvitle, in this state,
but now living not far from Baton
Rougp. in Louisiana, writes to the

Lake in the summer of 1S54, while on

"News" of August, 1870, and it was
copied into the '"Overland Monthly"
if the month following. Mr. Hill-
man is a brother of George W. Hill
man, for many years a Salesman in em
ploy of John Cran k Co. tof this city.

The great Lick telescope nearing
completion in 'he shop of Alvau Clark,
i he venerable and eminent telescope
maker of Cambridgeport, Masi. This
telescepe is to be placed in the obser
vatory on Ihe summit of Mount Ham
ilton. The lens of this instrument
have been under the hands of Mr.
Clark and his sous tint last Septem
ber. They were cast in Paris, and if
destroyed could not be duplicated with
in the next six months at any price.
They are valued at 825,000 each ami
when computed will be thirty-six
inches in diameter and will weigh
about 700 peunds. The instrument
when completed will be the largest re
fracting tlescoj in the world, and Iiy
its power the moon, 240,000 miles
from the 'earth, will be brought within'

There arrived in Porthnd tori the
Columbia on her lait trip two boys
named Gebhard. The younger was
only 6, and the older was less than 8
years old. They came from San Fran
cisco in the care of Cspt. Bolles. Their
story, and there is ho reason to disbe
lieve it, is that they canlfl frem Aus
tria to Saa Francisco in search of
their father-, who, they learned, was
in Chehalis, W. T. They met with
marked kindneks on their journey.
Upon arrival in Portland their "hats
were chalked" by the Nbrthern Pacific

A tree known as the rain-tree is
found in the drier parts of South
America. The tree grows to be the
height of sixty feet, and its leaves have
a very peculiar property of 'contlerising
the moisture from the atmosphere. So
copious is this condensation that aeon

branches, until the surrounJing soil is
converted into a vertible marsh.

Senator Jones, of Florida, ia mak

They have no objections to his making
love, but they think he is too slow in
inducing the lady.
Those who contemplate going East
had better buy their tickets while the
rates are low. Present indications
look to the formation of a pool by the
1st of April, though rates will never
again be as high as tbey were before
